(1227) Music & Me (April 21, 2016) Mr. Yasu is Intrigued with "Most Effective Method-Japanese Birth Control"

MR. YASU AND ROBERTO HAVING PHOTO SESSION
While Mr. Yasu's family are busy surfing the internet, Roberto asked for a photo session with him at the keyboard. Mr. Yasu is intrigue with Roberto's own 'joke' of combining some Japanese, Chinese and his own characters about the joke of "The Most Effective Method -- Japanese Birth Control."

MR. YASU IS INTRIGUE WITH "THE MOST
  EFFECTIVE METHOD -- JAPANESE BIRTH
                     CONTROL"

On March 24, 2016, our last customers at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort are Japanese family of 4, who arrive at about 10pm. Last order is 11:30 and the place will close at 12mn.
At first, they are not much listening to my rendition of Japanese songs. When I play “Let It Be” by the Beatles, the father is singing with me. He knows the lyrics and his diction is good. I played Japanese and American songs alternatively and they begun to appreciate my music.
I gave them my song book to look for songs that they like to request but they are not interested. The other members of the family (the mother and two young boys) are busy surfing the internet, which is offered free since a few months ago, if guests will order drinks of at least $10.00 worth.
After less than an hour of playing for them, the father gave me $10.00 tip. I asked him why they can speak English very well and he said they are living in the USA and comes to Palau and it's their last night in Palau and will leave early in the morning on their way to Japan. They are just biding their time before the flight. Later he asked me about the last page of the songbook where the word “Most Effective Method – Japanese Birth Control” is written with “Japanese” or “Chinese” characters which no Japanese, Chinese or Koreans can read. It’s because I just made it up.

   THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD --
    Japanese/Chinese Birth Control

Calling the attention of all Japanese or Chinese who found out the most effective method of birth control in the mid-70's.

After the end of World War II, the "Baby Boom" became the trend. Sixty years later, China's population topped the world.

Japan's population was somehow slowed by their citizens getting married at their late 30's or early 40's. And they don't want to have more than 3 children.

China and Japan found out the most effective method of birth control through the characters shown above.

THE ANSWER WILL BE REVEALED ON THE NEXT ISSUE OF MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 01, 2015 -- Palau's 21 years of Independence).

He asked me, “What is the answer to this? I cannot read those characters.”

I folded the paper in the middle lengthwise and folded it another time lengthwise again at the right side and the word “Sleep Alone” can be read downwards. He is amazed by the witty, tricky and innovative joke of that kind. I asked him if he would like to share it to his family. He refused and I told him some memorable experiences that I encountered especially with Japanese guests including “The Crying Lone Japanese in March 28, 2008.

A PIANO WITH A VIEW
Roberto Hernandez plays piano at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort from 6:00-9:00 pm every night except Friday (his day off). From 9:00-11:00 pm, he plays keyboard at Breeze Bar, about 30 meters from Waves Restaurant.

         MUSIC EXPERIENCE OF ROBERTO HERNANDEZ
                                          (THE CRYING OLD JAPANESE GUY)

BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2007, the Queen of Koror, Palau Bilung Gloria Salii, her husband Carlos and daughter Uroi had dinner at Waves Restaurant. They gave me $10.00 tip and a glass of red wine.

Before they go home, I talked to Bilung and said, “I would like to give you a Christmas present. I will tune your piano for free before the end of this year.”

I became very busy and haven’t done my promise.

On her birthday, January 05, 2008, they had dinner again at Waves Restaurant with 3 other guests. I played all their favorite songs. She gave me $10.00 tip, a glass of red wine and a slice of her birthday cake.

After three weeks, they had another dinner at Waves and after giving me $5.00 tip this time, I asked for her telephone number at home so that I can set the date of tuning their piano. She said 488-6216.

On March 19, 2008 (Wednesday), I saw her at the entrance of Surangel’s Department Store. I said I will call her on Tuesday (March 25) and will tune their piano on Wednesday (March 26) which I did. After tuning their piano for 2 hours, she is ready to issue me a check but I said I promise to tune it for free as Christmas present. She gave me bananas instead!

The next day, God gave me more that I expected.

While halfway on my piano playing at Waves Restaurant, a lone, old Japanese guy sits at a table about 7 meters from the piano. Ten minutes later, I started to play the Japanese song “Kawa No Nagareno Yo Ni”. In the middle of that song, I saw him get something from his front pocket- it’s a handkerchief! He is crying and was carried away by my expressive playing.

