(1330) 723rd ISSUE OF CHESS MATE'S 14th YEAR; http://palau-chess.blogspot.com is 5 Years (TBN-Jan. 09, 2017)

FIND A WAY, NOT AN EXCUSE
Even the t-shirt that he is wearing, you can still learn something from CM Joselito Marcos. FIND A WAY, NOT AN EXCUSE is a common attitude of many. Joselito invested a lot of time and money for books and education. Even in chess software, he’s always up to date like the Mega Database 2016 that he installed in my laptop where more than 6 million chess games were recorded in PGN format.

                723rd ISSUE OF
      CHESS MATE'S 14th YEAR;
  http://palau-chess.blogspot.com
                   is 5 Years

THIS 723rd issue of Chess Mate’s 14th year is one of my most memorable years in terms of gaining more knowledge, knowing more friends (old and new) and participation to my 4th World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan in Sept. 01-14, 2016 where Palau fielded in 2 neophytes in Olympiad – Allan Alcid and Paquito Suringa, Jr. My other teammates were PCF President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps as Delegate, AFM Jeffrey Balbalosa at Board 3, Dennis Gonzales at Reserve/Board 5 and CM Joselito Marcos as Head of Delegation and acting as Team Captain whenever I’m playing at Board 4.

I was the Team Captain in the 1st and 9th round and Joselito in the 2nd-8th and 10th-final (11th). I must admit that I can’t do what Joselito has done when he’s the team captain—remembering all the positions of all the 4 boards move by move! When I’m the captain in round 9 vs. Guernsey, I can remember only that all players played and defended very well esp. Dennis, who scored the only point for Palau. Joselito is still beside me getting more support from him while we alternate in watching the live top board games esp. games of USA, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, India, England, Norway, Philippines,  Australia,  and China, the defending champion.

Palau is reaping from Joselito’s vast experience as coach, captain, arbiter and player in Philippines since 1978. He has donated time, knowledge, cash prizes, books, technical and moral support more than any other members of Palau Chess Federation except me. His best Christmas gift so far for Palau chess is his creation of PCF website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com in Dec. 26, 2011 where it was viewed by 240,059 individuals as of Nov. 22, 2016 from 132 countries including Syria! Yes, chess is still played in Syria despite the civil war. I became the webmaster of this site and I have posted 1,320 posts since then. The top 73 posts that have page views of at least 300 can be seen in this link: http://palau-chess.blogspot.com/2016/11/1304-top-73-palau-chess-posts-page.html

The latest news about GM Wesley So’s ascent to No. 4 in the world was also shared by Joselito:
Wesley So is the champion of London Chess Classic ($75,000 winner's prize). He also topped the Grand Chess Tour ($100,000). He is now 4th in world ranking with 2807 and achieved his goal before 2016 ends, behind Magnus Carlsen (2840), Fabiano Caruana (2827) and Vladimir Kramnik (2810).

"He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he's still improving," Kasparov tweeted. "To win two of the strongest tourneys in a year, two in a row, is a huge achievement"-Kramnik.

"I guess the word that comes to mind is effortless. He doesn't even seem to be trying too hard."-Viswanathan Anand.

"He's the hottest player right now."-Hikaru Nakamura.

Wesley is now 4th in the live rating list with 2807.8 and there are only 4 of them on 2800s.

Special games were played between top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and OZCC-bound 3rd seed Tito Cabunagan at Jeff’s place with Cyril winning in 41 moves of French Defense to make his chance intact for another PNCC plum. Jeff also subdued Tito in 42 moves of English Opening but he might lose his 3 remaining games vs. Paquito, Angie and against me because his father passed away and he went to Philippines on Dec. 27. No definite date of his coming back to Palau. If he will missed the last day of 2016-2017 PNCC, his 3 remaining games will all be default losses. Tito finished with 3-1-5 record.

                Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3 by Joselito Marcos: 1. Re3 Kxh6 2. Rh3 Bh7 3. Bg5+ Kxg5 4. Rh5#. If 3. Bf2+ Kg5 4. Be3#

Special 14th Anniversary Puzzle No. 11: White to move and mates in 5 (Solution next issue)
(I will give $14.00 to each of the first 4 persons that can solve this puzzle)

THE PUBLISHED PHOTO FOR THE 14TH YEAR SPECIAL EDITION OF CHESS MATE IS CORRECT, BUT THE STORY IS NOT -- "700th ISSUE OF CHESS MATE"

WRONG CAPTION IS:

ELLA AND ELI TARGET 2018 WCO IN BATUMI, GEORGIA
Ella Asuncion, 7th from left, GM Kawaguchi, left, secretary, celebrated her birthday on July 20th with Palau Royal Resort staff. Two weeks ago, Ella showed interest to be with Palau Chess Team in the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. Likewise, Elizalde Madrinan, Japanese Chef, is also targeting a slot at the Open section of 2018 WCO. GOOD LUCK and GANBATTE MASU!

Even in chess software, he’s always up to date like the Mega Database 2016 that he installed in my laptop where more than 6 million chess games were recorded in PGN format.

                   WRONG STORY:

                                                          700th ISSUE OF CHESS MATE
THE FIRST ever chess tourney in Palau was held in June 09, 2002 and 193 days later (Dec. 29, 2002), the first issue of Chess Mate by Roberto Hernandez was published with the first line as this:
“THREE years ago, I was approached by Tutii Joe Chilton, the most active Palauan chess player today, to form a chess club. Without hesitation, I agreed to donate my free time, chess books, use of my chess clock, and experience to develop chess in Palau. The idea didn't materialize but in the middle of this year, TFCP (The Filipino Community In Palau) Vice President Sergio Alemania asked me if there were enough chess players in Palau to hold the first-ever chess tournament in Palau. He assigned me to be the chairman of the tilt that drew 20 contestants including four women.”
The 75 continuous publishing of Chess Mate articles resumed even if Roberto, his wife Flor and daughter Karen had a vacation in May 28-July 16, 2004 with issues No. 76-81 prepared in advance till their return and Karen staying in Philippines for her Nursing studies.
The same thing Roberto has done when he went to Australia in 2009, in Russia in 2010, in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012, in Norway in 2014 and in this coming 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan (Sept. 01-14).
During the Russian Olympiad, Roberto’s part 4 of his prepared articles was not published because the Editor thought it’s the same as the previous 3. The title is “I Was Tortured in the Pasadena Jailhouse” by Bobby Fischer. The first 3 parts were published but not the conclusion. Thus, it’s the first unpublished issue (No. 408).
While participating in the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, Roberto is feeding Tia Belau with the latest results of the Olympiad through emails aside from the prepared 4 articles but no issues have been published for Aug. 27, Sept. 10 and 17. The Sept. 03 issue was done after coming back from the Olympiad.
No issue on Dec. 10, 2012 because of Typhoon Bopha and because of printing machines problem in March 11 and 18, 2013, no issues also for 2 consecutive weeks.
Exactly on the 11th year of Chess Mate (Dec. 29, 2013), the deadline was advanced by a day without notification from publisher and the New Year’s issue was missed. And the last missed issue of Chess Mate was during the last few weeks’ tenure of Joel as graphics designer, issue of March 31, 2014, where there is a bad weather and only one game was played in the 2014 Open Chess Tournament.
He makes a lot of errors in publishing the titles. While they are at 2014 Norway Chess Olympiad, Roberto prepared 4 articles and one of them is entitled “Chess Jokes Part 4”, he printed “Long Hours at the Beauty Parlor” instead. He even missed the punch line of a very good joke. But at least he always says sorry for every mistake he committed.
The itinerary of Palau Chess Team to Baku has changed from Palau-Manila-Dubai-Moscow-Baku-China-Manila to Palau-Manila-Thailand-Turkey-Baku-Turkey-Thailand-Manila because of cheaper rates in this route. The tickets were bought more than a month earlier for discounted prices.
Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3483: 1. h8=N!! Ke8 2. Bc6 mate. Only Kyle Soriano solved this puzzle in 20 minutes and 3 clues—White Bishop will mate, not a move by knight and dark-colored bishop. Kyle won $1.00 that he put in his piggy bank of quarter dollars (coins).
This week’s 700th issue Puzzle No. 3485: White to move and mates in 2. The first person to solve will win 700 cents or $7.00.

(1323) AN APPRECIATED BREAKFAST CONVERSATION

THE GUY FROM BANK OF HAWAII CUT THIS CARD
I'm wondering why a man from Bank of Hawaii called me and ask to get my new card/s (Savings joint account with my wife), when the expiration is still in 2018. He used a scissor to cut my card into half and replaced it with a new one that is exactly the same as the old one. The new expiration date is now Dec. 2019 and the double "good thru" (one big and one small), is now only one and very small.

