(1552) MUSIC AND ME -322 (June 28, 2018) A GROUP OF JAPANESE ENJOYED MY MUSIC FOR 2 NIGHTS

A GROUP OF JAPANESE ENJOYED MY MUSIC FOR 2 NIGHTS

On June 04, 2018, there is a group of Japanese musicians that requested a lot of songs to me. One is a drummer, the other one is singer, no keyboard player but with bass guitar player, who gave me $10.00 tip. They enjoyed that night with singing and requesting songs including "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire; Songs of Billy Joel, Japanese song "Tsunami", etc.

The next night, they all sit at the very far end of Breeze Bar but I still played their requested songs but instrumental only. Unlike in their first night, I always sing their requested songs.

I am surprised that they are leaving so early. But they have Japanese friends near the swimming pool and they go back and sit at the table very close to me.

At first, they are just talking so I played songs that I wanted to play without expression.

Then comes the older Japanese guy with hat (the guy at the left of the first photo.)

He started singing with some unfamiliar song among Japanese like "Days of Wine and Roses".
He gave me $10.00 tips and that's the start of their singing. I gave them my songbooks (American and Japanese) for them to look and more Japanese joined their group including the middle aged Japanese lady who always dance when the song that they are singing has fast tempo. She danced when I sing/play the Hawaiian medley of Baby Blue, Pearly Shells, Blue Hawaii and Tiny Bubbles.

She later gave me another $10.00 tip. She is the lady 2nd from left in the first photo

I took a selfie with the guy (with hat) and another guy that gave me another $10.00 tip (right). He cannot speak much English and requesting Japanese songs by just humming the melody.

I can't let go not to take photo of the dancing and generous lady (right), with the group of musicians except the other younger lady.

The next day, June 06, they are back at the same table. The generous and dancing lady came late and no tip from her this time. I saw the guy in the middle at Waves Restaurant when I playing instrumental music there, borrowing umbrella from the Palau Royal Resort staff because it's raining hard. When I come there, the rain stopped.

They enjoyed more singing but no dancing this time. The guy at right is drunk already since borrowing umbrella at Waves Restaurant.

The guy with hat sang another unfamiliar song to Japanese "All of Me".

Before I stopped playing at 11 pm, he asked the 'umbrella' guy if he gave me tip (chipu) already. He said "kinoo" (yesterday). The guy with hat specify "kyo" (today?). When he didn't answer, the guy with hat gave me $20.00 tip.

(1540) MUSIC AND ME (May 17, 2018) INSTALLMENT TIPS

I have never had an experience of having tips by installment! The Japanese guy here gave me a total of $5.00 tips for requesting 3 American songs at the Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort on April 30, 2018.

         TIPS BY INSTALLMENT

I've got a $10.00 tip at Waves Restaurant on the night of April 30, 2018. Then I proceed at Breeze Bar to play another 2 hours of keyboard music.

Two young Japanese ladies came and sit near the keyboard. Later they were joined by their father? and I started to play Japanese songs starting with Yume No Tochu.

THEN THE INSTALLMENT TIPS BEGUN...

The father gave me $3.00 tip to play "Yesterday" by the Beatles. I sang the song as I know it by heart and it's the most recorded songs in the world. Being recorded by different artists/singers around the world by about 2,000 versions!

His next request is "Let it Be", another Beatles song. I sang it as well. He gave me a dollar this time. Then "Imagine" by John Lennon follows without tip. Imagine is very popular among Japanese even though it is sung by John Lennon when the Beatles broke up.

The two ladies sang with me to the songs by Southern All Stars "Tsunami" and "Itoshino Elly".

Then he requested again "Hotel California" by Eagles. I sang it as well with the key lowered by 3 steps to fit my range/key.
He gave me another dollar.

The last song of the ladies is "Nada Sou Sou", a very popular Japanese songs among middle aged generation.

Benny Billones wants to be in the photo also with the Japanese ladies so the last shot was a selfie.

(1472) MUSIC AND ME (Nov. 09, 2017) SAMANTHA TSAO--WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO? -Guitar, Piano, Chess, Vocalizing and now Ukulele

USING UKULELE AS VIOLIN
I've been teaching Samantha Tsao guitar, piano, chess, vocalizing and now ukulele since 2015. This photo was taken in March 11, 2016 where she pretends to play a violin using a ukulele and my pointing stick. I never thought that ukulele will be added to the list of musical instruments that I can play and teach. IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO LEARN NEW THINGS...

