       I can teach the song "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" by Frankie Valli to a very few music students of mine like Samantha Tsao. We haven't practice it for a long time and last Sat. March 16, we practice it and she really has a retentive memory when she plays the long ad lib and chords played together. My next music student at that time, Jake Abellera likes the song also and I teach him with a very positive results. He added that there's a movie called "Jersey Boys" that tells the story of Frankie Valli.
         When my best guitar student Shane Abellera, Jake's oldest brother, came back to Palau from high school studies in USA in Dec. 2018, we played that song with him playing the guitar and Sam at the keyboard. It was a blast! Seeing my students perform the same song with different instruments is a fulfillment for me.

LUCKY TO HAVE SHANE ABELLERA-
          My Best Guitar Student!

When I teach guitar to Brandon Kyle Lagmay Soriano, I was recommended by the mother of one of my girl keyboard  students. I charge him the same as that girl -- $8.00/hour if it is twice a week.

Kyle's parents, Bruce and Violet Soriano, then recommended me to teach Shane Abellera and his cousin Samantha Tsao.

When I talk to her mom, Noel, about the day and time of their music lessons, she said, "You're a very busy man." It's because I told her my hectic schedule from Monday-Saturday with Japanese, Filipinos, Palauans, Taiwanese - including the Minister of Taiwan Embassy Joseph Ma.

We agreed on teaching Shane and Sam at Shane's house on Friday-- 2:30-3:30 for Sam and 3:30-4:30 to Shane and then I will proceed to teach Kyle guitar at 5-6pm.

On the next day, Saturday morning, one hour each again for Sam - 8-9am and Shane 9-10am.

I tried teaching Sam guitar on Fridays and keyboard on Sat. and it works well. Sam has learned guitar earlier so she's much better than Kyle.

When I teach Shane keyboard, the result is discouraging. He's really not for keyboard or piano. I also discovered that Shane is a Beatles fanatic. He's got a thick book with all Beatles songs and the years of those songs. I have many hand-written songs of the Beatles -- about 67, and some of those songs, I don't know the years that they were written.

One of the most interesting story I've learned from Shane is this epic story of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence".

      (This last 3 sessions, Shane is now interested to learn piano/keyboard also because of the wonderful melody of Tifa's Theme. He knows it will take years to be good at piano but he's giving it a try. He will resume his studies in the USA this July 2017. (FAREWELL TO MY BEST GUITAR STUDENT! I WILL SURELY MISS HIS TALENT AND KNOWLEDGE.)

       We started using capo a few months ago and it is really a great help in not adjusting the tuning of the guitar. He will bring that capo and will leave the Epiphone guitar.

        A good alternative for missing Shane's tutorials is that his Grandma (Mommy Keiko) will have Sam take 2-hour lessons for guitar (Fri. 3-5pm) and a separate 2-hour piano on Sat. 8-10am (Shane's slot).
       There is also a possibility that Shane's younger brother Cole will take music lessons where he is interested in drums. If that is so, I will teach him at the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale, where I taught Mika Tsuji drums lessons a few years ago.

GOSPEL MUSIC, WORDS OF GOD, BAPTISM AND CHESS

                    My roommate at PRR, Benny Billiones, 3rd from left, experienced 4 good things in his life in one day, Sept. 17, 2017. He heard Gospel music with me and the PMCC choir, was inspired by 30 years of serving God by Pastor Gallagher Concepcion, was baptized after the service and will be featured in Chess Mate by me for the first time while watching the 3rd round of 2017 PNCC Qualifying tilt. Others in this photo (L-R) are Bheng, Angie, Dennis, Angelo, Neph and Leif.
                                               (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

      ANGELO -- FIRST QUALIFIER;
           LEIF -- 4th ROUND BYE

The 3rd round of 2017 PNCC Qualifying had only one undefeated player, Angelo Salvadora, thus became the first qualifier by defeating previously unbeaten Dennis R Gonzales.