The two waitresses Maricar Baules and Maricel Carlos saw him crying and asked why. He pointed at me and I played with more expression. Goosebumps are all over my arms and body which I rarely feel when playing with much expression. I followed it up with another Japanese song “Subaru”. He cried more. The handkerchief is all wet!

When I played the song "Kou Jou No Tsuki", he pointed at the sky as the song is about moon. Tsuki is Japanese word for moon.

Fifteen minutes later, he gave me tip. I put it on the piano music stand. Edgar Cayanan, the Assistant Food & Beverage Manager said, “Kuya”, (Older brother) “I don’t think that’s the color of a $5.00 bill.” He checked the tip and said “It is a hundred dollar!” I just continue to play and ignore him as I don’t look at the amount of tip I get until the giver has left.

Edgar told about it to Maricar and Maricel. The two also checked the tip and said. “It’s really $100.00! Can we have some?”

When the generous man left, a Japanese couple sat at the same table where he sat. The guy requested 3 Japanese songs (Goodbye My Love, Itoshino Elly and the third one, I forgot). I was able to play all those 3 songs and he gave me $1.00 tip!

Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino, the biggest supporter of chess in Palau, and his wife Issa were having dinner at that time with an old Japanese lady guest. When he sat down at the piano to play a couple of songs, that’s the only time I look at the tip- it’s really $100.00. I said to the Ambassador, “Look, sir, a Japanese guy gave me $100.00 tip without requesting and another guy who requested 3 songs gave me $1.00”.

The next day, Friday, Edgar said that the man who gave me $100.00 tip last night said he made a mistake in giving me that amount. I said, “It is okay, I haven't spend it yet and when he comes back, I’ll give him back the $100.00 and it’s up to him to decide how much he really wants to give me.”

On Saturday evening, he comes back. While having dinner at the same table, I played all the other Japanese songs that I didn’t play on that Thursday night. When I play the 2 songs that made him cry, he didn’t cry anymore.

After his dinner, he comes to me with Cathy (Chinese waitress) by his side. He said, “Do you know the guy who plays piano in the cruise by the name of Norman?” I said, “No. Does he play Japanese songs also?” He said yes but only a few. Then he gave me tip again and I put it in my polo shirt pocket. And he left for Japan. Maricel saw that he gave me again and asked how much. I looked at it and it’s another $100.00!

He didn’t make a mistake. Edgar is just kidding me and maybe jealous.

I'VE GOT the "Most Effective Method -- Japanese Birth Control" idea when I am watching an electronic fair at The Plaza Restaurant where I worked for many years in late '70's and early '80's.

In the booth where they are selling typewriters, I tried the electric typewriter typing the Top 50 chess players of the world. I started with Robert James Fischer(2780), Anatoly Karpov (2700), Viktor Korchnoi (2670) Boris Spassky (2650), Tigran Petrosian (2640), Mikhail Tal (2635), Lev Polugaevsky (2630), Ljubomir Kavalek (2625), Henrique Mecking (2615), Efim Geller (2610), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2605), Vassily Smyslov (2600), Jan Smejkal (2600), Gennady Kuzmin (2600), Vlastimil Hort (2600), Ulf Andersson (2580)...

Then I heard somebody asking, "What number is Eugene Torre?" and I type No. 20 Eugene Torre. Although it's not yet that high, Torre reached that mark when he reached the Candidates Matches to determine the challenger to the world champion. 2580 was the highest that Eugene got, where very few have reached the 2600 mark.

Just next to that booth was the amazing and simple "Japanese" character that says "Most Effective Method -- Japanese Birth Control."

I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE ANSWER, THAT NO JAPANESE OR CHINESE CAN READ THOSE 'CHARACTERS'...

TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE IT, YOU MUST PRINT THE 'CHARACTERS' FIRST. THEN FOLD IT IN THE MIDDLE. FOLD IT AGAIN (1/4) AT RIGHT SIDE AND THEN YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT IF YOU WILL CONNECT THE 1/4 FOLDED 'CHARACTERS' TO THE FOLDED MIDDLE PART.

HERE IT IS!