                   SAMANTHA TSAO --
              WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?
          Guitar, Piano, Chess, Vocalizing,
                      and now Ukulele

In December 2016, I was about to write Noel Tsao, the mother of my guitar, piano, chess and now ukulele student Samantha Tsao, this...
"Dear Noel, Sam never ceases to amaze me every time I teach her. Although she is not focus most of the time, the talent in her is oozing in every category.
My latest discovery of her talent is about harmonizing with Christmas songs. It will take time for ordinary kid or even adults to sing the 2nd voice of a song or harmonize for short.
When we are singing a Christmas song, I sang the 2nd voice and she sang the main or first voice. Then I try to push her if she can sing 2nd voice. AND SHE DID!
Very few kids/adults can do voicing or harmonizing up to 3rd voice. I can sing 3rd voice if I can hear the 1st and 2nd voice of a song. This time, because Sam can sing the 2nd voice, I was able to sing the 3rd voice of that Christmas song.
I was amazed by the talent in Sam. What else can she do?
IF I AM LUCKY TO HAVE SHANE ABELLERA AS MY BEST GUITAR STUDENT, I AM MORE LUCKY TO HAVE SAM AS MY MOST MULTI-TALENTED STUDENT!"

Unfortunately, I was not able to write this letter and still I continue to discover more talents in Sam.
She is the only music student of mine that I can teach songs that I never thought would be learned by a young student like Sam. She can play "Hopelessly Devoted To You, Open Arms, La Isla Bonita, Joy To The World by Three Dog Night, Hawaiian Medly of Baby Blue, Pearly Shells, Blue Hawaii and Tiny Bubbles; Swing Medley of Around The World, All of Me, More, Paper Roses and Hello Dolly.
Lately this month, Black is Black, Hotel California in Bm (in guitar, I'm teaching her in Am for easier strumming),

When I started to teach Cole Abellera chess, I always have Sam as his training partner. Sam has talent also in chess! I used to test their skills by solving chess puzzles (mate in 3 moves). They are equal with solving chess puzzles. Sometimes Cole is better, the next time it's Sam. I tried to convince them to try joining the regular chess tournaments of Palau Chess Federation whether in Standard, Rapid or Blitz time control but they are still shy and don't like to explore/play with other players (young and old, men or women or juniors) with varying chess skills.

I started to teach Arthur Surangel ukulele in Jan. 13, 2018. He's got a new ukulele with a manual that indicates that tune of the 4 strings of it -- G C E A and the chords C, C7, F, G, A, Am, A7, etc.

Actually, I don't know how to play ukulele yet at the first time that I'm teaching Arthur. Thanks to the manual. It's not hard to learn like guitar or piano.

It became one of the extra source of income to me now. I suggested to Mommy Keiko, Sam's grandma, that I will teach Sam 45 minutes piano and 15 minutes ukulele.

I borrowed Sam's ukulele and it's the one I am using when teaching Arthur, Ngederong and their girl relative when I taught them last Friday, Jan. 12 from 3:45 pm.

(1140) MUSIC AND ME (Dec. 03, 2015) SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN MARRIES FIANCE

WEDDING AFTER ONE YEAR AND 10 DAYS SINCE PROPOSING
Palau Royal Resort Sous Chef David Chen, 2nd from right, finally marries his fiance after proposing on Oct. 20, 2014 at the beach of Palau Royal Resort that was initiated by DOB Michelle Liao, 3rd from right. Exactly one year and 10 days (Oct. 30, 2015), they got married and the reception was held at the newly-renovated Ming's Court of Palau Royal Resort where Roberto Hernandez, the resident musician, played piano music during the reception. He played music also during the proposal.

             SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN
                  MARRIES FIANCE

INSTEAD of playing piano music at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, Roberto Hernandez, PRR resident Musician, was invited again by Sous Chef David Chen to play music during the reception of his wedding with 375-day fiance at the newly renovated Ming's Court of PRR.

The following is the story of the proposal:

       SOUS CHEF DAVID CHEN PROPOSES
         TO GIRLFRIEND AT BREEZE BAR

On October 20, 2014, Junior Sous Chef David Chen asked me to play love songs at Breeze Bar during his proposal to his girlfriend on a Friday evening (Oct. 24) at 9pm.

I said,  "It's my day off every Friday but if it's 9pm, I can make it after attending the prayer meeting at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale)."

David is very appreciative about it. It's also the first time that he requested to me something about music.

Somebody suggested that someone should sing a love song while he is proposing. The suggested song is "Unforgettable" by Nat 'King' Cole which was 'remade' and 'revived' with his daughter Nathalie 'singing' it with him like he's still alive. That's what technology can do. The arrangement of the song is so beautiful and complicated that I have to look at the chords to play it without mistakes.

