(1491) 32 PHOTOS OF COME-BACKING MORTON SAWAICHI (5 TOURNAMENTS FROM 2004-2005)

This was the first tournament that Morton Sawaichi, left, has participated, the 2004 Open Chess Tournament sponsored by Filco Thrift Mart in Malakal operated by Nestor Canaria, the father of Den Canaria, 3rd from left, who is also a first time participant as well as Joel Azana, right.

The banner "2004 OPEN CHESS TOURNAMENT EVERY SUNDAY @ FILCO THRIFT MART 1:00-5:00 PM --START OCT. 11" was made by me during me and my wife Flor vacation in Philippines. I bought a small red and dark blue paint and used an old Bud Light banner. When I put it at Filco Thrift Mart, I let it stay there for a week till the next round. The "TOURNAMENT" letters were deteriorating because of heat so I used a whole part of a blue duct tape to make it looked like a machine-printed letters. Morton, right, is playing vs. Joel while Eddie Grefiel, the eventual champion, is playing the 2004 Non-Master champ Jess Toldoya, with the host/trophies sponsor of that tilt Lin de Guzman, 2nd from left, watching their game.      (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., middle, shakes hand with Mariano Agustin, Jr. before their game with Morton waiting for his opponent. Cyril struggled in this tourney but made it to the Class A division.

Bong Alipoon, right, lives just right across the venue, showing sporting gesture before the start of his game vs. Roberto Hernandez. Later that year, the place hosted the next tournament with Bong staying some late nights with players to practice and socialize.

The 2004 Rapid Chess Tournament is the best start ever by Morton, winning his first 2 games.

Morton vs. Ivan II Chess Computer.

Gene Pastrana vs. Morton Sawaichi. Gene lives also just across the road and hosted the 2005-2006 Rapid chess tilt.

Morton vs. 62-year-old Mariano Agustin, Jr. while eventual champion Eddie Grefiel looks on. When we play our game, Eddie writes the moves also saying, "It's unfair if you are the only writing the moves so I'll write our moves, too." A very good sporting gesture from a real gentleman. Many players took advantage of my "do all things" to extract a full point from me as I am not focus entirely to my games by being the chief arbiter, setting of all equipment, writing chess notations when the tournament time control is at least 30 minutes, getting the results of all games, deciding quickly when there are complaints, taking photos for future references, etc. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

2005 Regular Chess tournament at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar which was later moved to Privilege Store in Malakal as the new venue which is good for Morton, who is playing against Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. here as next to the store is the bar where Morton works as bouncer.

First timer Ronald Maomay vs. the talking and taunting Ivan II chess computer while Morton is in deep thought against Gene Pastrana. The poster "Knights and Rooks Chess Club" has the names of all the players embedded since June 09, 2002,

Morton vs. youngster Em-R de Vera in the late afternoon match.

Morton vs. compatriot Tutii Joe Chilton in a game that won Morton $50.00 as Brilliancy game wherein he donated $20.00 for Palau Chess Federation to be able to pay its yearly membership fee to FIDE of 600 Swiss francs (or $480.00).

Morton vs. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. while Jess Toldoya is watching. The games were played at the parking lot of Jean's Boutique and Store operated by Gene Pastrana, which later become the venue host of succeeding Palau tournaments.

(1191) PAX, THE NEMESIS OF CYRIL; AZERBAIJAN VISAS TO BE ISSUED UPON ARRIVAL (TBN-April 0, 2016)

FOR THE 3RD TIME IN A ROW
Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr., left, meets top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., right, for the 3rd time in more than a year, with the same results as the previous two –an upset win. Pax will be Board 1 player of Team Palau in the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan if 4th qualifier Allan Alcid will not make it. The Olympiad will be held in Sept. 01-14, 2016.    (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

        PAX, THE NEMESIS OF CYRIL;
   AZERBAIJAN VISAS TO BE ISSUED
                    UPON ARRIVAL

JOEL Azana is the nemesis of Roberto Hernandez in 2004-2005 while Bong Alipoon is the nemesis of 3-time Palau chess champion Eddie Grefiel. In the year 2015-2016, top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.’s nemesis this time is Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. of Palau Royal Resort.

In August 16, 2015, Pax dealt Cyril his first defeat in the penultimate round of 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship to make the final day an exciting one. Cyril eventually won the championship for his 3rd straight national title.

In Nov. 28, 2015, Pax and Cyril played their 6th round match at PRR Dormitory 1 at 6pm. The ‘home court’ advantage sided with Pax as he defeated Cyril again in 33 moves of Nimzo-Indian Defence (Leningrad Variation). After their game, Cyril stayed till 12:30am and played blitz chess with Roberto, Pax and Felix Oling, Jr. with the overall results favoring the PRR top chess players.
And in the opening day of 2016 Palau Rapid Chess Championship, Pax defeated Cyril again in the 2nd round with overwhelming advantage that even if his promoted pawn reach its last square and it stays as a pawn because Pax didn’t get the extra queen on the table to promote the pawn, he still won as he promoted the other pawn with Cyril not able to salvage a draw by stalemate.
Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr. is the 1st round opponent of Roberto while Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor, Jr. is Pax 1st round opponent. Both didn’t show up and Roberto and Pax both won by default. In the 2nd round of the same day, March 27, Roberto lost to Tito Cabunagan in a marathon 83 moves of Sicilian Defence.

On Sunday, April 3rd, Pax will meet fellow undefeated Tito in the 3rd round while Roberto will face the tough and much improved Jeff Balbalosa. The 2016 PRCC contestants are all male (12 of them) without a single entrée from junior and women players. The very convenient venue now is the campaign headquarters of Surangel Whipps, Jr., who is running for President of Palau in the Nov. national election. The place is now air conditioned with coffee, water and crackers as provided snack.
Roberto received an email from the 2016 Baku Olympiad Operating Committee that says:
“Dear Chess Federations, Dear Chess Friends,
The Baku Olympiad Operating Committee is currently working on the preparation for the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku. We are willing to offer to the Olympiad participants not only the best conditions of chess games, but also those of accommodation, transport, registration and preparation to the event.
In that direction, the Operating Committee has taken some measures to allow all the Olympiad participants to get their visas for Azerbaijan directly at the Baku Airport, without having to go to the Azerbaijani Embassies over the world. This measure will be the subject to a presidential decree, which we are currently waiting for. As the decree has to be included into the Official Invitation for the Olympiad, the sending of the latter will be delayed: The Federations will receive it on April 15th, with the complete information regarding the event. On this day, the registration to the Olympiad will start as well and will be open till June 30th.
We hope that the Federations understand the reasons for this delay, necessary for the participants comfort. The Operating Committee is at the Federations’ disposal for any questions related to the Invitation or Registration to the Olympiad.
We hope to see you all at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku for an unforgettable event.
With best regards,  Baku Chess Olympiad Operating Committee.”