(1115) MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 22, 2015) GENEROUS AND THOUGHTFUL PRR GUESTS

On Oct. 12, 2015, we have many guests at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort. Two of them are Japanese guys at the elevated center column at the right side of the piano. As they are talking, I haven’t played yet Japanese songs.
When I played one of the most popular Japanese songs “Nada Sou Sou”, they applauded and later, the shorter guy, left, gave the waitress Ivy Pura $20.00 to give to me. I said thank you to them and the next song that I played is “Kou Jou No Tsuki”, in which I sang it to the delight of other Japanese and Taiwanese guests.
F & B Manager Mervin Lee Cuyugan advised me not to sing again because Ma’am Michelle is at the wooden area. I still sing in lower tone and only to the part that I know the lyrics. Thirty minutes later, the other Japanese guy, right, requested “My Way”. I asked him, “Do you like the English version or the Japanese?” He said the Japanese version. I played it in Japanese version and sang it in low tone.
Ten minutes later, he gave me another $20.00. They have taken many photos including me as their background. I put the songbooks that distract the view of my face to the left side.
Before they go back to their rooms, I stop playing and gave them my card and we have a photo taken. When they go back 2 days later, they sit at the same table again. The guy who requested “My Way”, requested the same song again and gave me another $20.00. That night, they are going back to Japan. They said they will be back next year. AS USUAL, I FORGOT TO ASK THEIR NAMES.

On Sept. 22, 2015, I’m playing keyboard at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. There are many Japanese guests there who appreciate my singing of Japanese and American songs. When I played “Hotel California”, there’s a Japanese guy, about 3 meters from my left, who is singing it with me. He knows the lyrics although you can really tell he’s Japanese because of the accent.
At 11:00 pm, I stopped playing and gave the couple (guy) my card. He’s got $10.00 ready as tip and gave it to me after giving him my card. WE HAVE A PHOTO TAKEN AND AS USUAL, I FORGOT TO ASK THEIR NAMES.

On Dec. 16, 2013, Michiko Nakamura, left, gave me and my wife Christmas gifts (cards, postcards, photos and brown blazer, which I said to her that I will wear in Norway upon participation in the 2014 World Chess Olympiad (Aug. 01-14). Her and Katsutoshi ‘Kuma’ Nakada, right, have been to Palau 8 times. They are regularly sending me postcards from different countries that they have visited. She even sent me a Halloween card. In 2013, they gave me a dozen assorted chocolates and dough nuts from Japan. All of them are sweets so I gave to my wife because I’m diabetic.

One of the Taiwanese guys in this photo with Palau President Tommy Remengesau and First Lady Debbie, gave me $10.00 for accompanying a group of Taiwanese singers who sung 2 popular Palauan songs. Also included in this photo are Minister Baklai Temengil, the Palau National Olympic Committee General Secretary, Social Security Administrator Greg Ngirmang, where I tuned his piano many years ago, and the 2 top persons of Palau Royal Resort—Chairman Lin and President Liao.

(832) MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 02, 2014) THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT "WAVES"

ROBERTO, MICHIKO NAKAMURA, KATSUTOSHI NAKADA & THE LUCKY CHAIR
Michiko Nakamura, middle, and Katsutoshi Nakada, right, have been to Palau 8 times. The last time they were in Palau was in Dec. 16, 2013 where they have given Roberto many Christmas gifts and they have enjoyed the night when Michiko requested "Desperado" and Mr. Nakada - "Hotel California" where Jovy Rodriguez "assisted" me to the ad lib of it--TO THEIR DELIGHT AND ENJOYMENT!
The lucky chair at left is where the 2 young Japanese ladies put their $50.00 tip because of 'endless waving'.              (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT "WAVES"

A FEW weeks after I came back from representing Palau to the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, (Sept. 2012) there are 2 young Japanese girls (in their mid-20's) who passed by me while I'm playing mostly Japanese songs.

As they are going out of the main big glass entrance door, they began to wave at me and walking slowly.

At that time, the song that I'm playing is an easy song so I can wave to them with my left or right hand depending on which hand is not "busy".

They seemed to enjoy waving more and more and I wave more and more sometimes with both hands.

One hundred feet away and they seemed to be enjoying to wave more even though they are already in the "intersection" of Palau Royal Resort hallway going to the front desk.

I still wave to them even though it's only their hands I can see. To my surprise, they came back a few feet to wave some more before they disappear to my sight.

THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT WHERE I AM PLAYING PIANO FROM 7-9 PM IS "WAVES RESTAURANT"!

MAYBE THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT "WAVES".

The next day, they had dinner at Waves Restaurant. I recognized them easily because they are wearing the same clothes as last night.

The new General Manager (GM) Mr. Masayuki Kawaguchi of PRR is also having dinner at that time with his wife Midori.

I played mostly Japanese songs for the ladies.

