(1380) MUSIC AND ME (April 07, 2017) PLAYING PIANO 7 HOURS STRAIGHT!

BEVERLY HILLS DELI AT GREENBELT DRIVE
Before coming to Palau in Feb. 04, 1992, I used to play piano in this restaurant alternating with a colleague Francis Viologo. The place is within the perimeter of Greenbelt Shopping Complex where The Plaza Restaurant, The Plaza Cafe and Aristocrat Restaurant are located.

    PLAYING PIANO 7 HOURS STRAIGHT!

In 1984, The Plaza Restaurant, where I’ve worked as in-house artist/waiter/pianist for 15 years, has been relocated to the Greenbelt Area, same city of Makati. Its mother company, The Aristrocat, has been built up besides the building, just across the Greenbelt Shopping Center, while the Aling Asiang Specialty Restaurant was positioned in the center of The Plaza building facing the huge parking area where the Battle of the Bands was held a few years later.

I’ve resumed working at Plaza Café, the annexed restaurant of The Aristocrat, as waiter. This was a couple of years later after coming back from Japan for a 6-month performance with The First Quarter Band in Kagoshima City (Feb. 04-Sept. 28, 1982).
The twin pianists at Aling Asiang, Edwin and Edward, were alternating in playing at Aling Asiang using the very good Yamaha Baby Grand Piano. Then there are times when Edward is playing the upright piano at The Plaza Café. Edwin plays better than Edward that’s why he is playing now solely at Aling Asiang. I remember there is a customer who asked the Supervisor Eddie Faustino, why Edward plays that way, many times out of timing. One guy guest requested to him the song “Windmills of Your Mind” and he is lost in the middle of the song. I knew that song better than him.
A few months later, Edward didn’t play anymore at The Plaza Café while Edwin still plays at Aling Asiang. My wife Flor conceived our first child during this period while she is working at SM Shoemart in Cubao, Quezon City. I used to drop her at the bus stop in Buendia Avenue using the bicycle that was given to me by Masato and Kimiko Iwagawa in Japan. I’m using that bike also in going to work, which is just less than a kilometer away from our rented room.
During this time also that I’ve organized the first chess tournament among employees of The Plaza Café and Aristocrat Restaurant, where I am the provider of chess equipments, one mechanical chess clock and sponsor of the wooden chess trophies for the top 4 finishers in the shape of King for champion, Queen for 2nd place, Rook for 3rd place and Knight or Bishop for 4th place.
While working as waiter, I used to play the piano if I don’t have guests in my area of duty. I remember on Sunday lunch time that I’m serving the family of Filipino actress, Caridad Sanchez, and when they are finished with their meal, I started to play the upright piano. She likes my selection of songs and gave me 20.00 pesos tip!
The management gave me full time job now as pianist inside The Plaza Café and sometimes they will put the piano outside the terrace of both Plaza Café and Aristocrat if there is an occasion like what happened in the eve of Valentine’s Day 1984.
I will be playing from 5pm-12midnight on this romantic day for Filipinos. I ate my dinner at 4pm and will eat supper after 12midnight. The terrace and inside of Plaza Café are half full at 5pm. Most tables at set for couples. At 6pm, the place is full with many couples waiting at the door for tables to be vacated to get seated, as I continue to play without break. My usual routine in playing piano is—after a song, there is only about 5 seconds interval to start the next one.
At past 9pm, there are 2 ladies enjoying my music. One of them is flirting with me. When I played the song “Hello” by Lionel Richie, she is singing with the song and she emphasizes on the last 3 words of the song—“And let me start by saying “I Love You”.
As I am about to take a break at 10pm, the family of 5 who used to give me big tips arrive! I sat down again at the piano and finished my 7-hour playing without a break. As usual, I’ve got tips again from that family. My wife dropped by there from work with my friend Fernando Vergara at past 10pm.

(1088) MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 01, 2015) THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD OF JAPANESE/CHINESE BIRTH CONTROL IS...

I'VE GOT the "Most Effective Method -- Japanese Birth Control" idea when I am watching an electronic fair at The Plaza Restaurant where I worked for many years in late '70's and early '80's.

In the booth where they are selling typewriters, I tried the electric typewriter typing the Top 50 chess players of the world. I started with Robert James Fischer(2780), Anatoly Karpov (2700), Viktor Korchnoi (2670) Boris Spassky (2650), Tigran Petrosian (2640), Mikhail Tal (2635), Lev Polugaevsky (2630), Ljubomir Kavalek (2625), Henrique Mecking (2615), Efim Geller (2610), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2605), Vassily Smyslov (2600), Jan Smejkal (2600), Gennady Kuzmin (2600), Vlastimil Hort (2600), Ulf Andersson (2580)...