The name Gerry Medrano, Cafeteria's new cook, came to somebody's mind. We don't have time to practice that song. I just lend him the songbook where he will choose also some other songs from that.

Gerry Medrano, 2nd from left, poses with Paquito Suringa, Jr., who is absent in the Awarding Ceremony of the 2014 Palau National Chess Championship. He is holding the 1st runner-up trophy of Roberto Hernandez. At left is John Fernan Velarde, who participated in the only chess tournament that he joined -- the 2012 PNCC. He left Palau for good on May 29, 2015. New worker JR shows the certificate of participation of Roberto.                                             (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

At 8pm, I attended the Friday Prayer Meeting at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale). 10 minutes before 9, I left to fulfill my promise to play in the surprise proposal of David to his girlfriend.

At 9pm, I am already setting the keyboard at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. Gerry came 5 minutes late.

He sung first the "Unforgettable" which I set the key 2 steps lower. I don't have an idea of what pitch Gerry has. He's singing it off key so I change it to the original key and everything sounds good from there.

I don't like his choice of the next song -- "Twilight Time" by the Platters. Only the title but the lyrics are good...

Heavenly shades of night are falling, it's twilight time,
Out of the mist your voice is calling, it's twilight time,
When purple-colored curtains mark the end of day,
I hear you, my dear, at twilight time.

Deepening shadows gather splendor as day is gone,
Fingers of night will soon surrender the setting sun,
I count the moments, darling, till you're here with me,
Together, at last at twilight time.

Here in the afterglow of day
We keep our rendezvous beneath the blue
Here in the sweet and same old way
I fall in love again as I did then.

Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me like days of old,
Lighting the spark of love that fills me with dreams untold
Each day I pray for evening just to be with you,
Together, at last at twilight time.

When Gerry is singing "Put Your Head On My Shoulder", that's the time that David proposes. He's wearing complete chef uniform.

When David proposes at the beach, there is a big heart-shape of candles at the beach.

The other guests, mostly Taiwanese, are surprised as did David's girlfriend. She's in tears. Many guests have watched them during the short proposal time.

The design of the surprise heart-shaped candles at the beach was meticulously done by Palau Royal Resort DOB Michelle Liao.

Before going back to Dormitory 1, I had the above photo taken with David and his girlfriend.

Prior to playing piano at the reception, I instructed Food and Beverage Manager Mervin Lee Cuyugan not to dragged the piano at Ming's Court wooden floor so that there will be no scratches.

They set up the piano at the right side corner. I can see the guests and the couple through the shiny piano cover and took a selfie photo through that shiny piano cover part...

While playing, I notice that most of the guests are Chinese/Taiwanese so I played the first hour playing all Taiwanese/Chinese songs.

I've got an American song request --"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and later "Hotel California".

The one who requested the first song gave me a glass of red wine and later $10.00 tip.   (Ryan Lee)

Before going home, he introduced me to the new Ambassador of Taiwan to Palau Harry Tseng, who replaced the generous Ambassador Maggie Tien.

Ambassador Harry Tseng said he was impressed with my piano playing. I gave him and the guy that gave me $10.00 and red wine my card. They also gave me their cards and at that time that I realized he is the new Ambassador. The generous guy is the Palau Branch Manager of China Airlines Ryan Lee. His wife also gave me $10.00 with Ryan giving me another glass of red wine.

While they are leaving, I happened to get a photo of them.

(1093) MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 08, 2015) LADIES WITH GUYS NAME

