(1450) BOBOT KEEPS LEAD; TITO, PAX WITH 4-2 SLATE (TBN-Nov. 20, 2017)

US RETIRED AIR FORCE OFFICER JEFF APPRECIATES MY CHESS AND MUSIC EXPLOITS
                  Rarely do I meet anybody who appreciates my chess and music exploits as Jeff did on Monday, Nov. 13 at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. I told him the story of a lone Japanese guy that gave me $200.00 tip http://palau-chess.blogspot.com/2012/01/music-experience-of-roberto-hernandez.html  And about the Japanese lady http://palau-chess.blogspot.com/2012/11/music-and-me-nov-29-tennesse-waltz.html   Jeff gave me $100.00 tip that night.

                 BOBOT KEEPS LEAD;
            TITO, PAX WITH 4-2 SLATE
NEWCOMER Bobot Tan keeps the lead in the resumption of play of the 6th round of 2017 Palau National Chess Championship at Ernguul Park on Sun. Nov. 12 by defeating Rustum Cabuso in 51 moves of Semi-Slav Defense while I won over Manuel ‘Jun ‘ Mahor, Jr. in 44 moves of Bird’s Opening.

            Top seed and defending champion Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. nips Leif Toribiong and Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. scored another victory over Angelo Salvadora. Rustum, Pax and Angelo are sporting an identical 3 wins 2 losses card and each one having 1 postponed game.

                The postponed game of Pax and Rustum was played at 10:30pm on Thu. Nov. 17 with Pax prevailing in 33 moves of Queen’s Fianchetto Defense and thus keeping close with Bobot.

THE MOVES:

Tito Cabunagan likewise had a 4-2 record after dealing Jeff Balbalosa his 4th straight loss in their 9th round game. Tito will be having a 1-week vacation and he requested to me that he will play Leif in the 7th round instead of their 8th round match. But there is complication with that request—Leif is scheduled to play Jun, who had only a point after 6 games and needed badly a victory to boost his morale. If Tito will play vs. Leif, I can’t play vs. Jun because we already played in the 5th round as shown above. It will cause a major problem with players trying to catch up esp. Dennis Gonzales, who is 2 games behind schedule as well as Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria, Jr., who is still on funeral leave. Cyril, too, is 2 games behind vs. Tito and Dennis. Angelo had 1 game postponed vs. Dennis.

I informed Tito about this scenario and he agreed to play vs. me and he will talk to Leif about their 8th round match to reschedule it at latter date. Other 7th round games will feature Angelo vs. Rustum; Jojo vs. Pax; Cyril vs. Jeff (to be rescheduled also) and Bobot vs. Dennis.

As per Jamie Kenmure instruction, the Women’s Division is now double round-robin with WNM Angie Parrado clobbering Jennifer Angeles and defending champ Baby Edna Mission subduing my guitar/chess student Angelica Magno.

                  In the exciting junior division, Angelil Sisior won 3 games over her 2 younger sisters Destiny Sisior and Kyarii and over Gian Gabriel Claronino and stays unbeaten with a perfect 8-0 card. Her last opponent is my piano/chess student who won his replayed game vs. Rommel Gulla but lost to Aome Angeles, who won his first point.

                 Reece Reklai beat Kyarii to keep abreast with Angelil. His slim chance for the junior championship is if Angelil would lose to him and he would win his last 3 games vs. Michael Gulla, Nick and Rommel. But Angelil has beaten him to be ahead in tiebreak of Direct Encounter or winner over the other.

                 Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3793: 1. Bxg7+! Kxg7 2. Qg5+ Kh8 3. Qf6#

                   This week’s puzzle No. 3794: White to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