Then I heard somebody asking, "What number is Eugene Torre?" and I type No. 20 Eugene Torre. Although it's not yet that high, Torre reached that mark when he reached the Candidates Matches to determine the challenger to the world champion. 2580 was the highest that Eugene got, where very few have reached the 2600 mark.

Just next to that booth was the amazing and simple "Japanese" character that says "Most Effective Method -- Japanese Birth Control."

I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE ANSWER, THAT NO JAPANESE OR CHINESE CAN READ THOSE 'CHARACTERS'...

TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE IT, YOU MUST PRINT THE 'CHARACTERS' FIRST. THEN FOLD IT IN THE MIDDLE. FOLD IT AGAIN (1/4) AT RIGHT SIDE AND THEN YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT IF YOU WILL CONNECT THE 1/4 FOLDED 'CHARACTERS' TO THE FOLDED MIDDLE PART.

(124) "SOUNDLESS" PIANO (5th Issue-Music and Me)

ALWAYS NEW ON NEW YEAR'S EVE
Everywhere I go, there is always a new colleague when I perform on New Year's Eve countdown. In 1992, I am with Willie dela Cruz and Wilson Prima; in 1993, with Willia and a duo from Guam; 1994--in this photo with Mike Hernandez (not related to me) of Condition 4 Band of Guam; 1995 --with Marco Rejano and Herman Moral. All of those were performed at Image Restaurant. (Photo by Ma. Florida M. Hernandez)

                                'SOUNDLESS' PIANO

IN 1978-1979, while working as extra in-house artist/waiter at The Plaza Restaurant in Makati, Philippines, I enrolled at Yamaha School of Music. My parents can’t afford the expensive tuition fee so I’ve worked hard to get some extra income to sustain my study.

It’s been about 15 years ago since I read music notes. I have completely forgotten how to read notes. It’s not like learning to ride a bicycle or learning how to swim that once you’ve learned it, you’ll never forget it.

I can play already some songs on piano “by ear” only, not by notes. My teacher, Mrs. Rodriguez, don’t allow me to play by ear. The teaching then was very commercial. I have to wear a uniform and have to buy it there for a price. She sold me also a book where I have to practice my assignment at home. I’m using the upright piano of The Plaza Restaurant.

One day, the restaurant’s messenger Nemesio Montefar, saw me practicing and said,“You’re not supposed to play that.” The daughter of the owner of the restaurant saw me once playing it and didn’t say nothing because when I’m playing, it’s good to the ear already. I just need to improve and regain my knowledge in reading notes.

Nemesio locked the piano with its skeleton key. I can’t practice anymore. I thought of an idea – there is a square white table beside my locker room. I used a marker and a ruler to draw the piano keys on the table. I marked even the black ones for sharp and flat keys. IT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT EXPERIENCE A MUSICIAN/STUDENT CAN GET. The keys don’t produce a sound so you’ll never know if you’re out of tune. The keys don’t go down also. The feeling of playing a soundless piano is really terrible. My best friend Edgar saw me and said, “I think my friend is losing his mind”.

My idea is useless but the other is effective—I know that the piano’s skeleton key is just a straight piece of metal with one part sticking out before its far end. I’ve got one 2-inch small iron which is bended at the end. It’s the same size of a 3-inch common nail.

I tried it and voila! I was able to open it and resume my practice. Nemesio saw me again and said, “I’ve closed it already. How did you open it again?” I just keep quiet. He locked it again. When he’s not around, or day off, I opened it again and practice.

I don’t know why he’s doing it to me. Maybe he’s thinking, if I’ll become good in music, I’ll be better financially than him and he’ll stay a messenger all his life.

One day at lunch time, the other daughter of the owner noticed the very lonely atmosphere at Branding Iron (steak house of the restaurant) and there is a Yamaha baby grand piano there. She asked the Banquet Manager Teresita Reyes to look for a pianist and she recommended me.

My first two hours of performance was the most difficult. I know only more than 20 songs at that time. After one hour, I have played already all those songs. The early guests have left already so I played the same songs again to the late guests.

That is the longest 2 hours of my music career! Today, it will take more than a month to play all the songs from my repertoire—less than 2,000 international songs.

I have forgiven Nemesio for what he had done to me. Many co-employees of us thought that he will never find a wife because he’s too shy. My wife and I introduced him to our lady neighbor and now they have 2 kids, and living an ordinary and peaceful life.
