(1140) MUSIC AND ME (Dec. 03, 2015) SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN MARRIES FIANCE
WEDDING AFTER ONE YEAR AND 10 DAYS SINCE PROPOSING
Palau Royal Resort Sous Chef David Chen, 2nd from right, finally marries his fiance after proposing on Oct. 20, 2014 at the beach of Palau Royal Resort that was initiated by DOB Michelle Liao, 3rd from right. Exactly one year and 10 days (Oct. 30, 2015), they got married and the reception was held at the newly-renovated Ming's Court of Palau Royal Resort where Roberto Hernandez, the resident musician, played piano music during the reception. He played music also during the proposal.

SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN
MARRIES FIANCE
INSTEAD of playing piano music at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, Roberto Hernandez, PRR resident Musician, was invited again by Sous Chef David Chen to play music during the reception of his wedding with 375-day fiance at the newly renovated Ming's Court of PRR.
The following is the story of the proposal:
SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN PROPOSES
TO GIRLFRIEND AT BREEZE BAR
On October 20, 2014, Junior Sous Chef David Chen asked me to play love songs at Breeze Bar during his proposal to his girlfriend on a Friday evening (Oct. 24) at 9pm.
I said, "It's my day off every Friday but if it's 9pm, I can make it after attending the prayer meeting at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale)."
David is very appreciative about it. It's also the first time that he requested to me something about music.
Somebody suggested that someone should sing a love song while he is proposing. The suggested song is "Unforgettable" by Nat 'King' Cole which was 'remade' and 'revived' with his daughter Nathalie 'singing' it with him like he's still alive. That's what technology can do. The arrangement of the song is so beautiful and complicated that I have to look at the chords to play it without mistakes.
The name Gerry Medrano, Cafeteria's new cook, came to somebody's mind. We don't have time to practice that song. I just lend him the songbook where he will choose also some other songs from that.
Gerry Medrano, 2nd from left, poses with Paquito Suringa, Jr., who is absent in the Awarding Ceremony of the 2014 Palau National Chess Championship. He is holding the 1st runner-up trophy of Roberto Hernandez. At left is John Fernan Velarde, who participated in the only chess tournament that he joined -- the 2012 PNCC. He left Palau for good on May 29, 2015. New worker JR shows the certificate of participation of Roberto. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)
At 8pm, I attended the Friday Prayer Meeting at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale). 10 minutes before 9, I left to fulfill my promise to play in the surprise proposal of David to his girlfriend.
At 9pm, I am already setting the keyboard at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. Gerry came 5 minutes late.
He sung first the "Unforgettable" which I set the key 2 steps lower. I don't have an idea of what pitch Gerry has. He's singing it off key so I change it to the original key and everything sounds good from there.
I don't like his choice of the next song -- "Twilight Time" by the Platters. Only the title but the lyrics are good...
Heavenly shades of night are falling, it's twilight time,
Out of the mist your voice is calling, it's twilight time,
When purple-colored curtains mark the end of day,
I hear you, my dear, at twilight time.
Deepening shadows gather splendor as day is gone,
Fingers of night will soon surrender the setting sun,
I count the moments, darling, till you're here with me,
Together, at last at twilight time.
Here in the afterglow of day
We keep our rendezvous beneath the blue
Here in the sweet and same old way
I fall in love again as I did then.
Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me like days of old,
Lighting the spark of love that fills me with dreams untold
Each day I pray for evening just to be with you,
Together, at last at twilight time.
When Gerry is singing "Put Your Head On My Shoulder", that's the time that David proposes. He's wearing complete chef uniform.
When David proposes at the beach, there is a big heart-shape of candles at the beach.
The other guests, mostly Taiwanese, are surprised as did David's girlfriend. She's in tears. Many guests have watched them during the short proposal time.
The design of the surprise heart-shaped candles at the beach was meticulously done by Palau Royal Resort DOB Michelle Liao.
Before going back to Dormitory 1, I had the above photo taken with David and his girlfriend.