         AN APPRECIATED BREAKFAST
                      CONVERSATION

THREE days before Christmas, I happened to have a good conversation with Food and Beverage Manager of Palau Royal Resort Mervin Lee Cuyugan at breakfast time at Cafeteria of PRR.

I started the conversation with, “I’ve got a call from Bank of Hawaii telling me to go there tomorrow to get my new bank debit savings card/s. When I check the expiration of the old one that they will replace, it’s still in Sept. 2018.”
He asked if that’s the usual procedure. I said no but they charged $4.00 every month to savings deposit if your deposit is less than $400.00. I also added that it’s a joint account of me and my wife Flor. Mervin asked how much is the interest rate in Palau. I said, in late 1990’s, it’s very good with us getting interest every month of $38.00 or $45.00 but now, not even $2.00 in one year!
I also mentioned to him that when I go to Norway for the 2014 World Chess Olympiad, I used my 2 debit cards to purchase items in Norway and Philippines. When I come back to Palau, my card in Bank of Guam has been blocked because I’m supposed to inform the bank that I will use that card in other countries outside Palau.
4 days before going to 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan, I informed Bank of Hawaii about my trip to Philippines, Thailand and Turkey (for stopover), and the final destination – Azerbaijan. The lady employee of Bank of Hawaii is not sure about Azerbaijan. I explained to her that it’s the former republic of USSR, which now becomes 15 independent countries (Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kyrghyztan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Moldova, Turkmekistan, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakstan and Lithuania) To be sure, she looked at the list of countries and in letter A, she found Azerbaijan.
The same thing when I asked permission to use my Bank of Guam card in Philippines, Thailand and Turkey (just in case I need to use it) and Azerbaijan. I have to explain the same thing about the former USSR.
We talked also about GM Eugene Torre and his wife Marylin, where we are at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of 2012 and 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey and Tromso, Norway respectively. About him being Asia’s first Grand Master.
I mentioned to him the latest achievement of Filipino GM Wesley So, who changed federation 2 years ago (USA), winning 2 strong tournaments and achieving a 2807 FIDE rating and now No. 4 in the world. He’s No. 48 in 2013. It was shared to me by my best friend CM Joselito Marcos…
“Wesley So won the London Chess Classic ($75,000 winner's prize). He also topped the Grand Chess Tour ($100,000).
He is now 4th in world ranking with 2807 (achieved his goal before 2016 ends) behind Magnus Carlsen (2840), Fabiano Caruana (2827) and Vladimir Kramnik (2810).

"He showed great consistency and, bad news for opponents, he's still improving," Kasparov tweeted.
"To win two of the strongest tourneys in a year, two in a row, is a huge achievement."-Kramnik.
"I guess the word that comes to mind is effortless. He doesn't even seem to be trying too hard."-Viswanathan Anand.
"He's the hottest player right now."-Hikaru Nakamura. Wesley is now 4th in the live rating list with 2807.8 and there are only 4 of them on 2800s.”

At the end of our conversation, Mervin said something that I rarely heard from somebody who has learned a lot from a simple conversation –“I appreciate this conversation that my knowledge has improved about this subject – chess.”
I have the same appreciation to CM Joselito Marcos whenever we have talked about different subjects and mostly, I am the one who is saying what Mervin have said to me.
When I am delivering message to Morning Devotion, Offertory Message and Evangelistic Night messages at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale, I used to mentioned that before becoming a brethren of this church, my conversation with anybody will last for hours if the topic is chess and music. But now, I can talk for hours if the subject is chess, music and the Gospel or Bible.

(1215) MUSIC AND ME (March 24, 2016) RUSSIAN COUPLE VASSILY GROMOV AND HIS WIFE

ANOTHER RUSSIAN COUPLE AT BREEZE BAR
The Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort is becoming the hang-out place of European tourists specifically Russians. Here, Mr. Vassily Gromov and his wife enjoy the music of Roberto Hernandez and their conversation about music, travel, places and chess.                         (Photo by Roberto Hernandez -- Taken by Den Flores)

                    RUSSIAN COUPLE
       VASSILY GROMOV AND WIFE

MARCH 11, 1983 is the civil wedding date of Roberto Hernandez and his wife Flor. They got married in the church on Sept. 25, 1983. Two years later, their first and only child, Karen Gennibeth, was born on May 18, 1985. Roberto accepted a job in Bahrain in January 29, 1987-April 1989 as musician in Khayam Taverna (Greek Restaurant). He accepted another musician job in Palau on Feb. 04, 1992 and 2 years later, took his family (wife and daughter) to Palau and live there since June 17, 1995.

