(1020) ORTIZ QUITS, BONG'S IN, KAREN & ANN NEED A DRAW (TBN-July 25, 2011)

REPLACING JENALYN ORTIZ
Ferdinand 'Bong' Gutierrez, left, uses a different kind of strategy in joining the ongoing 2011 Palau National Chess Championship. "Know your opponent" seems to be his tactic for this year's PNCC. Roberto Hernandez, middle, plays against Elizalde Madrinan in a special game held on Tuesday, July 19 at PRR Dorm 1.

JENALYN ORTIZ, the 4th woman player to participate in the ongoing 2011 Palau National Chess Championship has withdrawn her participation to pave the way for Ferdinand 'Bong' Gutierrez to fill-in the vacant slot. Bong was offered a slot 3 weeks ago before the opening day but he politely declined.

Upon seeing the contestants' styles of play in the opening games of the tourney, he was able to size-up the strength of the field and decided to join if there is an opening.

Ortiz has not played a single game yet and when asked if she wishes to continue, Karen Lee confirmed her withdrawal.

After talking to Ann Acebron and Lee, they agreed to play on Saturday at 2:00 pm. They need to have at least a draw to have all the unrated players gain their first international ranking.

Roberto Hernandez set up 4 chess boards and pieces, clocks, score sheets and pens anticipating another busy afternoon but it didn't happen again.

Mohammad Manik Hossain showed up at 12:00 to play at least one game before going back to work in Airai at 3:00 pm. It was decided that if Acebron and Lee come at 2:00, he will play one game against anyone of the two in 15-minute time control so that he can still make it at 3:00.
A match with Elizalde Madrinan was set on Monday (Eli's day off) instead.

Angie Parrado came at 3:30 and she played an official game against top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and lost in 24 moves of Caro-Khan Defence. She played another game against Rudel Roxas and suffered the same fate in a marathon 74 moves of Irregular Opening.

Elizalde Madrinan played his first game on Tuesday against 3rd seed Hernandez. It was an exciting match that the small crowd had enjoyed watching with Hernandez prevailing in 60 moves of Sicilian Defence. Eli missed some strong moves that should have altered the outcome of the game.

Jeff Balbalosa has uploaded some pictures of 2011 PICC from his digital camera at Facebook. Hernandez downloaded those pictures including the record of his participation in the 2010-2011 Palau National Chess Championship.

It's a great discovery of Jeff that it satisfied Hernandez' curiosity of what happened to the ratings of 8 other players who played in that event. Although they didn't get their international rating because of shortness of FIDE rated player (at least one third), their names and statistics, games played, their opponents and acquiring FIDE I. D. number is more than good enough as the ratings itself.

The following is the FIDE I. D. Number of the 15 participants of the said event: 1. Menandro Manuel 16600029  2. Jerry Sermeno  16600142  3. Roberto Hernandez  1660010  4. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. 16600037  5. Dennis Gonzales 16600152  6. Tito Cabunagan 16600169   7. Gonzalo Escapatoria  16600177   8. Mohammad Manik Hossain 16600185  9. Ferdinand Gutierrez  16600192  10. Jeffrey Negrillo  16600207  11. Angie Parrado  16600215   12. Elizalde Madrinan 16600223   13. Manuel Mahor, Jr. 16600100   14. Andres Mestizo II  16600231  15. Jeff Balbalosa  16600240.

(1016) CHESS ON MONDAY, MUSIC ON THURSDAY (TBN- March 12, 2012)

UPSET IN THE MAKING
Jeffrey Negrillo, right, snapped the 12-game winning streak of Roberto Hernandez, left, in the last few rounds of 3rd Pax Cup. Jonathan Sta. Ana, of PRR's Purchasing Department, watches the first few moves of the game.            (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

CHESS ON MONDAY, MUSIC ON THURSDAY

TIA BELAU News will be published twice a week starting on the 2nd week of this month. Chess columnist Roberto Hernandez will contribute also on Thursday, this time about music.

In the resumption of 3rd Pax Cup Rapid Chess Tournament at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1, Jeffrey Negrillo snapped the 12-game winning streak of Roberto Hernandez by giving him a dose of his own medicine—against his pet Danish Gambit.

Jeff refused the gambit pawn on the very 2nd move and brought out his queen early in the game. He pinned the knight of Hernandez that’s defending the e pawn.

Negrillo has created a weakness on Hernandez’ queen side.  He forced the exchange of his dark-colored bishop for a knight. Hernandez was obligated to capture with a pawn to avoid losing his e pawn with check. That double pawns on c file become the target as weakness that proved to be the deciding factor of the game.