FRENCH BEAUTY

         LADIES WITH GUYS NAME

ON Sept. 21, 2015, we have 6 American guests that occupied part of my space for playing keyboard at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. I set the keyboard about 2 feet back to accommodate them. They are all male and one of them looks like Asian and he asked me if he can play with me but he needs a guitar.
I said I have a guitar in my room and it will take me about 4-5 minutes to get it. And then here comes a lone, beautiful, sexy lady that sits next to their table. When I get the guitar, the Asian-looking guy started playing with me with some songs like “Tears In Heaven” by Eric Clapton, Hotel California (Acoustic version), Stand by Me, and some more popular songs. The lone lady is taking a video of us.
The guitarist gets tired easily because he hasn’t played guitar for a long time. But you can tell he’s really good. Later, he told me that he’s from Guam and his name is Ben. I told him that I know some Chamorro songs because my former employer of 13 years—Margarita Borja Dalton, is half Chamorro, half Palauan and half Portuguese. (That’s 3 halves! You might say. But she’s a BIG woman!)
When they left, the lone lady sits at the table close to me while I’m playing “Careless Whisper” by Wham! After finishing the song, I asked her if she would like to request and she requested “Take It Easy” by Eagles, which I have to look at the lyrics of the song to be able to sing it.
Before 11pm, (closing time for music), we have some conversation. That she is from France. I showed her my French songs and she requested “Ballade Pour Adeline”. I told her that her accent is not purely French. She said she lived in USA for a long time.
I also told her that I’ve been to other European countries like Istanbul, Turkey, Russia and Norway but haven’t been to France yet. That my teammates (Menandro Manuel and his wife Elizabeth), in 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Turkey were able to visit Italy and France after the Olympiad. And that I was able to go to these countries (including Australia in 2009) because of representing Palau to chess competitions.
Before she left, I asked for her name. She said Leo. I said it’s a guy’s name. She said yes. I mentioned to her that the mother of one of my music student has a name Noel, because her father wanted to have a boy and named her Emmanuel with Noel as nickname. I said to her that I write in Tia Belau Newspaper about chess and have some Music and Me column at http://palau-chess.blogspot.com where I featured lately some people I met with different nationalities like
We had a photo taken that I promise her to be featured in that website one of these days. HERE IT IS!
In Philippines, most guys names end in “o” that when you change it to “a”, it will become a girl’s name like my name Roberto will become a girl’s name if it’s Roberta (like Roberta Flack, the singer of “Killing Me Softly With His Song”). In Japan, many names that end in “o” are ladies names like Michiko, Kimiko, Yumiko, Yuriko, Kikuko, Kikiko Mikuto, Gwapo Kamukako, etc.
I have some arguments with my wife regarding this. She is calling our Pastor Susan Lopez as Pastora, referring to a lady pastor. They used to call a lady doctor—Doctora. But it’s not found in English-Tagalog dictionary that these are inaccurate because a pastor can be a man or a lady. I told my wife that if she will insist in calling our pastor as “Pastora”. Then how would she call a lady painter, when the male version of it is “Pintor”. If you will add “a” to it, it will become “Pintura”, which means “paint”.
And how about the “magpuputo”?, which means vendor of rice cake. If she would call it “magpuputa”, it means prostitute (or the f… word).
Two days later, Leo came back at Breeze Bar with her parents. I’ve learned from Devie Guimbal, our cashier/bartender, that her complete name is Eleonor.
There are some Japanese guests at that time and Leo asked me for the title of Japanese songs I have played, the last one is “Oribia O Kikinagara”.

DON'T DRINK YOUR RED WINE!
The Japanese guy in the middle gave me $10.00 tip and a glass of red wine. The Waves Restaurant supervisor, Fe, asked a bartender/waitress to tell me not to drink it while on duty.            (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

THE LAST WALTZ-Japanese Version

ON October 05, 2013, there are moderate number of guests at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, when I started to play piano at 7pm.

Minutes later, a Japanese couple came with their grandson (photo). While getting his food at the buffet, the guy usually sang a part of Japanese song that I'm playing.

I played Japanese songs, Taiwanese songs and American songs alternately because there are some guests of these nationalities.

The Japanese guy came to me once more and gave me $10.00 tip. He can't speak English but I understand what he is saying 70% because he speaks so clearly and got a very good and powerful voice.

He also asked a waitress to give me red wine (my choice -- good for the heart). Then he asked me if I know the song "The Last Waltz" and then he proceed to his table with a plate of food.

When I started to play the intro of that song which is sung by Engelbert Humperdinck, he runs to me and sung the song in Japanese version. He's really got a powerful voice that he needs no microphone.

Fe, the supervisor, made a sign to me that he can't sing. But he's already singing and it would be a unethical to stop him from singing in the middle of the song.

I have a mixed feeling while playing with him singing -- The Japanese version of the song is so fitting to his voice and the selection of lyrics is so right that I'm inspired to play with expression but it's not fully expressive as there is a hindrance of getting another demerit for letting a guest sing.

After the song, Fe talked to him that he is not allowed to sing. When he sits down to his table, the red wine was put near to my water goblet. I put it on the top side of piano and the red wine was put to the place where the goblet was.

Then Jovy Rodriguez, the lady bartender, told me that she will put the wine in a plastic glass and I can drink it at Breeze Bar.

While I continue to play the rest of my schedule there, the former Executive Chef Masaki Horie, who was the brainchild of disallowing guests to sing or touch the piano, passed by with the new Exec. Chef Mr. Daisuke Kunii.

Chef Horie is also the one that tells the staff not to allow me to drink the alcoholic beverage that the guests are giving me.

I discovered that personal memo/order when a Filipino guest told me that, "I wanted to give you a drink but the waitress said that you are not allowed to drink while on duty."

