2014 PALAU NATIONAL CHESS

CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDING

ON JAN. 25, 2015

AFTER a very successful 2014-2015 Palau National Chess Championship concluded on Jan. 18, 2015, the Awarding Ceremony will be held on the scheduled final day (Jan. 25) at Bethlehem Park at 5:00-6:00pm.

Trophies, cash prizes and certificates of participation will be given to all participants with the top 3 finishers in 4 divisions receiving trophies, cash and certificates. Finger foods will be served courtesy of some sponsors and players. About 40-50 people are expected to attend.

The Top 10 Division winners are: National Master (NM), National Instructor (NI) Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. –Champion (Trophy and $175.00 cash); NM, FIDE Instructor (FI) Roberto Hernandez –1^st Runner-Up (Trophy and $125.00); NI Jeffrey Balbalosa—2^nd Runner-Up (Trophy and $100.00).

The Open Division top 3 finishers are: Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria –Champion (Trophy and $125.00); Felix Oling—1^st Runner-Up (Trophy and $100.00); Manuel Mahor, Jr. –2^nd Runner-Up (Trophy and $75.00).

The Women Division top 3 finishers are all members of Palau Chess Team to 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. They are Woman National Master (WNM), Developmental Instructor (DI) Angelica Parrado—Champion (Trophy and $125.00); DI Baby Edna ‘Bheng’ Mission—1^st Runner-Up (Trophy and $100.00); DI Gladys Anne Paloma—2^nd Runner-Up (Trophy and $75.00).

The surprising Junior Division is a see-saw contention of Sisior sisters (Destiny and Angelil) that the final results were not known until the final games on Jan. 18. After the smoke has been cleared, Angelil claimed her first junior chess title with a trophy and $100.00 cash. Destiny settled as 1^st Runner-Up (Trophy and $75.00 cash).

The surprise of the Junior Division is 8-year-old Ultei Angelie Surangel, who in her first participation in Palau National Chess Championship, finished 2^nd Runner-Up and will get her trophy and $50.00 cash prize.

The other revelation in the Junior Division is newcomer Robert Godwin Sola, who finished 4^th(11 points) and just a point behind Ultei. Cyrelle Ann Montel struggled and finished with 6 pts.

2003 OPEN -- CLASS A and CLASS B ROUND 1 RESULTS

Daewoo Corporation's 2 employees Eddie Grefiel and Freddie Dumlao played their 1st round games on Feb. 09, 2003 and both won their games.

The 2 Civil Engineers are working on the actual 1st round of Class A and B of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament, sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Margarita Borja Dalton --Owner/Manager of Image Restaurant and Sports Bar (the venue) and Budget Mart.

The first game on Feb. 16, fitted Cyril Montel, Jr. against the ever-improving Edgardo Enarsao, who prevailed over the former while Consul General Julius Torres upended again his co-employee at the Philippine Embassy in Palau Mariano Agustin, Jr.

Roberto Hernandez made short work of Roy Rebollos while Jimmy Valenzuela was upset by Danny Dandoy.

Menandro Manuel vs. Mario Ramos is draw and Valenzuela bounced back from an upset by Dandoy and defeated Rebollos in their 2nd game of the day. It's also the last game of the Class A Division.

In the Class B Division, Norbert Villanueva started fresh and clobbered Kris Ramos while 48-year-old Amante Caballero whipped 14-year-old Arvie Leynes.

The game of Ben Ramos and Allen Kangichi ended in a truce while Chito Vargas won by default over Vincent Vergara.

Tutii Joe Chilton also won by default over lone lady contestant Remy Mingo and in the last game of the day, Villanueva collected his 2nd win by outclassing Nilo de Jesus to lead the Class B in the early going.

NO NEED TO EXPLAIN OR PUT CAPTION TO THIS PHOTO...

The stingy defense of Eugene Labarda, left, costs Felix Oling, right, the title of 2014 Palau National Chess Championship Open Division Champion. Oling is ahead by 2 pieces in the middle game but somehow Labarda generated a counter play and was able to salvage a draw with the endgame of king vs. king and bishop. Oling is somehow overconfident and in a little bit in time trouble --- 8 minutes left to finish the game. The draw enabled Gonzalo 'Jojo' Escapatoria, Jr., middle, to clinch the title via tiebreak (Direct Encounter) as he defeated Oling in the 2nd round. Labarda lost by default in the 6th round because he didn't see that the venue was moved about 10 meters from the site because there is a Christmas party going on of The Filipino Community in Palau. He didn't look around when he comes thrice to check the players. He played in the last round of 2013 Palau National Chess Championship in that venue! He lost by default to Joey Jaime Balute, who didn't show up. But because he didn't report to the organizers, both of them lost by default ( - - ) double forfeit. Had he shown up to the organizers, he could have tied Oling and Escapatoria at 7.5 points each. In that case, Escapatoria would still be the champ because Labarda lost also to him. But he could have been the 3rd placer instead of Mahor.