Prior to playing piano at the reception, I instructed Food and Beverage Manager Mervin Lee Cuyugan not to dragged the piano at Ming's Court wooden floor so that there will be no scratches.
They set up the piano at the right side corner. I can see the guests and the couple through the shiny piano cover and took a selfie photo through that shiny piano cover part...
While playing, I notice that most of the guests are Chinese/Taiwanese so I played the first hour playing all Taiwanese/Chinese songs.
I've got an American song request --"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and later "Hotel California".
The one who requested the first song gave me a glass of red wine and later $10.00 tip. (Ryan Lee)
Before going home, he introduced me to the new Ambassador of Taiwan to Palau Harry Tseng, who replaced the generous Ambassador Maggie Tien.
Ambassador Harry Tseng said he was impressed with my piano playing. I gave him and the guy that gave me $10.00 and red wine my card. They also gave me their cards and at that time that I realized he is the new Ambassador. The generous guy is the Palau Branch Manager of China Airlines Ryan Lee. His wife also gave me $10.00 with Ryan giving me another glass of red wine.
While they are leaving, I happened to get a photo of them.

(1138) MUSIC AND ME (Nov. 26, 2015) ANDY UERBELAU and the "HARBOR LIGHTS"
ANDY UERBELAU LIKES THE PLATTERS' SONG "HARBOR LIGHTS"
Andres 'Andy' Uerbelau, right, likes oldies but goodies songs. It's a first time when I was requested to play "Harbor Lights" in key of Eb (Eb). When I sang it, I realized that the lyrics of that song is not the usual theme that a man working on a ship (military or commercial) found a girlfriend when on the shore. It's the lady in this song that on a ship.

ANDY UERBELAU and the
'HARBOR LIGHTS'
ON Nov. 26, 2015, a Palauan guest is waiting for me to
play piano at 7pm. I remember him came more than a month ago and he requested a
song which I can’t remember at that time. When he passes to me to go to the
Coral Bar of Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, I asked him, “Would you
like to request a song or two?” He answered back, “I hope you remember what I
have requested you.”
That
makes me think for a while. I have played 5 more songs before I realized that
he requested an unfamiliar song to me because it is in key of E flat (Eb) and I
know only 3 songs that I play in that key. That song is “Harbor Lights” by The
Platters. When I played it instrumental, I guess that he will like it more if I
will also sing it. I’m not mistaken!
After
the song, he asks a waiter to give me Asahi beer. When he comes to me, he said,
“I’m very happy that you remember my favorite song.” I answered back with a
little exaggeration, “It’s because it’s one of the only 4 songs that I play in
key of Eb.” Actually, it’s only 3 as I have written in one of my posts. It will
become 4 now with the addition of “Harbor Lights” when I update it.
He
said also that when he visited Philippines, he always goes to bars and asks the
musicians to play that song and some other oldies but goodies songs. Before he
left, I ask for a photo and his name. He said “Andres” but I can call him Andy.
And that his family name is Uerbelau and he has a brother, which I know as
Victor, who also writes at Tia Belau Newspaper once in a while.
On
Dec. 17, 2015, Andy is back at Waves Restaurant all by himself again. After I
played and sang “Harbor Lights”, a waiter asked me what do I’d like to drink. I
should have said “Red Wine” should I saw it earlier that he’s having red wine.
I said Asahi again.
After
going to the rest room for a 5-minute break, I saw 2 requested songs written by
Andy at the piano –Love Letters in The Sand and An Affair to Remember. NOW I
KNOW WHAT HE LIKES!
From
then on, I played all oldies but goodies songs –Mona Lisa, Too Young, Only You,
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Ebb Tide, Somewhere My Love, Moon River, Strangers in
the Night, Fascination, Something Stupid, Yesterday and more…
At
9pm, before going to Breeze Bar to play for another 2 hours of keyboard music,
I talk to Andy for a few minutes. He will come again to listen to me play those
oldies. He mentioned again about his trips to Philippines and enjoyed those
kinds of music played live by a variety of musicians. He saw some senior
musicians still loving to play piano and keep doing it for the love of music.
He
also said that he can’t find any place in Palau that have a musician like me
that can play old songs in his generation. I mentioned to him that I once got a
letter from a Japanese lady that is written in Japanese downwards that I have
to ask our GM Isao Takahashi to translate it to me. It says there that when I’m
playing those old American songs, she reminisce the time when she was young
enjoying those music. And that it looks like she’s young again because of that.
She also included $30.00 tip inside the envelope and left it at the front desk
of PRR upon checking out in 2009.
I
also mentioned to Andy that Chief Justice Arthur Ngiraklsong also enjoyed my
music at Breeze Bar and that he likes Greek songs also because of the movie
Zorba, the Greek. He said CJ is a colleague and also his brother Victor. Andy
is also a lawyer.
