(1537) MAGNUS CARLSEN WINS TATA STEEL CHESS TOURNAMENT 2018

   MAGNUS CARLSEN WINS TATA STEEL
           CHESS TOURNAMENT 2018

If GM Wesley So won the strongest tournament in the world, the 2017 Tata Steel Chess Tournament, this year, the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway won this prestigious tourney after an exciting last round.

At the start of the matches, five Grand Masters still stood a chance of winning, with Anish Giri and Carlsen leading the pack.

Because both of their games ended in a draw, they had to play a tiebreak, consisting of 2 blitz game (5 minutes for each player with 3 extra seconds per move), which was won by Carlsen.

This is Carlsen's 6th trophy from Wijk-aan Zee.

3rd place went to Vladimir Kramnik, thanks to the better additional criteria since he tied with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who had the same score of 8.5 points out of 13 games.

THE RESULTS:
1. Giri, Anish (9 pts. --2752 Rating) 2. Carlsen, Magnus (9 pts. --2834) 3. Kramnik, Vladimir (8.5--2787) 4. Mamedyarov (8.5--2804) 5. Anand, Viswanathan (8.0--2767) 6. So, Wesley (8.0--2792) 7. Karjakin, Sergey (7.5--2753) 8. Svidler, Peter (6.0--2768) 9. Wei, Yi (5.5--2743) 10. Jones, Gawain C B (5.0--2640) 11. Caruana, Fabiano (5.0--2811) 12. Matlakov, Maxim (5.0--2718) 13. Adhiban, B (3.5--2655) 14. Hou, Yifan (2.5--2680)

Vidit Gujrathi (India) has won the Tata Steel Challengers, thus earning a promotion to the Tata Steel 2019. Vidit justified the starting position scoring 9 points out of 13 games, and finishing the event as sole first with a whole point ahead of the runner-ups.

Last year, Gawain Jones won the Tata Steel Challengers and finished a decent 10th place despite being the lowest rated.

Stefan Kuipers the Top Nine Round event, earning a spot to the Tata Steel Challengers next year.

This year, the Tata Steel Chess, often called as "Wimbledon of Chess", celebrated its 80th anniversary and took place in a coastal village of Wijk-aan Zee, north Holland, with locations of the playing venues: Beeld en Geluid, in Hilversum and the Academy building of the University of Groningen.

Tata Steel Chess 2018 gathered thousands of chess lovers, top world Grandmasters, visitors, 1800 participants of the various tournaments of Tata Steel events with the unique opportunity for the amateurs and the youngest to play chess in the same venue as their chess idols.

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019 will take place from 11-27 January 2019.

(1479) CARLSEN--3-TIME STANDARD AND BLITZ WORLD CHAMPION (TBN-Feb. 12, 2018)

30 MINUTES CHESS, 30 MINUTES PIANO FOR GRAY
My latest chess/piano student Gray, who is only 6 years old, is very enthusiastic in both chess and piano. Kids’ brain is like a new computer, that whatever input you put in it, it will be absorbed easily. Unlike old people who need constant repetitions, as what Geoffrey Borg told us when he conducted a FIDE Trainers’ Seminar in April 2014. I topped that seminar and gained a FIDE Instructor (FI) title (Palau’s first). Among my chess/music students, Nick Nehez has the potential to be the next Palau Junior Champion while Angelica Magno (chess/guitar) is now a member of Palau team to 2018 WCO.         (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

    CARLSEN-- 3-TIME STANDARD
    AND BLITZ WORLD CHAMPION
The King Salman World Blitz Chess Championship concluded on Fri. Dec. 29, 2017 in Riyadh with Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia) emerging convincing champions of their respective section.

After the first day of the championship Magnus Carlsen trailed full two points behind the leader and 2016 champion Sergey Karjakin. However, the impressive winning streak on the second day, where he conceded only two draws in ten games, put Carlsen ahead of the field and he secured the title with a round to spare. His total score in the end is 16/21 points.