In the endgame, Jeff is ahead by 3 pawns and didn’t bite to Hernandez’ last-ditch attempt to salvage at least a draw with the bishop of opposite color endgame.

With that victory, Jeff almost clinched a spot to the semifinals that include Hernandez and Paquito, who has 4 more remaining games. The last and final slot is still being contested by Ronnie Capio, who played all his remaining games already, Ferdinand Gutierrez and Rudel Roxas. If Roxas and Gutierrez will win their last 2 games, they will tie Jeff at 10 points apiece. It will eliminate Capio, who only had 8.5 points. Rey Alenain and Joel Gabris still have an outside chance to make it depending on the results of the remaining games of Jeff, Rudel and Ferdinand.

Other results of last week’s games: Jeff swept Mar Joel Gabris and extracted 1 point from Dan Roldan; Gutierrez kept his hopes alive for a semifinal berth by sweeping Jeffrey this time.

                Standings of players and their win-loss-draw record:  1. Roberto Hernandez (12-1-0) 2. Jeffrey Negrillo (10-4-0) 3. Paquito Suringa, Jr. (9-4-1) 4. Ronnie Capio (8-9-1) 5. Ferdinand Gutierrez (8-6-0) 6. Rey Alenain (7-9-0) 7. Rudel Roxas (6-8-0) 8. Mar Joel Gabris (3-7-0) 9. Dan Roldan (2-13-0) 10. Miguel Gancayco (0-4-0).

Ernesto Domingo, a stranger yet to Hernandez, has called Hernandez on his cell phone (778-5392) and set up a visit/practice with available players on Sunday, March 11 at 11:00 am at Dormitory 1.

Hernandez also invited Rick Miskiv for practice/socializing, who later declined the invitation citing it is peak season now and he very busy.

(1015) JEFF WON 4, LOST 2; RONNIE IS 8-7-1

JEFF ON THE MOVE
Jeffrey Negrillo, right, finally played in the 3rd Pax Cup by winning 4 straight before bowing twice to Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr., 2nd from right. Roberto Hernandez, who won 12 straight, shakes hands with Pax before the start of their game. Ronel Gutierrez, 2nd from left, withdrew from the tourney due to schedule conflict.

JEFF WON 4, LOST 2, RONNIE IS 8-7-1

AS WRITTEN in the last issue of Chessmate, Jeffrey Negrillo, Edwin Acuyan and Ferdie Altea are the 3 remaining players who have yet to play a game in the 3rd Paquito Suringa Cup Rapid Chess Tournament being held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1. This tournament is exclusively for PRR employees only and to give equal chances to less experienced participants, top seeds Roberto Hernandez and Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. are required to play 2-4 players at the same time.

Pax has yet to play against 2 or more players but Hernandez played 2 at the same time last month, against Ronnie Capio and Dan Roldan and against Joel Gabris, Ferdinand Gutierrez, Miguel Gancayco and Rey Alenain last week. Hernandez played one-on-one against Pax and against Rudel Roxas as there is no one available for at least 2-player being played against simultaneously.

Finally, Jeffrey Negrillo played his first games of the event scoring a perfect 4 out of 4. He swept Capio, nipped Roxas, and then clobbered Gabris in succession. His 4-game winning streak was snapped when he was swept this time by birthday celebrant Pax on Friday, March 02, 2012.

Meanwhile, Joel scored his 2nd and 3rd points at the expense of Dan Roldan when he swept the latter the other day. Jeff bounced back from defeat and swept Rey Alenain to have a respectable 6-2-0 win-loss-draw slate. Capio is making his move to make it to the semifinal with another sweeps of Joel and Dan to trail Hernandez and Pax at the forefront with an 8-7-1 card.

The top 4 finishers of this event will play in the semifinals with the No. 1 to play No. 4 and No. 2 to play No. 3 in maybe best of 3 series. The registration fee is $5.00 which will be the prize for the top 2 finishers.

The Palau Chess Federation, Knights and Rooks Chess Club (Palau) and King Royal Chess Club of PRR welcomes a new addition to the club/federation—Mr. Rick Miskiv, a dive instructor at Fish N’ Fins. He’s a friend of Blaire and he loves chess and is interested in playing or visiting the chess clubs for practice and meeting new people. He can’t participate in the ongoing event at PRR but he can visit the Dorm 1 and practice with available or day off chess players.

He was offered by Hernandez the slot of team captain for Palau Women’s Team to 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey but he politely declined the offer citing he don’t have experience yet being team captain or do tournaments.  He’s looking for a more casual chess club experience to find other people who like chess, to learn skills and to meet new people.