: 3^rd PNCC TITLE FOR CYRIL TOMAS MONTEL, JR.

National Master Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., left, subdued Roberto Hernandez, right, in the final round of 2014 PNCC, and earned his 3^rd PNCC title. He previously won the 2009 and 2011 PNCC. A trophy and $175.00 cash prize is awaiting him at the awarding on Jan. 25 or Feb. 01, 2015.

(871) MUSIC AND ME (Dec. 11, 2014) THE MISSING CHORD OF THE SONG "SOMEWHERE IN TIME"

CHINESE LADY AND HER DAUGHTER BOTH CAN PLAY PIANO
This Chinese (or Taiwanese) lady ask me to let her daughter, left, play the piano. I let her play 2 songs and then she plays next some American songs including the 2nd or 3rd "Somewhere In Time" which reminds me of a middle-aged guy in 1984 in Philippines, who is looking for a pianist who can play the 'missing' chord of that song. THE MISSING CHORD OF THE SONG
"SOMEWHERE IN TIME"

THE MOST requested song to me among middle-aged ladies in the Philippines is the theme song from the same movie "Somewhere In Time" starring Christopher Reeves, the Superman lead actor.

Because it has a very complicated chords, I have to buy the score sheet of that song at National Bookstore worth about 18.oo Php. I followed meticulously all of its chords -- from Major 7th, minor 7th, minor augmented Major 7th, Major, minor, 7th, and many chords with different bass.

When one of my piano students in Philippines got married, she requested me to play in the church and reception of the wedding. She requested me to play "Somewhere In Time", Looking Through The Eyes Of Love, Endless Love and the 4th one, I can't recall.

I have noticed since then that Somewhere In Time is really popular among ladies but I haven't seen the movie yet and always ask myself, "Why did they like this song and the movie?"

When I worked in Bahrain for 2 years and 3 months at Khayam Taverna (Greek Restaurant) in 1987-1989, I was able to see the movie 'Somewhere in Time' when I rented that film in VHS cassette. THEN I FOUND OUT WHY!

I remember when I'm playing that song in 1984 at the terrace of Aristocrat Restaurant in Greenbelt, Makati, some people surrounded me and watching me playing it with expression.

There's a middle-aged guy who waited for me to play the refrain of the song and specifically looked at my left hand to see what chord I will play at the part where he can't figure out what key is that when he is playing it-- it's key of B!
He said, "So, it's B key that I can't figure out myself."

NOW IT'S MY TURN TO SEE IF THE LADY IN THE PHOTO WILL PLAY THAT CHORD AND FIND OUT IF SHE IS ALSO METICULOUS ABOUT PLAYING CHORDS.

SHE'S NOT!

The Beginning of Chess in Palau

(870) ROBERTO HERNANDEZ -- Palau First FIDE Instructor (FI)

FIDE C. E. O. Mr. Geoffrey Borg visited Palau together with Casto 'Toti' Abundo in January 2014 to promote chess in schools and hold FIDE Trainers' Seminar in Palau in April 2014.

It was a very fruitful visit that started a bright future and vision of Palau chess moving forward and be known internationally.

In his 2nd visit, Mr. Borg hold a FIDE Trainers' Seminar that produced an FI (FIDE Instructor), 6 NI (National Instructor) and 7 DI (Developmental Instructor).

During the Seminar, Roberto prefers to sit in front of Mr. Borg as he always do whether in church, meetings and even at the FIDE Arbiters' Seminar that coincide with the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway, where he didn't get a front seat because he joined in its 3rd day.

During the written exam, the taking notes while Mr. Borg is speaking, helps Roberto to top the exam. There is a time in high school that Roberto is always taking note while the teacher is talking. If the teacher don't allow taking notes while he/she is speaking, Roberto will still take notes with his eyes at the teacher while his hands are writing on scratch paper. He will transfer it later in the night to his notebook. That's why during tests, he can answer what his other schoolmates can't because some test questions are not mention in the book but mentioned by teachers during their lectures.

After the exam, there is a group photo session for all participants who will be getting their respective I. D.s as FI, NI, or DI.