Point and a half behind the champion are Sergey Karjakin and
World Rapid Champion Viswanathan Anand. Karjakin took the silver medal on better tie-break, but the prize money will be shared. This is Carlsen's third world blitz title, having previously won in Moscow 2009 and Dubai 2014. He is also a 3-time Standard world champion having dethroned Anand in 2012 in India and again in Soci, Russia in 2014. In the 2016 World Chess Championship against Karjakin of Russia in New York, Carlsen defended his standard title again convincingly.

Carlsen stated in an interview with FIDE press officer: "Obviously, I am extremely happy. Yesterday was a difficult day for me, but today everything went beyond expectations. This title means a lot to me, especially after losing that last game from the leading position in the Rapid Championship. So it's a massive win."
President of the Saudi Arabia Chess Federation Al Sulaiman Mottaz Abdulrahman made the ceremonial first move in the game between Levon Aronian and Magnus Carlsen in the presence of FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos

In the closing ceremony HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki AlFaisal, deputy chairman of the General Sports Authority, awarded the trophies to the winners of the King Salman World Chess Championships.

The 2017 King Salman World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships were held from 26-30th December in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with 238 world's top players competing for the prestigious titles and 2,000,000 USD prize fund.

Nelson Sisior--1018 (1956) 59. Eryn Reklai --1004 (1990) 60. Francois Millimono—1001 (1986)

I am requesting those players who borrowed chess sets and clocks to please bring those on Sun. Feb. 18 for the 2018 PBCC including those used in the Awarding at Eric’s house. We are expecting big turnout of participants. There’s a need to use the medium size chess sets donated by ACF/Paul Spiller.

The top seed in this event is my discovery Bobot Tan, who won the 7-player Blitz Chess contest held after the penultimate round of 2017 Palau National Chess Championship on Dec. 10. He scored 5 victories against 1 loss (to Jeff Balbalosa). Tito Cabunagan is 2nd with 4 wins, a draw and a loss; Jeff is 3rd with 4-2 slate; I am 4th with 3-3 card; Cyril is 5th at 2-4; Rustum Cabuso had a win, a draw and 4 losses for 6th place and at 7th is Angelo Salvadora with a win and 5 losses.

Angelo was edged by Rustum as the 4th member of Palau Open team to 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia in the tiebreak at the conclusion of 2017 PNCC. Champ Bobot, Cyril, Tito and reserve Leif Toribiong is the composition of the Open team. An email from Tito: he is volunteering to be the Team Captain of the Open team so that Angelo will be included in the team. He is asking this matter to be tackled in the next PCF Board Meeting. His last words “I wanted to have everybody on the Top Rank experience the international tournament” is something that doesn’t do judgment when he and Cyril withdraw from the 2016 Baku Olympiad. The Top 10 players to be selected for that Olympiad (excluding them) were Jeff, Allan Alcid, Paquito Suringa, Jr., me, Manuel Mahor, Jr., Angelo, Dennis Gonzales and CM Bernardo Garcia.

If the “Top Rank” that Tito is talking about will be followed here, Mahor and Angelo were ahead of Dennis. But Dennis made it to Baku because Mahor and Angelo were not asked if they are willing to go and commit to the team for $500.00 bond for each member that they paid and was refunded.

Cyril said that Team Captain will have to be decided by Board Members. Angelo can’t be team captain because he doesn’t have a FIDE trainer title (FI, NI or DI at least). Next in line to him is Paquito, who has a DI title but doesn’t have a laptop, which is a very powerful tool a serious chess player must have. Even though you have a laptop but doesn’t have Chessbase installed in it, it’s impossible to prepare a team against future opponents. Next to Paquito is Dennis, that I recommend to be the Women’s team captain as I will be the Open team captain and Delegate as Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps suggested and him being the Head of Delegation.

In the 2012 Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, there is a possibility that Mohammad Manik Hossein will be the team captain of Palau women’s team. But he strongly rejected it because he doesn’t like to spend almost $2,000.00 of his own money and not being able to play. For this reason, Dennis might not accept the suggested position as the bond for this Olympiad is $1k (half will be shouldered by PCF).