March 11, 2016, Roberto met a Russian couple –Mr. Vassily Gromov and his wife. Upon knowing they are Russians, he gave Mr. Gromov his card with his Russian name written on it. Mr. Gromov needs to put on his reading glass to be able to read it although there are enough fluorescent lights now at Breeze Bar for a change. They offered Roberto a drink and he ordered the one they are drinking… local draft beer Red Rooster Light. With the suggestion from his wife, Mr. Gromov also gave Roberto $5.00 tip because he played the most popular Russian song that he knows--the Russian version of “Those Were The Days” by Mary Hopskin.
Mr. Gromov said that he is from a family of military members in Russia and has many relatives and high ranking official (general) in Russian military. Roberto told them that he’s been to Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia in Sept. – Oct. 2010 representing Palau in the World Chess Olympiad. And also in Australia, Istanbul, Turkey and Norway as well as this year’s 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan. They know Baku very well. When Roberto mentioned to them that former world chess champion Gary Kasparov was born there, Mr. Gromov said, “Kasparov is too Americanized.” Maybe being in New York for many years made him think Kasparov is now being influenced by Americans.

He said also that there are many Russians, about 12, coming in the next few days and all of them will be checking in at Palau Royal Resort.
A few days later, they’re now listening to Roberto’s music but mostly they are talking and drinking. Sometimes, Mr. Gromov and his wife will sit on different table and sometimes joining them. Always when they arrive, they never forget to wave to Roberto as well as before leaving to sleep.
Long time ago, Mr. Gromov said, he can speak English very well. But now that he stays in Russia for many years, he forgot many English words. Two days before they leave, Mr. Gromov gave Roberto something like a native Russian food, like a candy bar with labels all written in Russian. The animals on the label are a mother bear and 3 cubs.
While talking on that eve of March 11, 2016, we notice the 'cat pet' of PRR. I took a shot of it with bartender Den Flores serving the other table full of Chinese...

Mr. Gromov said that cats in Russia is much, much more bigger like this one in Norway.

(1041) "NEXT GAME MAY BE DECISIVE FOR TITLE (Kasparov-Karpov London Match) The Khaleej Times - Aug. 03, 1986

This file photo shows Kasparov during the international chess tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan, in April 1980, where he gained the distinction of becoming the youngest Grandmaster at the age of 17.

Kasparov's original challenge of Karpov was in Moscow. From September 10, 1984 to February 9, 1985, and even that was not long enough for a proper finish. The president of the International Chess Federation, Florencio Campomanes of the Philippines, stepped in and annulled the contest after the 48th game.

The second match reverted to the rules in effect from 1951 to 1972 -- a maximum of 24 games were to be played, victory going to the player who amassed six victories or 12 1/2 points.

The specter of delaying tactics for interminable draws was banished.

Perhaps even more important, he had come to respect Karpov's trenchant endgame play and not to be caught flatfooted, as he had been in the 9th game of the first match. Moreover, he had become more at home with Karpov's slow-maneuvering trench warfare.
        of a year.

Kasparov and Karpov have already beaten that record, having played 72 championship match games in a year and two months.

They now have Karpov's return match with which to swell their gargantuan totals.

Leningrad plans to match the prizes, but in any event, Kasparov and Karpov have both donated their prize to the Chernobyl disaster fund in an act of generosity extraordinary among chess competitors.

The match will follow the same format as the last one. The maximum number of games will be 24. And the first player to amass six victories outright of 12 1/2 points wins. Each victory is worth one point, and a draw gives each player half point. In the event of a tie match, Kasparov will retain his title.

The games will be played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in reserve, if needed, for unfinished games. The playing sessions will be from 5pm to 10pm London time with each player allowed 2 and a half hours to complete 40 moves. Each player is permitted three postponements.

The 3rd game ended in a draw on Friday after 35 moves.

The split decision, the third in succession, was an uneventful affair with Karpov playing white.

