MY 2 LATEST CHESS/PIANO STUDENTS –Sean and Seandy Sola
I’ve spent 9 hours of fun and exciting chess/piano lessons with my latest students Sean Sola, left, and his younger brother Seandy Sola, who is a 3rd grader at Koror Elementary School while Sean is 6th grader in the same school. Their mother Lorie also took a 1 hour music lesson from me in the 2nd session. The father, Andy is the uncle of Robert Sola, an inactive junior rated player of Palau Chess Federation. I’ve seen potential in chess with Seandy and in music with Sean. Good luck to the addition of my “Chess and Music (Perfect Combination) The Beginning of Chess in Palau”.

1st SURANGEL TEAM TOURNAMENT
2018 ON AUG. 5
ALL DOUBTS and misunderstanding were cleared after a long chat on Messenger by me, Palau Chess Federation President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps and Jamie Kenmure. The first misunderstanding took place when I left the PCF Board Meeting an hour earlier because of work from 7-11 pm at PRR.
I asked Angie Parrado to list down the last part of the meeting and leave her my pen. When I get the note the next day, the verbal explanation of Angie is incorrect as explained in the chat. I thought that a Palauan must be included in each of the 7 teams as reserve. They must not be listed in the FIDE list and must have no ratings yet. The first Palauan guy that comes to my mind is Morton Sawaichi, who doesn’t have FIDE ratings yet and not listed in the FIDE rating list.
In the conversation, Eric said that we don’t have to wait for him from vacation as he said before that he will make a different group composition. The original composition of the 7 teams are Team Cyril –Jeff Balbalosa, Jennifer and Aome Angeles; Team Roberto—Glen Navarroza, Angelil Sisior and him; Team Tito—Jojo Escapatoria, Jr., Destiny and Kyarii Sisior; Team Dennis—Wilson Barrameda, Joan Gemota and Rommel Gulla; Team Rustum—Jun Mahor, Angelica Magno, Michael Gulla; Team Angelo—Paquito Suringa, Jr., Angie Parrado, Ksau Anthony Whipps; Team Bobot—Leif Toribiong, Bheng, and Gian Gabriel Claronino.
I suggested that Jeff be with Dennis Team as Wilson has left Palau for good. Gabriell Garcia, who’s back from vacation, will fill in Jeff’s place to give more balance to the teams. In the chat, Eric reiterated that there must be one Palauan (new) player in each team to play at Board 5 for Surangel to sponsor the event. In that case, I asked Jennifer to convince at least 5 or 6 standouts in the PMA Chess in School’s 1st and 2nd Batch like Reece Reklai, Lancy Lazarus, Carlos Manuel, Blossom Richard, Yumi Sadao, Kazumi Chibana, J-Lyn Singeo and Secheriang Senior to name a few.
Ksau Anthony Whipps could be the 2nd Palauan in the list and Gian Paloma might replace his spot in Team Angelo. Reece Reklai, who following the chat, is an excellent prospect for 4th Palauan player. (Reece is not qualified as it says there--never played a tournament in Palau).
This is the first time ever that Palau will hold a team tournament. With great support and sponsorship, this will be a huge success and breakthrough for chess in Palau. Eric, Ksau and Joy will be available if the team tournament will be held on July 15 but Jennifer and Aome will have a vacation on June 29 and Angie and her family will be back from vacation on July 31 so the perfect date is Aug. 05, 12, 19, 26 and Sept. 2, and 9. Most of the Olympiad bound players are going on Sept. 21 as the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia will be on the eve of Sept. 23.
This tournament will be non-rated (the correct term as “non-rated” is an event while “unrated” or UR is a player) as approved in the Board Meeting. Only the National Chess Championship will be rated and the others (Lightning, Blitz and Rapid) will be non-FIDE rated to save cost on tournament registration fees to FIDE.
In the 1990 Ermita-Malate Open Chess Tournament in Philippines, these are the categories of players—Top Unrated Players (where I finished tied from 4th-8th), Top Lady Players, Top Kiddies Under 13, Top Juniors Under 20, Top Seniors Under 40, Top 1800 and below, Top 1900 and below, Top 2000 below, Top 2100 below, Top 2200 below, Top 15 Veterans Players (40-50 Years Old), Top Oldies (50 Years Old and Above, the 2nd placer Daniel Jossi is listed as UR and the champ Charlie Mayo has 2042).
149 of Philippines’ top chess players participated in that event except GM Eugene Torre, which took place in March 19-27, 1990. Only 9 players are UNRATED including me.
