(808) MUSIC AND ME (Aug. 14, 2014) EUGENE TORRE - THE SINGING GRANDMASTER

DEJA VU  --- ISTANBUL, TURKEY AND TROMSO, NORWAY
During the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, Roberto Hernandez of Palau, left, GM Eugene Torre of the Philippines, middle, and Mrs. Marylin Torre were side-by-side watching the show and awarding of prizes. It happens again in the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. This time, Roberto is all by himself as his teammates are busy packing their belongings for the early morning trip back to Manila. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

               GM EUGENE TORRE --
          THE SINGING GRANDMASTER
Roberto Hernandez attended the 2014 World Chess Olympiad Closing Ceremony alone because his 8 other teammates are busy in packing their things for the 4am flight--Tromso-Bodo; Bodo-Oslo; Oslo-Helsinki; Helsinki-Hong-Kong and Hong Kong to Manila. It's a 36-hour trip and for them, the Closing Ceremony is not that important.

But for Roberto, he's not letting go the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pass by. He also attended the FIDE Arbiters Seminar for 5 consecutive days hoping to pass the test/exam and be awarded FIDE Arbiter Title. Packing your things can be done in a few hours.

After getting off the bus, Roberto stand a few meters from the entrance. He saw GM Eugene Torre there standing by himself, waiting for his wife Marylin.

They have a long conversation about FIDE Senior Trainer Title that GM Torre got. Roberto got a FIDE Instructor Title after topping the FIDE Trainers' Seminar held in Palau by FIDE C. E. O Geoffrey Borg in April this year.

Their conversation was focused in music when Eugene asked, "So your job is just to play music?"

Eugene asked Roberto if he knows the lyrics of the song "As Time Goes By" from the movie "Casablanca" in 1942 and sung by Jimmy Durante. They sang it together without mistakes of the lyrics...
You must remember this, A kiss is still a kiss, A sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply, as time goes by. And when two lovers woo, they still say I Love You, on that you can rely, no matter what the future brings, as time goes by.
Moonlight and love songs, never out of date, hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate, woman needs man and man must have his mate, that no one can deny.
It's still the same old story, of fight for love and glory, a case of do or die, the world will always welcome lovers, as time goes by.
**Would you believe that I typed this lyrics without looking at my song book?

Eugene is now convinced that I know how to sing songs. He mentioned what Toti Abundo told me when Toti visited Palau in January 2014... that he and Toti used to sing in karaoke bars and their competition is whoever forgot the lyrics lose!

In January 23, 2014, Casto 'Toti' Abundo, Asian Chess Federation Deputy President, seated in the middle, sung some songs at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort without using the song books in front of him as he knows the lyrics of the songs that he requested to Roberto Hernandez, PRR resident musician. Playing blitz chess are FIDE C.E.O. FM Geoffrey Borg, left, and Palau top player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. Mr. Borg defeated all of his opponents including Toti in a show of his blitz chess prowess.

Eugene and Roberto sung also the Spanish song "Besame Mucho" ....Besame, besame mucho, como si fuera esta noche la ultima vez. Besame, besame mucho, que tengo miedo perderte, perderte despues.
Quiero tenerte muy cerca, mirarme entus ojos verter junto a mi. Piensa que talvez manana, yo estare muy lejos, muy lejos de ti.

Excellent singing and pronunciation of that song BUT...
WHEN EUGENE ASKED ROBERTO IF HE KNOWS IT IN ENGLISH, He was completely lost. He knows also the English version.

Another song that he knows better than Roberto is the song "Save The Last Dance For Me". He can play it instrumental without mistakes but had not yet memorized the lyrics.

They sit together near the stage. While there is some technical problem of the video/audio, they are having again the singing of song --this time "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel. People in front of them --Australia's women's team, can hear them singing it while in the screen, they are showing some highlights of the 2014 World Chess Olympiad including Roberto's teammate Destiny Sisior, the youngest participant in the women's section.