(951) GEORGIAN GM EXPELLED FROM DUBAI OPEN FOR CHEATING (TBN-May 11, 2015)

GM CHEATER
Georgia will host the 2018 World Chess Olympiad and the cheating incident in the 2015 Dubai Open involving Georgian GM Gaioz Nigalidze will somehow be a blow to its credibility. Their top GM Baadur Jovaba has beaten current world champion Magnus Carlsen in the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

   GEORGIAN GRANDMASTER EXPELLED
              FROM 2015 DUBAI OPEN
                      FOR CHEATING

A CHESS Grandmaster has been thrown out of an international tournament after he made repeated trips to the toilet to allegedly check tactics on a mobile phone he had hidden inside a cubicle.
Gaioz Nigalidze, the current Georgian champion and their No. 8 top player, was expelled from the Dubai Open for using his smart phone in a match against Armenian Grandmaster Tigran L Petrosian.
He faces a ban of up to 15 years.
British former world title contender Nigel Short said Nigalidze "should be stripped of his GM (Grandmaster) title and banned immediately".
He called for the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to tighten up rules, and questioned on Twitter whether it should introduce "mandatory two-year bans for computer cheats".
Two-time national champion Nigalidze was exposed when Petrosian grew suspicious about his frequent trips to the lavatory during Saturday's sixth-round match.
Tournament officials found Nigalidze had hidden a mobile phone in a cubicle, covered in toilet paper.
The Dubai Chess and Culture Club announced its decision to expel Nigalidze on Sunday morning.
It issued a statement on its Facebook page, along with a picture of Nigalidze's phone and an official game sheet of moves.
"When confronted, Nigalidze denied he owned the device," it said.
"But officials opened the smart phone and found it was logged into a social networking site under Nigalidze's account. They also found his game being analyzed in one of the chess applications."
Petrosian told the Daily Telegraph: "Nigalidze would promptly reply to my moves and then literally run to the toilet.
"I noticed that he would always visit the same toilet partition, which was strange, since two other partitions weren't occupied.
"I informed the chief arbiter about my growing suspicions and asked him to keep an eye on Gaioz.
"After my opponent left the very toilet partition yet another time, the arbiters entered it.
"What they found was the mobile phone with headphones; the device was hidden behind the pan and covered with toilet paper."
When questioned about the offence, Nigalidze said: "Not everything is true in what Petrosian said."
It is not the first time a player has been caught cheating at a chess tournament.
In July 2013, Bulgarian player Borislav Ivanov was suspended for four months after officials found most of his moves matched those of the top computer chess programs.
In 2008, at the Dubai Open, an Iranian player was banned after he was found receiving help via text messages.
Computers became powerful enough to outwit the world's top chess players nearly 20 years ago.
In 1997, Garry Kasparov became the first reigning world chess champion to be beaten by a computer under tournament conditions.
The 2015 Palau Blitz Chess Championship will fire off on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2015 at Bethlehem Park starting at 2:30pm. Out of 36 listed in the last issue of Chess Mate, only 20 have confirmed. 9th seed Paquito Suringa, Jr. can’t make it because he’s organizing a multiple sports competition at the same date of the event.
Remrel Dizon, James dela Cruz, Mohammad Manik Hossain, Leif Toribiong, Christopher Kitalong, Arnold Undecimo, Cris Ulap, Geoff Martin, Tuloy Rengiil, Glen Navarroza, Joey Balute, Roxanne Parco, Nelson Sablan, Tutii Joe Chilton and Morton Sawaichi can still make it if they will show up before the start of the first round.
Without the confirmation from these players, the possible first round matches are 1. Tito Cabunagan vs. Angelica Parrado 2. Cyril Montel, Jr. vs. Jeff Balbalosa 3. Roberto Hernandez vs. Baby Edna Mission 4. Bernardo Garcia vs. Destiny Sisior 5. Rafael Paloma vs. Manuel Mahor, Jr. 6. Rustum Cabuso vs. Gladys Paloma 7. Dennis Gonzales vs. Felix Oling 8. Eugene Labarda vs. Angelil Sisior 9. Nilo de Jesus vs. Robert Sola and 10. Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr. vs. Rey Sanchez.

Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3863: 1. Bxb5+! Axb5 2. Nc7+! Rxc7 3. Rd8 mate.