(1330) 723rd ISSUE OF CHESS MATE'S 14th YEAR; http://palau-chess.blogspot.com is 5 Years (TBN-Jan. 09, 2017)

FIND A WAY, NOT AN EXCUSE
Even the t-shirt that he is wearing, you can still learn something from CM Joselito Marcos. FIND A WAY, NOT AN EXCUSE is a common attitude of many. Joselito invested a lot of time and money for books and education. Even in chess software, he’s always up to date like the Mega Database 2016 that he installed in my laptop where more than 6 million chess games were recorded in PGN format.

                723rd ISSUE OF
      CHESS MATE'S 14th YEAR;
  http://palau-chess.blogspot.com
                   is 5 Years

THIS 723rd issue of Chess Mate’s 14th year is one of my most memorable years in terms of gaining more knowledge, knowing more friends (old and new) and participation to my 4th World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan in Sept. 01-14, 2016 where Palau fielded in 2 neophytes in Olympiad – Allan Alcid and Paquito Suringa, Jr. My other teammates were PCF President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps as Delegate, AFM Jeffrey Balbalosa at Board 3, Dennis Gonzales at Reserve/Board 5 and CM Joselito Marcos as Head of Delegation and acting as Team Captain whenever I’m playing at Board 4.

I was the Team Captain in the 1st and 9th round and Joselito in the 2nd-8th and 10th-final (11th). I must admit that I can’t do what Joselito has done when he’s the team captain—remembering all the positions of all the 4 boards move by move! When I’m the captain in round 9 vs. Guernsey, I can remember only that all players played and defended very well esp. Dennis, who scored the only point for Palau. Joselito is still beside me getting more support from him while we alternate in watching the live top board games esp. games of USA, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, India, England, Norway, Philippines,  Australia,  and China, the defending champion.

Palau is reaping from Joselito’s vast experience as coach, captain, arbiter and player in Philippines since 1978. He has donated time, knowledge, cash prizes, books, technical and moral support more than any other members of Palau Chess Federation except me. His best Christmas gift so far for Palau chess is his creation of PCF website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com in Dec. 26, 2011 where it was viewed by 240,059 individuals as of Nov. 22, 2016 from 132 countries including Syria! Yes, chess is still played in Syria despite the civil war. I became the webmaster of this site and I have posted 1,320 posts since then. The top 73 posts that have page views of at least 300 can be seen in this link: http://palau-chess.blogspot.com/2016/11/1304-top-73-palau-chess-posts-page.html

The latest news about GM Wesley So’s ascent to No. 4 in the world was also shared by Joselito:
Wesley So is the champion of London Chess Classic ($75,000 winner's prize). He also topped the Grand Chess Tour ($100,000). He is now 4th in world ranking with 2807 and achieved his goal before 2016 ends, behind Magnus Carlsen (2840), Fabiano Caruana (2827) and Vladimir Kramnik (2810).

"He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he's still improving," Kasparov tweeted. "To win two of the strongest tourneys in a year, two in a row, is a huge achievement"-Kramnik.

"I guess the word that comes to mind is effortless. He doesn't even seem to be trying too hard."-Viswanathan Anand.

"He's the hottest player right now."-Hikaru Nakamura.

Wesley is now 4th in the live rating list with 2807.8 and there are only 4 of them on 2800s.

Special games were played between top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and OZCC-bound 3rd seed Tito Cabunagan at Jeff’s place with Cyril winning in 41 moves of French Defense to make his chance intact for another PNCC plum. Jeff also subdued Tito in 42 moves of English Opening but he might lose his 3 remaining games vs. Paquito, Angie and against me because his father passed away and he went to Philippines on Dec. 27. No definite date of his coming back to Palau. If he will missed the last day of 2016-2017 PNCC, his 3 remaining games will all be default losses. Tito finished with 3-1-5 record.

                Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3 by Joselito Marcos: 1. Re3 Kxh6 2. Rh3 Bh7 3. Bg5+ Kxg5 4. Rh5#. If 3. Bf2+ Kg5 4. Be3#

I'm wondering why a man from Bank of Hawaii called me and ask to get my new card/s (Savings joint account with my wife), when the expiration is still in 2018. He used a scissor to cut my card into half and replaced it with a new one that is exactly the same as the old one. The new expiration date is now Dec. 2019 and the double "good thru" (one big and one small), is now only one and very small.

         AN APPRECIATED BREAKFAST
                      CONVERSATION

THREE days before Christmas, I happened to have a good conversation with Food and Beverage Manager of Palau Royal Resort Mervin Lee Cuyugan at breakfast time at Cafeteria of PRR.

I started the conversation with, “I’ve got a call from Bank of Hawaii telling me to go there tomorrow to get my new bank debit savings card/s. When I check the expiration of the old one that they will replace, it’s still in Sept. 2018.”
He asked if that’s the usual procedure. I said no but they charged $4.00 every month to savings deposit if your deposit is less than $400.00. I also added that it’s a joint account of me and my wife Flor. Mervin asked how much is the interest rate in Palau. I said, in late 1990’s, it’s very good with us getting interest every month of $38.00 or $45.00 but now, not even $2.00 in one year!
I also mentioned to him that when I go to Norway for the 2014 World Chess Olympiad, I used my 2 debit cards to purchase items in Norway and Philippines. When I come back to Palau, my card in Bank of Guam has been blocked because I’m supposed to inform the bank that I will use that card in other countries outside Palau.
4 days before going to 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan, I informed Bank of Hawaii about my trip to Philippines, Thailand and Turkey (for stopover), and the final destination – Azerbaijan. The lady employee of Bank of Hawaii is not sure about Azerbaijan. I explained to her that it’s the former republic of USSR, which now becomes 15 independent countries (Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kyrghyztan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Moldova, Turkmekistan, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakstan and Lithuania) To be sure, she looked at the list of countries and in letter A, she found Azerbaijan.
The same thing when I asked permission to use my Bank of Guam card in Philippines, Thailand and Turkey (just in case I need to use it) and Azerbaijan. I have to explain the same thing about the former USSR.
We talked also about GM Eugene Torre and his wife Marylin, where we are at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of 2012 and 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey and Tromso, Norway respectively. About him being Asia’s first Grand Master.
I mentioned to him the latest achievement of Filipino GM Wesley So, who changed federation 2 years ago (USA), winning 2 strong tournaments and achieving a 2807 FIDE rating and now No. 4 in the world. He’s No. 48 in 2013. It was shared to me by my best friend CM Joselito Marcos…
“Wesley So won the London Chess Classic ($75,000 winner's prize). He also topped the Grand Chess Tour ($100,000).
He is now 4th in world ranking with 2807 (achieved his goal before 2016 ends) behind Magnus Carlsen (2840), Fabiano Caruana (2827) and Vladimir Kramnik (2810).

"He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he's still improving," Kasparov tweeted.
"To win two of the strongest tourneys in a year, two in a row, is a huge achievement."-Kramnik.
"I guess the word that comes to mind is effortless. He doesn't even seem to be trying too hard."-Viswanathan Anand.
"He's the hottest player right now."-Hikaru Nakamura. Wesley is now 4th in the live rating list with 2807.8 and there are only 4 of them on 2800s.”

At the end of our conversation, Mervin said something that I rarely heard from somebody who has learned a lot from a simple conversation –“I appreciate this conversation that my knowledge has improved about this subject – chess.”
I have the same appreciation to CM Joselito Marcos whenever we have talked about different subjects and mostly, I am the one who is saying what Mervin have said to me.
When I am delivering message to Morning Devotion, Offertory Message and Evangelistic Night messages at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale, I used to mentioned that before becoming a brethren of this church, my conversation with anybody will last for hours if the topic is chess and music. But now, I can talk for hours if the subject is chess, music and the Gospel or Bible.
