NEW RATINGS OF PALAU TOP 26
              CHESS PLAYERS

2017 PNCC champ Bobot Tan overtook me as the No. 2 chess player of Palau in the Jan. edition of FIDE ratings of top 26 players of Palau. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. will keep his No. 1 hold at the top for 5 consecutive years (2014-2018) with an additional 14 rating points from his previous 1868 to 1882.

Tan, who didn’t get a rating in the Qualifying tilt because he hadn’t play 5 rated players, got a very impressive 1823 initial standard rating for his superb performance in the Qualifying and Top 12 Division of 2017 PNCC. My teammate in the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan Allan Alcid is still listed 3rd at 1792 but being inactive for a year, he will not be in the list in the Feb. edition of FIDE rating list which will be acquired by Angelo Salvadora, who gained an astounding 80 rating points to catapult him at 3rd with 1772 from his previous 1692.

Rustum Cabuso likewise did an exemplary performance and added 68 points to his 1662 old rating to the 4th spot due to his current 1730 rating. Tito Cabunagan added 21 rating points (from 1703-1724) to keep the 5th slot where he is tied with Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr., who gained 11 points to keep his No. 6th spot intact in spite of losing his first 2 games to Dennis Gonzales and me.

I lost 43 rating points and dropped to 7th place (from 1751-1708) while No. 4 Jeff Balbalosa is now at 8th place after losing 52 points (1746-1694). Gonzales stayed at No. 9 with an increase of 8 points from his 1617-1625 while Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria, Jr. kept the 10th position despite losing 24 points.

Palau’s first Woman National Master (WNM) Angelica Parrado-Sisior gained 28 points (1531-1559) to maintain her hold of 11th spot. Neph Macasaet got a surprising 53 points for his better than average performance in the less strong opposition at Reserves Division to overtake Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor, Jr. at 12th spot from his old 1502-1555. Nilo de Jesus is No. 13 with 1545 while Mahor, in spite of getting 14 points, downgraded at 14th (1519-1533).

The undefeated Junior Division champion Angelil Sisior collected 27 points to dislodge her younger sister Destiny at 15th place with her 1449-1476 resurgence. Destiny is now at 17th after losing 59 points (1491-1432) despite finishing 3rd in their division.

The most points gained in this month’s rating is by Wilson Barrameda, whose 146 increase put him in 18th place from his 1258-1404 current rating and got him a gold medal in Reserves Division followed by bronze medalist 19th placer Joel Gemota, whose got 1396 standard rating. His previous Blitz rating is 1327.  At 20th is Gladys Anne Paloma with 1361.

Joan Gemota lost the most point (105) to slid from 17th-21st (1451-1346). Palau Open team qualifier Leif Toribiong lost 88 points as he didn’t score any point in the very competitive Top 12 Division. His 1411 rating dropped to 1323 and only good for 22nd place just behind him is the 1295 rating of Joy Flores Whipps.

Jennifer Angeles improved her 1149 rating to 1187 for a gain of 38 points for 24th spot followed by the youngest rated Palau player Kyarii Sisior, who collected 32 points and improved from 1115-1147 for 25th spot. Lastly, the reserve player of the Palau Women’s Team to 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia Angelica Magno, generated 54 points to start the New Year on a positive note.