(919) THE 'EVOLUTION OF ROBERTO HERNANDEZ' BUSINESS CARD

The idea of making my own business card started when we took a Japanese language class conducted by Guest Relation Manager (GRM) Sunny Matsui. Everybody was given a black and white xerox copy of our business card mostly written in Japanese and written downwards. The biggest character in the middle is my name Ro baa-to Haa-nan-de-zu. Instead of ber, its longer pronunciation of baa-- and Her as Haa--.
The Katakana character at the right side is Parao Roiyaru Rezooto (Palau Royal Resort) and the 2nd from right characters are Resutoran (restaurant) (Uwei--vusu) Waves Pianisuto (Pianist). At the left are the Fax number and Tel. numbers.                                     (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

The notion to put the Breeze Bar logo earlier didn't materialize as it consumes a lot of space. It's better to put the Palau Royal Resort Nikko Hotels International instead.                    (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Putting "Waves" at the bottom right part is also not a good idea as the Japanese characters mentioned already the Waves (Restaurant) and Pianist. The photo is from the Awarding Ceremony of 2003 Senior and Junior Open Chess Tournament in Dec. 14, 2003.                     (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Roberto added a black and white xerox photo from his work permit ID at the top left of the card. The black and white logo of Palau Royal Resort Nikko Hotels International.

Seven years ago, I have given this card to a Japanese boy. The front side of this card is the horizontal one (above), and black and white xerox copy. The photo is also black and white taken from my work permit. The boy is amazed with it even it's black and white. His grandpa noticed that he sits on a lucky wooden chair and listening seriously while looking at the card many times.
When I played "Subaru", him and his grandpa sung with me. The grandma likes the scenario, took a photo and gave me $10.00 tip. The boy looked at the card more than a dozen times.    (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

This is also the same card that I have given to Paul 'Bear' Kenny of the Royal Australian Navy when I'm applying for Australian Visa in April 2009 to participate in the 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship. The other side of the card is the card below and black and white likewise. Paul instructed me to apply/send my documents through DHL to Pohnpei as there is no Australian Embassy in Palau. I paid $75.00 to DHL and another $75.00 (money order) for visa.

Roberto used a sharp scissor, and cut the Japanese Katakana characters meticulously to arrange those in vertical formation. The Palau Royal Resort's telephone number is still horizontal. A black and white photo from Chess Mate logo of 2004 was added at the left side.

This time, the tel. number, Reservation Hot Line and P. O Box 10108 was added at the right side.

Colored photo this time.

Before going to Australia for the 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, my ordered business cards from Taiwan is on the way (shipping). Pamela, the Purchasing Department Supervisor, just printed the layout of my business card on a blue papers and cut it like the size of regular business card. The back side is black and white with Japanese characters. I have given those cards to Gary Bekker, IA and Chief Arbiter of OZCC Charles Zworestine, Graeme Gardiner, Joselito Marcos, Fernando Aguilar, Jamie Kenmure, Ignatius Leong, Raymond Lapitan, Ric Ambatali, Arianne Caoili, Brian Jones, Hilton Bennett, Paul Spiller and many more.                                                                            (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

The business cards arrived after my trip to Australia but the email address had a dot instead of underscore. The email address then is robert_flor311@yahoo.com but it was hacked a few weeks later from Australian trip. I changed it to robert_flor31154@yahoo.com and informed all my friends about it. The hacker/s already sent a lot of solicitation letters even to my daughter Karen. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Aside from dot error, there is another error by the printer staff --adding .tw (taiwan) after com. There's no .tw in the draft order. They assumed that it will be used in Taiwan. Instead of writing an underscore on the dot symbol, I printed many robert_flor31154@yahoo.com and pasted it at the wrong printout.

The beginning of long and detailed information for chess and music. The Japanese Katakana characters were put at the bottom but the same size. Two email addresses were added as well as the Chairman of Knights & Rooks Chess Club (Palau), Secretary/Treasurer, Palau Chess Federation, Chess Columnist, Tia Belau Newspaper and President, Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale. I used this back side of authentic business card in representing Palau to the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. There's no more time to put my Russian name to the card on this side because we are in Manila already when we get our Russian visa and we are to fly to Dubai the next day.
THIS IS WHERE I GET MY RUSSIAN NAME -- FROM MY RUSSIAN VISA!