DESTINY SISIOR ON NORWAY'S NATIONAL TV, NEWSPAPERS AND WEBSITES

She is the youngest participant in the women’s section of 2014 World Chess Olympiad. The daughter of Palauan Harvey Sisior scored 2 wins and almost won her last game but couldn’t hang on to her advantage. Typical of a youngster, her time management still needs improvement. It’s written on the website …. “Destiny Sisior, 10 years old, from Palau. No words are needed…”

In singing "Just The Way You Are", Roberto sometimes mixed up the 2nd stanza to the 3rd stanza. Eugene knows exactly the right lyrics from 1st to 6th stanzas. In the Refrain of the song, they sung it correctly.

    1. Don't go changin' to try and please me, You never let me down before, umm, hmm. I don't imagine, you're too familiar and I don't see you anymore.
    2. I would not leave you in times o' trouble, we never
could have come this far, umm, hmm. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times, I'll take you just the way you are.
3.Don't go tryin' some new fashion, Don't change the color of your hair, umm, hmm. You always have my unspoken passion, although I might not seem to care.
   4. I don't want clever conversation, I never want to work that hard, umm, hmm. I just want someone that I can talk to, I want you just the way you are.
REFRAIN: I need to know that you will always be. The same old someone that I knew. Oh, what will it take till you believe in me, the way the I believe in you?
   5. I said I love you, and that's forever. And this I promise from the heart, umm, hmm. I couldn't love you any better, I love you just the way you are.    Alright!
    Ad lib: Sax
   6. (same as 4th stanza-pausing at the start of last 2 lines)
In some songs like this one, the g is cancelled in 'changin'. Also in tryin'. The song Fallin' by Teri deSario has cancelled all the g of the title from start to finish.
Some f are also cancelled like in o' trouble.
Want to becomes wanna, going to becomes gonna.
Never becomes ne'er to fit the rhythm. Prayer becomes pray'r to make it like one word.

During the singing of Turkish most popular singer in the closing ceremony of Istanbul Olympiad, Eugene and Marylin left because it's too loud for them. Roberto thought that they are not music lovers. When they come back, Eugene asked Roberto, "You can take that loud music?"
ROBERTO ANSWERED, "I'M USED TO IT. I'VE BEEN A BAND MEMBER BEFORE PLAYING LOUD MUSIC."

(807) MANUEL 8 PTS.; VARGAS, K. RAMOS LEAD B (TBN-March 28-April 04, 2003) Original Draft

                               MANUEL, 8 POINTS;
                                          VARGAS, K. RAMOS LEAD B

MENANDRO Manuel, now with 8 points and still undefeated, is moving closer to the championship of Class A of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament sponsored by TFCP, Image Restaurant and Sports Bar, and Budget Mart.

He beats Roy Rebollos and Noel Filomeno. Defending champion Consul General Julius Torres is just half point behind Manuel with 7.5 points after beating Jimmy Valenzuela and Rebollos. He drew with Edgardo Enarsao.

Roberto Hernandez (6 pts.) regained 3rd spot with a victory over Danny Dandoy in 40 moves of Pirc Defence. He won also by default over Jimboy de Jesus.

Bong Alipoon and idle Eddie Grefiel are tied at 4th with 5.5 points each. Top seed Cyril Montel, Jr. is 6th followed by Filomeno who won 3 out of 4 games. He beats Mariano Agustin, Jr., Valenzuela and Rebollos.

OTHER RESULTS OF CLASS A's 6th-9th ROUND:
Montel, Jr. d. Mike Miguel, Jr.; Default winners -- Dandoy d. Mario Ramos and Montel, Jr. d. Ramos.
Special game was held on Thursday, March 13 in which Rebollos defeated Ramos.

In Class B, Chito Vargas suffered his first loss and now shares the lead with 17-year-old Kris Ramos. Vargas' default win over Tutii Joe Chilton was replayed because Chilton thought he was eliminated from the tilt.

He didn't make it in Class A but not in Class B. With that Vargas' loss to Chilton, the race for the top 4 finishers in Class B becomes wide open.

Kris Ramos beats 14-year-old Arvie Leynes 3-1 in a best of 5 series. This was allowed to give young players more tournament games. Ramos now has 4 points.