Before paying their bill, the 2 approached me and put some tips on the lucky chair. One of them signaled that they have put tips on the chair because it looks like I'm not looking at it. She just pointed at the lucky chair.

Then we waive at each other again but not as much as last night.

After they are gone from my sight, I look at the tip and it's $50.00!

The PRR GM passed by and I showed him the $50.00 tip and he said, "Oh! They enjoyed your music very much that's why they gave you that much!"

MAYBE BECAUSE OF THE "WAVES" ALSO.

During the Opening Day of 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, I found out that there is a Waves Restaurant in Gold Coast, Australia.

After helping in setting the venue, Mr. Gary Bekker gave me AU$20.00 knowing that I don't have Australian dollars yet.

Together with (right to left) Jamie Kenmure, Bernard Saavedra, Chief Arbiter IA Charles Zworestine and Sam, we had lunch at a nearby restaurant.

After ordering our food, I noticed from the food menu that the name of that restaurant is Waves Restaurant.

I asked the Australian waitress to take a photo of us with me holding the menu that states "Waves Restaurant". I said to her that I'm working as musician in Palau and the name of the restaurant where I'm playing piano is also Waves Restaurant.

What a nice first day experience in Australia!

It's also the first time that I met Jamie Kenmure, who became Palau Rating Officer in 2010 and Palau Chess Team Captain in the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia; 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey and the just concluded 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway.

      COMPOSER OF PALAUAN SONG "NGESUAS"

On June 30, 2011 as I’m about to play piano music at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, a group of Palauan family are having dinner at a table in front of the piano. There’s also a BBQ for Japanese guests outside.

When I sit down to start playing, the Palauan father of the family asked me, “Is that a song book?” I said yes, and lend it to him and said, “Would you like to take a look?”  I gave him the dark blue notebook in which the cover is a photo of me and Palau President Johnson Toribiong taken on August 09, 2009.

I started to play Palauan songs and he knows almost all the Palauan songs that I’ve played. Sometimes he sings softly when he knows the lyrics.

When I played “Ngesuas”, he pointed at a teen-age girl and said to me that the composer of that song is her father. I lend her my green book where there are Palauan songs at the last few pages and she chooses a song.

The father told me personally that it’s his wife’s birthday today and asked me to play “Happy Birthday” right now. I suggested to him that to make a more dramatic approach, he should ask for a birthday candle, get 4 pieces of cake from buffet and ask some of the staff to sing for her.

I help in arranging that situation and when the all-lady employees sing the ‘Happy Birthday Song’, it has a big impact even to the other guests.

Executive Chef Horie is very busy with the Japanese BBQ and when he goes inside, sometimes he hears the father or me singing softly. He ordered Chris (supervisor) to tell me something: “Stop playing Palauan songs”.

When Chris told me that, I’m almost finish with the Palauan song I’m playing, and then the girl mentioned her requested song. After playing it, she gave me $5.00 tip. I still continue to play Palauan songs. Why should I stop when guests are enjoying it? It’s not only the Palauans that are enjoying it but also Taiwanese.

I think the father notice what Chris told me and while paying their bill, he wrote something on a piece of paper. Before leaving, he approached me and said, “You know a lot of Palauan songs. I know most of those. I own the SLC Club.” I gave him my business card also. Some of them ordered ala carte and some have buffet dinner.

After they left, Chris told me what the father had written on a piece of paper – THAT THE SERVICE IS BAD. THE FOOD ARRIVED LONG TIME BUT THE MUSIC IS VERY NICE!

On my 2nd day of working as musician at PRR (June 02, 2007), I’m playing the Japanese song “Sakeyo” with expression. I thought Chef Horie will “feel” it but I’m shocked with what he said—“Don’t play that kind of song here at PRR. It’s not suitable in this kind of place.”

I think what he means is that “Sakeyo” is an “Enka” song which means Japanese song where the theme is about the breaking up of lovers or their quarrels/disagreements.

A few months later, he asked for my Japanese songbook while having a drink at Breeze Bar. He made a list of more than half of my repertoire of Japanese songs and ordered me not to play those songs—AIJIN, AMENO BOJO, Chako no kaigan monogatari, COMO ESTA AKASAKA, DANSHING All NIGHT (Dancing All Night-correction), FUTARI DE OSAKEO, ITOSHI NO ERI (Itoshino Elly –correction), KANPAI, KAWA NO NAGARENO NI MIO MAKASE (he combined “Kawa No Nagareno Yo Ni” and “Tokino Nagareno Mio Makase”), KITA SAKABA, NAGISA NO BALCONY, ROPPONGI RARABAI, SAIGO NO IIWAKE, SAKE TO NAMIDA TO OTOKO TO ONNA, SAKEYO, SUKIYAKI, TUGUNAI (TSUGUNAI –correction), WAKATTE KUDASAI, WAKARENO ASA, WAKARETEMO SUKINAHITO.