It didn't even come to Chef Horie's mind that if customers want to give me drinks, they should have give me juice or Drink of the Month (DOM) without alcohol so that it adds to the sales.

My main concern for accepting drinks that the guests are giving me is help in adding to the sales. Most of the drinks that guests are giving me, especially beers in can, I just keep in my room.

At 9:00pm, after securing my things and the piano, I went to their table and we talk for a few minutes. They really can speak English so I have to really stretch my hearing and understanding of the words they are saying.

I asked them for a souvenir photo before I go to Breeze Bar. When we are posing at the piano, my cell phone's camera is not working (with error warning). I have to asked them to use their camera first and turned the power off of my camera.

I proceed to Breeze Bar with the red wine in a plastic glass. There, the regular guests (the Pineda brothers: Bobby, Ogie and Dodie) are there.

They have some family discussions which is very nice to hear. The side of one is different from the other 2. Half hour later, an American couple sit at the table beside them.

When I started to play "Hotel California", they are singing with it so I sang the song on the 2nd stanza. Four of us are now singing -the couple, Bobby and me.

I followed it up with the 2nd Eagles song "Desperado" and the American guy knows the song and sang with me.

All the other songs --Stand By Me, Let It Be, Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, Careless Whisper were also sung like a choir.

Bobby sang "Sometimes When We Touch" and "My Way" and also do the "drumming" using a chopstick, plates and table to the amazement of the American couple.

Before 11pm, the couple left and at exactly 11pm, I stopped playing. While securing the keyboard, the couple came back with their luggage. They are leaving in an hour to go back to USA.

The guy is expecting me to be playing for another hour. I just sit down with them and they gave me a shot of sake (Japanese wine).

When the conversation was focused to chess, I asked the guy if he plays chess. He said just a little. They are surprised to know that I represented Palau in Australia in 2009, in Russia in 2010, in Istanbul, Turkey last year and will represent Palau again in 2014 in Norway.

The lady said they will follow the event next year and hopes to see me again in the news or TV. I gave them my calling card and wish them a good and safe flight back home.

VERY NICE TO MEET RIN KITA AGAIN
If a simple letter/card can be treasured and cherished, what more with this picture with a beautiful girl that wrote me a lovely note, although in Japanese character, to touch the hearts of many including PRR GM Isao Takahashi, who kept that note/letter for more than a year!                                                    (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

RIN KITA IS BACK AFTER 2 YEARS

TWO weeks before going to Istanbul for 2012 World Chess Olympiad, the 56th issue of Tia Belau was published with Music and Me story of “A Letter From A 5-year-old Japanese Girl”.

The first line of that story is “While playing piano at Waves Restaurant on Sunday, March 20, 2011, a 5-year-old girl is watching me play.”

Exactly 2 years and 1 day (March 21, 2013), that Japanese girl is watching me play again. After finishing the song that I’m playing, I gave her my card and asked her name. She said her name but I misheard it as “Kin Jita”.

Then I played some Japanese songs and she sung some parts where she knows in soft voice. Then I showed her my scrap book with photos and print copy of some Music and Me issues with black and white photos.

My instinct ‘commanded’ me to go to the last part of the book where the letter/card of Rin Kita was posted. Then I said, “This is written and made by Rin Kita. Are you Rin Kita?” When she nodded, that’s the time that I’m sure now that she is really her 2 years ago.

When I mentioned to her that she is the one that make and draw the hearts, grapes and flags of Palau and Japan in there, she is almost in tears.

She can’t believe that a simple note, letter and drawing like that will be treasured and cherished by someone. I asked her, “Where is your mom?” And I said, go ahead and bring the book and show it to her.

When they come to me, we have pictures taken –one in their camera and one in my cell phone’s camera. It’s my day off the next day (Friday) but on Saturday, they come again to have dinner near the piano.

When I played “Oribia O Kikinagara”, Rin Kita sang on some parts that she knows. Her mom can sing all the last parts of the song.

We talked for a while about their stay in Palau 2 years ago. It’s their 3rd time now in Palau. Rin Kita is 6 years old, not 5 as I have written. She’s 8 years old now and very beautiful.

I read to them the contents of “A Letter From A 5-year-old Japanese Girl”—about the accident when Rin Kita accidentally drop a glass and some broken glass hit her leg; about the letter/card and how our GM Isao Takahashi translated it to me.

I asked them also to check the website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com where I will feature Rin Kita again. She was featured (without picture) in Music and Me issue 56 (Aug. 16, 2012) and no. 280th post in that website. I posted it on August 18, 2012—a week before my trip to Istanbul.