After coming back from Russia, I xerox my Russian name from the Russian visa and added it at the top of my name. There's no logo yet at the left or right side.           (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Added the Palau Royal Resort logo with Katakana Japanese characters. Removed the Palau Royal Resort Katakana characters at the bottom.

This time, better but smaller colored photo. Without the Katakana characters and PRR Logo.

Now with colored logo of both Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale)

and Palau Royal Resort. The Russian name is now under the American name and the Japanese characters "Roba--to Ha--nandezu  Resutoran (Uwei-vusu) Pianisto becomes smaller to accommodate the 2 logos. The dark blue background on the photo was changed to sky blue.   (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Here, the cell phone number 778-5392 was added in ordering 3 boxes of business cards from Taiwan. I printed smaller photos for the front pictures (original front of business card which is very strong and can't be torn with less force).                                          (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

The cell phone number in Philippines is included 09473835098 but the Japanese characters have covered some parts of the 4th Watch (Palau Locale) 2008-2010 because of lack of space. There are only about 40 pieces of this that circulate only in Philippines.                        (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

A lot has been added here: 1. Logo and address of Palau Chess Federation
                                                                              Member of FIDE 2005
                                                                              P. O. Box 1662
                                                                              Koror, Republic of Palau
                                                                                        96940
                                          2. Chess was added in the Private Tutor, Piano, Keyboard, Guitar
                                          3. PCF website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com was added
                                          4. Music was added also at Chess and Music Columnist because Roberto
writes about music also on Thursday starting in March 2012.
                                          5. The white background of the photo becomes dark blue.

    PALAU IN MENTIONED 13X IN
            HERNANDEZ' CARD

Maybe it’s the only one of its kind in this world.  Where can you find a business card where the country where the owner is living is mentioned 13 times?   ONLY IN PALAU!

Roberto A. Hernandez is provided with free 3 boxes of business cards in his every request at Palau Royal Resort. It’s only one-sided but Hernandez’ innovative idea, that started in 2008 during his Japanese language class, where the teacher, Ms. Sanny Matsui  has given each student a card bearing their names written in Japanese Katakana alphabet.

It is written downward as: ROBERTO HERNANDEZ

                                               Restaurant (Waves) Pianist

                                               Palau Royal Resort

                                               Tel. 680-488-2000          Fax: 680-488-6688
This is where the artistic creativity of Hernandez has started. He pasted on the right bottom vacant space the logo of Palau Royal Resort and his I.D. picture on the upper left part of the initial ‘business card’.

Not satisfied with it, he added another black and white on the back part of card (vertical this time) additional entries such as:                                    Logo        palau royal resort

                                                    nikko hotels international

                                 ROBERT HERNANDEZ

                                 Musician, Palau Royal Resort

Chairman, Knights and Rooks Chess Club (Palau)

                                Secretary/Treasurer, Palau Chess Federation

                                Chess Columnist, Tia Belau Newspaper

                                            robert_flor311@yahoo.com

Hernandez has given it once to a Taiwanese lady, where she said, “I can’t read Japanese. How will I know what are written here?” He showed her the back part and she said, “Oh, nice!”

The 2nd evolution of Hernandez’ card needs more patience. He used a sharp scissor to cut one by one every Japanese letter and arranged it vertically and added a black and white picture (photo copy) from an old Tia Belau Chess Mate column’s picture in 2004.

The middle is colored logo of PRR and some more information written horizontally on the right side as: Tel. +680-488-2000 Fax: +680-488-6688   Reservation Hot Line +680-488-8877   P. O. Box 1018 Koror, Palau 96940

That is the card that was given to Paul (Bear) Kenny of the Royal Australian Navy when he’s applying for Australian visa in 2009. And before going to Australia to represent Palau in the 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, Hernandez ordered a real business card of his own from then General Manager Isao Takahashi but it didn’t arrive in time for OZCC so Pamela Albania photocopied about 20 pages of this card in blue ordinary paper and now it’s arrange as this:     Logo        palau royal resort    nikko hotels international

Roberto A. Hernandez, Musician     Tel. +680-488-2000     Fax: +680-488-6688

       Reservation Hot Line: +680-488-8877     P. O. BOX 10108   Koror, Palau 96940

At the back of the blue card, Hernandez pasted the 2nd evolution card (in English). Those are the cards that he’d given away to new friends and chess players he met in Australia together with the brochures of PRR.