When I complain why “Itoshino Elly” is included? It’s the most popular Japanese song. He said, “It’s an order!” I wonder who order it. I know it’s not GM Isao Takahashi’s order.

It’s like a cat and mouse game since then. When he’s around, I will not play those 20 songs. It’s good he’s not around when I played “Kawa No Nagareno Yo Ni” to a lone old Japanese guy in March 27, 2008. I made that guy cried because of my expressive playing and he gave me $100.00 tip twice!

Still in March 2008, Chef Horie asked me again of a list of all Enka songs I know. I asked him, “Then, I will not play it at Waves Restaurant?” He said, “No, our guests are asking for it for you to play on their function.”

Now he realize that it’s not what HE don’t like that I should not play but what the guests like to hear.

SINCE THEN, I can play whatever songs I’d like to play …. UNTIL… there is a change of General Manager.    Mr. Takahashi was assigned in Shanghai, China and was replaced by Mr. Masahiro Fujita, the former Rooms Director of PRR for 2 years. HE ORDERED CHEF HORIE, WHO ORDERED FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER EDWIN ACUYAN TO FORBID ME TO PLAY JAPANESE SONGS!!!

Two weeks ago, I arrived at 6:00 pm to play piano. Japanese couple came in at the same time with me. They sit farther away near window. I played Japanese songs for 30 minutes and the lady comes to me and gave me $10.00 tip and said, “Subarashi”, which I think means excellent or very good.

The next day, GM and Chef Horie is telling Edwin to make a letter on a piece of paper saying that I will not play Japanese songs again. And I have to sign it!  Edwin says, “It’s childish. How about Japanese songs derived from American songs?” When I checked my repertoire of Japanese songs, 13 of them are American songs that were adapted into Japanese.

I DIDN’T PLAY ANY JAPANESE SONGS WITHIN THIS WEEK. When I finish in making American lyrics to the other Japanese songs that I know, then I can play all of those songs and if they hear me playing those songs, I can say that it’s American adaptation of that song.

I AM AT MY BEST WHEN I CAN PLAY ANY MUSIC I WANT TO PLAY!

HE CAN'T PLAY PIANO WITHOUT MUSIC SCORE
The Japanese guy in this photo is impressed with the way Roberto Hernandez is playing piano without sight of music notes or score. He can only play when there's a music score in front of him. Hernandez uses scores only when he don't know the melody of a song.                                                (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

                  MUSIC CONTROL

ON JULY 24, 2012, a lot of firsts have happened to my music career:

While playing piano at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, a Taiwanese guy with his teen-age son asked me if I can let his son play ONE song for the newly-wed Taiwanese couple next to their table.

I let him play ONE song and the newly-wed couple came near the piano with the guy taking video of the boy. After ONE song, they requested him to play another one, this time it’s a classical piece. He’s good and plays with expression already at his young age.

In the middle of the 2nd song, Chef Masaki Horie came very close to me and firmly said, “Enough!”

After the 2nd song, back to ‘normal’ again but before playing my 3rd song, Chef Horie ordered me to sign a newly printed “PIANIST GUIDELINES” that said—DON’T PLAY TAIWANESE AND JAPANESE MUSIC     -- DON’T SING WITH THE SONG YOU PLAY   ---DON’T PLAY GUESTS REQUEST BECAUSE THEY’RE GOING TO SING ALONG WITH IT   ---DON’T LET GUESTS PLAY THE PIANO.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW YOU WILL BE GIVEN CORRESPONDING PUNISHMENT.

PREPARED BY: CHEF HORIE MASAKI (Signed) 7.24.12

                ACKNOWLEDGE BY: ROBERT HERNANDEZ

When I signed it, I asked him if I can have a copy so that I can show to guests who are requesting that GUIDELINES. Five minutes later, I’ve got a copy with his 2nd signature and date 7.24.12 that says “get signature from Robert”.

Another 5 minutes later, a young American lady showed me a list of her requested songs “Pick 2, your choice” –“Sound of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel;  “Unchained Melody” by Righteous Brothers; “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” by Bryan Adams and “With Or Without You” by U2.

This is the original handwritten request of that American lady.