Hernandez also suggested to him to check the Palau Chess Federation website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com to learn more about chess in Palau. The website is becoming popular especially to Europeans since its inception in Dec. 26, 2011 with the help of Papua New Guinea’s Joselito Marcos, Hernandez’ best friend. As of March 03, 2012 at 4:22 pm (Palau time), the site have 2,109 page views and 63 posts mostly by Hernandez. The latest post is by Joselito entitled “March 2012 International Ratings of Palau Chess Players”. Hundreds of Chessmate articles have yet to be posted by Hernandez in the future. He accidentally created another website “Palau Chessmate” where he is posting the first issues of Chess Mate by Robert Hernandez in Tia Belau since Dec. 29, 2002. Currently it has 76 page views and 34 posts.
***As of April 02, 2015 (10:00am Palau Time), there are 138,386 page views, 965 posts and more than 89 countries who viewed this website (Palau Chess).
With exactly 50 lesser posts, Palau Chessmate has 915 posts currently.

(1002) EDWIN ACUYAN'S FIRST GAME (TBN-Sept. 05, 2011)

LAST GAME FOR OUTSIDERS AT PRR DORM
Bernard Garcia, left, lost 3 games on the last day that outsiders are allowed to play at PRR Dorm 1. Angie Parrado, right, scored her 2nd victory over Bernard. Roberto Hernandez, 2nd from left, and Paquito Suringa, Jr. watched the exciting game sporadically.

EDWIN ACUYAN'S FIRST GAME

FINALLY, EDWIN Acuyan played his first game of the 2011 Palau National Chess Championship against 3rd seed and co-employee Roberto Hernandez on Tuesday, Aug. 30 after taking their lunch. Acuyan, the new Food and Beverage Manager of Palau Royal Resort is off on that day but they used the rapid time control of 30 minutes for each player to finish the game.

Hernandez was able to annotate their game, a Sicilian Defence encounter. A doubtful 2nd move of f6 created a weakness to Acuyan’s king side that Hernandez exploited to win a pawn and a bishop early in the game. After winning another knight and exchanging their queens, Hernandez won the exchange (a bishop for a rook) and is ready to checkmate Acuyan on the 30th move when the latter resign.

August 28 was the last Sunday that outsiders are allowed to play at PRR Dorm 1 lounge. Tito Cabunagan and Jose Celiz arrived at 2:00 pm. Angie Parrado don’t have a ride and she requested Bernard Garcia to pick her up so that they can play their game. Bernard had a bad day as he lost to Jose and to Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria, Jr.

Tito and Jose proceeded to Beken’s Store to play against Gene Pastrana but the other venue host refused to play against them. Jeff Balbalosa also came at PRR and watched the last game of the day between Bernard and Angie. He’s shaking his head when Angie missed some winning lines. In spite that she was unable to find the quickest way to win, Angie still extracted a whole point over Bernard for her second win of the event.

Hernandez suggested a match between Rudel Roxas and Escapatoria, Jr. but the former was invited for a swim by friends and he just gave away the victory to Jojo, who picked up his 4th win against 5 losses.

To speed up the current tournament, Hernandez will suggest the following: Games will be set at Beken’s Store. If on agreed date and time, a player didn’t show up, he will lose automatically. If he showed up and Gene can’t play for whatever reason, their game will be declared a draw.

Elpidio Manaligod doesn’t have to play a single game if his current job schedule is too tight for him to play even in the rapid time control. All he has to do is show up in a specified date and time and agreed to draw with that unrated player. Against FIDE rated players, he will lose to them if he can’t play even in the rapid time control.

Tito suggested that players who played less than 5 games lose all their remaining games. That’s when there’s still 27 days left before the 2011 PNCC concludes. Surely, Gene will not agree to this as it will plummet his ranking to the cellar. That’s why the above-mentioned suggestion of Hernandez will somehow ease the burdens from Gene and many other players like Dennis Gonzales, Mohammad Manik Hossain, Jeffrey Negrillo and Ferdinand ‘Bong’ Gutierrez.

That Sunday at Beken’s Store, when Gene refused to play against Tito and Jose, they should have just declare it a draw.

Current standings of 2011 PNCC (The players, their win-loss-draw record and points):
1. Menandro ‘Boy’ Manuel (9-2-2) 10 pts.
2. Tito Cabunagan (8-1-2) 9 pts.
3. Roberto Hernandez (9-3-0) 9 pts.
4. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (6-1-2) 7 pts.