 Bobot Tan is still in the hunt for a slot when he drubbed Gonzalo Escapatoria;

 Neph Macasaet also won over Angie Sisior while Manuel Mahor is still in the run when he clobbered Wilson Barrameda and the shortest game of the day was between Baby Edna Mission vs. Leif Toribiong where the latter still has 1 hr. 2 min. in his clock when he was mated. Jennifer Angeles had a bye
. 4th ROUND PAIRINGS: (First name to play the white pieces) 1. Jojo vs. Dennis 2. Angelo vs. Jennifer 3. Wilson vs. Bobot 4. Angie vs. Bheng 5. Jun vs. Neph and Leif will have a BYE.

September 17, 2017 is the 12th Anniversary and Thanksgiving of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale and I invited my roommate Benny Billiones to attend the service from 9:00am-12:30pm. He was baptized and we had lunch there.

Before dropping him off to Palau Royal Resort, we dropped by at Bethlehem Park to set the chess sets and clocks for the 3rd round of 2017 Qualifying Tournament that features Angelo vs. Dennis; Bobot vs. Jojo; Neph vs. Angie; Jun vs. Wilson and Bheng vs. Leif.

After dropping Benny at PRR, I proceed to Tia Belau for my article on Sept. 18 and back again at Bethlehem Park. Minutes later, a car parked near us and there goes an American lady and her son.

 I've talked to an American lady, Jennifer Nehez, 2 weeks ago about her son who would like to join the junior division of 2017 PNCC. They didn't make it last week but they came at about 3pm on September 15 at Bethlehem Park (now known as Ernguul Park).

 I started teaching/playing Nicholas, 9 years old, with Jennifer watching. She said they are just 2 weeks here in Palau. When their 88 keys keyboard arrived from USA, I will teach Nicholas 1 hr. piano and 1 hr. chess in Airai. Jennifer also asked me if I teach Spanish language because she doesn’t like Nicholas to forget to speak Spanish. Although Philippines has been colonized by Spaniards for 100 years, only about 1% of Filipinos who speak Spanish, that’s being taught when I was in high school (1968-1972).

 I have to charge her extra for gas as I usually do to my students living outside Koror. Before leaving to go to another appointment, Jennifer, who works at US Embassy in Palau as Mission Deputy, and Nicholas gave me a rubber chess bracelet with CHECKMATE written at the center. THANK YOU, NICHOLAS! YOU'RE VERY THOUGHTFUL.

After the last game between Angelo and Dennis is finished, I proceed to teach Kyle Soriano guitar from 5:30-6:30pm. Before going back to PRR for dinner, I go to Adrian Abellera’s house to get the payment for his 10 raffle tickets to be drawn tonight at PMCC. Adrian is not home so I talked to Anna, his wife and GM of WCTC. She doesn’t have cash so she asked her son Jake to lend her $10.00.

After dinner at PRR, I proceed to PMCC for the Evangelistic Night by Pastor Gallagher Concepcion, our Guest Speaker from Hawaii, and raffle drawing. I filled up 10 extra tickets for Adrian because we don’t have time to look for those which I have given to him 3 weeks ago. I put his name—Adrian Abellera; Address –Koror; Tel. No. 488-8453.

When Emcee Sis. Jhoie Salvador announces the first prize winning number, she said, “The winner of $200.00 first prize is from Koror and his tel. no. is 488-8453 and he is Adrian…” I shouted to Sis. Jhoie that the family name is “Abellera”. I remember the tel. no. because I wrote it 10 times. I filled up 1 ticket for Nicholas Nehez for giving me a rubber chess bracelet which I always wear now.
When I informed Adrian about him winning the first prize, I told him that I have his ticket no. 1689 and I will go with him to redeem the cash prize whenever he is available. He said never mind and donated the $200.00 cash to the PMCC church!

My guitar/piano student Sam Tsao also won a towel as one of the 15 consolation prizes. I taught Jake piano for the first time on Sat. Sept. 23 and his younger brother Cole chess for the first time last Sat. Sept. 16 and 2nd time on Sept. 23 with Sam as his training partner. Cole might participate in the 2017 PNCC Junior Division.

Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3839: 1. Qxh7+!! Kxh7 2. Rh3+ Kg7 3. Be7#

This week’s puzzle No. 3840: White to play and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