The 3rd evolution has started with the arrival of 200 cards. At the back of it, Hernandez combined the Japanese and English version with colored photo at the left upper part and the PRR logo at the right bottom part.

Then, the email address of Hernandez was hacked and he changed it with robert_flor31154@yahoo.com

He made many copies of it and pasted those on top of the old email address.

After coming back from Russia to represent Palau in the 2010 World Chess Olympiad, more additions occurs such as Russian name of Roberto, logo of PRR in Japanese, logo of Palau Chess Federation and logo of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ 4th Watch on the top part of the card.

Also added after Musician are Private Tutor, Piano, Keyboard, Guitar, Chess and President, Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ 4th Watch (Palau Locale) 2008-2010.

The Japanese characters were reduced in size to accommodate additional information and finally, the website of PCF http://palau-chess.blogspot.com  and email palau.chess@gmail.com were put under the Secretary/Treasurer, Palau Chess Federation part. Plus, the Chess and Music Columnist, Tia Belau Newspaper was added as Hernandez started writing about music since March 15, 2012.

So Palau is mentioned 10 times at the back part of the card and 3 times at the front and it has now 2 colored photos of Roberto in both sides.

Before the start of his games in Istanbul, Roberto will give his opponent this card, brochure of PRR and dugong key chain with Palau written on it. Other team members (Bernard, Menandro, Jamie and Elizabeth might do the same if they can get those items in time before going to Istanbul, Turkey 2012 World Chess Olympiad.

Roberto printed more than a hundred of this photo and pasted it on the colored prints of this back part of the business card. This is also the cards that he brought to 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey where one of those he has given these are former world chess champion Ruslan Ponomariov, all the women's team members of Philippines team, wife of GM Eugene Torre (Marylin), IM Oliver Dimakiling, GM Mark Paragua, GM Oliver Barbosa, etc...                      (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

This is the business cards (single side) that I have given to my 10 opponents in the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. Also to the Arbiters assigned at our table including the Palau pins and souvenir items from Palau. I have printed those in Philippines. I'm expecting that it can be printed two sides. With less time available, I settled for one side and do the both sides manually. That limited number I reserved for VIPs like Gary Kasparov when I asked him to sign his book. While looking at it, I mentioned to him that we talked on the phone of Congressman Pichay before coming to Norway. He remembered it.

In January 2014, I ordered 3 packs of business cards ( 100 pieces in each box) for my one year usage. The management said that they issue cards now for managers only. Ella, the Secretary of General Manager, told me to make my own.
Instead of 2 logos of Palau Royal Resort (one in regular and one in Japanese characters), I decided that since I am spending my own money for this card, I take out the one written in Japanese characters and make the logo of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale almost twice the size in the 'free' cards. The management spent about $5.00 for a box of 100 business cards. Giving away about 300 cards a year is a very cheap way to promote PRR even in Australia, Russia, Turkey, Philippines and Norway.
Now, the logo of PRR is very small. The PMCC logo is 10 times bigger now. I added my time schedule to it: playing music 4 hours from 7-11pm (Sat. - Thu.). No more fax number and Reservation Hot Line.
I retained the Katakana characters and put those under my photo.
The other side is this:

I added here the General Secretary instead of Secretary/Treasurer because we have elected Palau Chess Federation Treasurer in Dennis Gonzales. FIDE Instructor was also added even though I haven't have yet the ID because I topped the FIDE Trainers' Seminar conducted by FIDE C.E.O Geoffrey Borg in April 2014.
The P. O. Box 1662 was changed to P. O. Box 295 because the former is the P. O. Box of Eugenio  Pastrana and the P. O. Box 295 is Eric Ksau Whipps post office box number.
We paid 100 euros for that card while the 6 National Instructors (NI) paid 50 euros each aside from the same amount to 7 other Developmental Instructors (DI). We got our IDs at the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway (Aug. 01-14, 2014).

The Palau flag was moved to the left and the final Palau Chess Federation logo to the right. The Inc. after PCF was agreed to be removed in one of the last meeting of PCF Board so that it all conforms to the requirements of Attorney General's office before paying the arrears of PCF as a non-profit organization.

This is almost the complete list of info for the card. The gmail email address was removed as it is not being used often. Some additional info will be added like: President 2008-2010
                                                                             Vice President 2015
The http://www.palau-royal-resort.com will be deleted and will be replaced by the Chinese character of Palau Royal Resort.