Chef Horie is looking at us when I showed her the Guidelines. It’s the first test that I’m following it.

She said, “DON’T PLAY TAIWANESE AND JAPANESE SONGS –but my requests are American songs.”

I said, “I know all of your requests, not only 2 of my choice. I will play all of it but please don’t sing along with it.” I was able to play all her requests without Chef Horie’s knowledge.

After playing the 5th one, I followed it up with another Simon and Garfunkel song “Scarborough Fair/Canticle” and she comes again to me and said, “I like also the one you’re playing now. Can I give you tip?”

She thought giving tip to me is also prohibited. I said it is okay and she gave me $5.00 in new single dollar bills. And I played some more songs of Simon and Garfunkel.

Then our VIP and regular guests, Mr. Uehara and his family came a few minutes later. The last time that they’ve been at PRR was in March 22-25, 2012 where they gave me $10.00 on 3 occasions –March 22, 24 and 25. It’s my day off on the 23rd.

Chef Horie leads them to their table but he is not around when they requested Disney movies songs, Carpenters and Beatles songs. Mr. Uehara gave me $20.00 each this time on 3 consecutive nights.

He said they will be back again in Palau in January 2013. He asked me also what date I’m going to Istanbul for the 2012 World Chess Olympiad.

I mentioned to him in March 25, 2012 to please come again to Palau before August 27-September 10, 2012 because I’m not at PRR on that date till September 14, 2012.

The boy’s father approached me again before 9 pm. He wants his son to play another ONE. I said to him, “You said before, only ONE song. Because of that extra song, this GUIDELINE is issued just now.” And when he read the part “DON’T LET GUESTS PLAY THE PIANO”, he didn’t insist anymore.

When Tonet Medilo read the guidelines, she asked me some questions that either me can’t answer—Why is he trying to control your music? Is he jealous that you are making money from tips? But you’re not forcing them to give you tips. It’s from their heart because they enjoy your music. Isn’t he happy that guests are enjoying your music? Is he jealous also of your popularity? Do you ever get complaint because of playing so-so music?

Even with a small problem like this, I usually ask for God’s help to clear the minds of people who are giving me hard time because I’m doing my job. Maybe it’s HIS way so that I can adapt some popular Japanese and Taiwanese songs into gospel songs to praise HIM!   PRAISE THE LORD!   GLORY TO GOD!

This is the Taiwanse boy that plays ONE song for the newly wed Taiwanese couple (behind him). Chef Horie, with chef hat, is leaving the place. He comes back later when the boy played another one. With a firm voice, he said to Roberto,  "ENOUGH!"

Mr. Uehara, right, came with his family the night that Chef Horie is trying to take control of the kind of music he wants me to play. JEALOUSY? Maybe.

"FRIEND" and "BABE"
BECOME "CHEF"

Before the Farewell Party for Executive Chef Masaki Horie and David Chen, I heard a news from Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. about their leaving --THAT CHEF HORIE DOESN'T LIKE TO RENEW DAVID FOR ANOTHER 2 YEARS AND IN RETALIATION, MICHELLE LIAO DIDN'T RENEW CHEF HORIE FOR ANOTHER 2 YEARS.

It's from Jovelyn Rodriguez that I've got the right and true reasons of their leaving --DAVID WILL RENEW ONLY IF HE WILL BE GIVEN AN INCREASE IN SALARY. HE'S DOING NOTHING BUT STANDBY AT WAVES RESTAURANT WHERE HE SHOULD BE IN THE CHINESE KITCHEN.
CHEF HORIE DIDN'T "BITE" TO HIS DEMAND.

The reason why Chef Horie has resigned is because in Japan, if you're 40 years old already, it's very hard to get a big loan. Chef Horie is 39 and he still has one year in his contract when he resign to take advantage of that incentive so that he can start a business of his own.

Edwin Acuyan, the returning Food & Beverage Manager, adapted a song from Seals entitled "One Friend" and changed the appropriate lyrics (I becomes we because many will sing it, and Friend becomes Chef).

A day before the party, I've thought of an idea to change the lyrics of the song "Babe" by Styx to "Chef" because it's the only song that Chef Horie liked and he came to me and praise that song 4 years ago. I think he likes the song.

After the speeches and it's time for picture taking, Chef Horie come to me and said, "Thank you for the song. You still remember, hah?"

At that time, all my bad feelings about him disappeared and was able to ask for a photo with him for the first time. We have no photo together in all of my 6 years at Palau Royal Resort.