OTHER RESULTS:
Vargas d. Ben Ramos while Norbert Villanueva drew with Allen Kangichi in a match that lasted 3 hours!
Winners by default were Dmitri Villanueva d. Remy Mingo; Chilton d. Vincent Vergara and Amante Caballero d. Nilo de Jesus.

CLASS A PAIRINGS WILL BE ANNOUNCED BEFORE THE GAME.

CLASS B 6th ROUND PAIRINGS (First name to play white):
Caballero vs. K. Ramos; N. de Jesus vs. Leynes; Vargas vs. Vergara; Kangichi vs. Mingo; B. Ramos vs. D. Villanueva and Chilton vs. N. Villanueva.

If you've logged on to www.fide.com you might notice that:  1. Gary Kasparov stays on top of the world's ranking for 12 consecutive years. 2. A lone woman Grandmaster is number 13 in the men's ranking. She is Judit Polgar, 26, champion of the world, Olympiad gold medalist, Oscar-award winner (Yes, there is Oscar in chess!) and holder of several Guinness records.  3. A 72-year old Grandmaster (Viktor Korchnoi) is no. 43 in the world. Despite his age, he's still competitive. A proof that in chess, age doesn't matter.

This week's featured opening is King's Gambit Accepted:
     1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Bc4 d5 4. Bd5 Qh4+ 5. Kf1 Bd6 6. Nf3 Qh5 7. d4 Ne7 8. Nc3 f6 9. Qe1 Nbc6 10. Ne2 g5 11. Bxc6 Nxc6 12. e5 fxe5 13. dxe5 Bb4 14. c3 Bc5 15. b4?? Qxf3! 16. gxf3 Bh3 mate. (Lokasto vs. Marcinkowski Poland, 1971).

Solution to last week's puzzle: 1. b3+ Nxb3 2. Rb4+ Bxb4 3. Nb6 mate. The 2 puzzles last week have the same technique of solving: block the escape squares of the king with his own pieces.

This week's puzzles: White to move and mates in 3

(806) MUSIC AND ME (Aug. 07, 2014) UNIQUE FATHER'S DAY 'GIFT' OF A THOUGHTFUL DAUGHTER

AT MANILA ZOO IN 1989
After coming back from 2 years and 3 months job as musician in Bahrain, Roberto Hernandez treated his 4-year-old daughter Karen to a trip at Manila Zoo with a giraffe as background. 25 years later, Karen found this photo as a unique Father's Day gift to his dad. HOW THOUGHTFUL!   (Photo by Roberto Hernandez -- Taken by Flor Hernandez)

           UNIQUE FATHER'S DAY 'GIFT'
        OF A THOUGHTFUL DAUGHTER

KAREN Gennibeth Miranda Hernandez is just 2 years old when her dad Roberto went to Bahrain as musician at Khayam Taverna (Greek Restaurant) from Jan. 1987-April 1989.

When Roberto comes back, he treated Karen to a trip to Manila Zoo. One of the memorable photo taken there is the one above.

When Roberto worked as musician also in Palau in Feb. 04, 1992, he forgot already the whereabouts of their old photos including this one.

When Karen graduated high school in Palau at Mindzenty, she resumed studies (Nursing) in Philippines from 2004-2008. During those years, she discovered some old photos from a very old wooden box.

Instead of scanning, she just took shot at those photos with a camera so the quality is not as good as of those scanned.

She thought of an idea to send that photo as Father's Day gift to his dad and he likes it a lot and said to her, "I thought that photo is long gone."

When Karen is just 2 years old, she's already very thoughtful.

Roberto is working at that time at Sinugba Restaurant as pianist from 12noon-1:30pm (1:30pm-2pm is lunch time). At night, it's 7-9:30pm (9:30-10pm is dinner time).

His salary for the day is given every night (130.00 Php). He always put the money in his long sleeves polo shirt pocket and go home by bike, which is just half kilometer away.

When Karen sensed that her dad is home, she will shout "Papa! Papa!" while Roberto is climbing the stairs.

Roberto will carry and kiss her and Karen's hand will go directly to the shirt pocket to get the money and give it to her mom! THAT'S HOW THOUGHTFUL SHE IS!

Karen also has a practical comment to those who believe in the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", a song written in 1940 and the theme song from "Pinocchio"....
