(1335) MUSIC AND ME (Dec. 01, 2016) THE 'TAN TAN' TAIWANESE BOY

ANOTHER MUSICAL GENIUS TAIWANESE KID
The Taiwanese boy in the middle shows a sign of being a musical genius when he hums the Taiwanese song "Lan Hua Cao" or "Orchid" in English while I'm playing it on July 22, 2016 at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort. He is in the right key or tone but sings it by singing it using only "tan tan" lyrics.  (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

   THE 'TAN TAN' TAIWANESE BOY

AS I am on my first few songs of playing instrumental piano music on July 22, 2016 at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, a Taiwanese boy, about 3 years old, sits/stands at the right side of the piano.

He seems to be like an ordinary boy but when I play the Taiwanese song "Orchid" or "Lan Hua Cao", he hums it loudly using the words "tan tan" only.

Other Taiwanese kids and adults are amazed by the boy. Some of the kids (boys and girls) come close to the piano and some sing-along with him using also the "tan tan" lyrics.

That boy wasn't born yet when that song was written and yet, he knows the melody/pitch of the song.

                Chess and Music (Perfect Combination)
The Beginning of Chess in Palau
                By Roberto Hernandez
Soon to be published as a book

But the girl in my 943rd post here is better...

FIRST TIME TO MEET A VERY YOUNG MUSIC GENIUS
In 2005, I've met a perfectionist girl (Jasmine Yano). On Feb. 24, 2015, I've met a music genius 5-year-old Taiwanese girl, whom I don't even know her name. She amazes me with her knowledge of old Taiwanese songs (1960's-1970's). I will not let go this chance to have a photo with her. If trained properly, she will be a musical icon.                                                (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

     THIS 5-YEAR-OLD TAIWANESE GIRL
              IS A MUSIC GENIUS

On February 24, 2015, as I was playing piano at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort, a young 5-year-old Taiwanese girl is watching me play and take a very curious look at the way I step on 2 damper pedals of the piano.

After finishing the song that I'm playing then, I followed it up with the most popular Taiwanese song "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin" which I know, that even kids of her age know it.

To my surprise, she is not much familiar with it even I am singing it. But when I play "Ye Lai Xiang", she is singing with it -- and in the right key or tone.

I played all Taiwanese songs since then and she can sing or hum it if she don't know the lyrics and always in the right key or tone like "Grandma's Penghu Bay", "Heart of the Bloom", Nu Ren Hua, Lan Hua Cao, Cicadas of Autumn and Tian Mi Mi. Those songs are as old as 1960's and 1970's.

I gave her my card and she showed it to her father. When he sits beside her, I played the "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin" again and he helps her sing with it.

I resume playing all-Taiwanese songs again and she still can sing or hum with it. I REALIZED THEN THAT THIS GIRL IS A MUSIC/SINGING GENIUS!

I don't like to let this chance go without having a photo with her so I ask Pam, Restaurant Supervisor, to take these photos.

Later, I asked Executive Chef Daisuke Kunii to have also photos with the girl so that I can feature her in Tia Belau Newspaper someday even if it's a Chess Mate article like what I did to Uehara family in July 2014 before going to 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway.

UEHARA FAMILY -- SEE YOU AGAIN AT PRR BEFORE GOING TO NORWAY

The Uehara family came to Palau Royal Resort again on March 29, 2014. They have this photo with new Executive Chef Daisuke Kunii. Roberto asked them to come back to Palau again in July, before leaving for Norway for the 2014 World Chess Olympiad. The Uehara family comes to Palau at least 4 times a year. They missed the New Year’s Eve Countdown because PRR was fully booked at that time.   (Photo by Roberto Hernandez- Taken by Edwin Acuyan)

           EFFECTIVE OCT. 15, 2015
      PALAU RETIREMENT AGE IS
                       62 YEARS

ON JUNE 10, 2014, Roberto Hernandez went to the Social Security Administration office to check his INDIVIDUAL WAGE HISTORY With Taxes Paid.
He was informed that the retirement age will be 62 years effective Oct. 15, 2015. HE WILL MISS IT BY 2 AND A HALF MONTHS!
He will be 60 years old on Jan. 02, 2016. He has to wait for another 2 years and 2 months to get his pension in 2018.
The bold figures indicate that his former employer for 13 years, Margarita Borja Dalton, didn't post Social Security payments from 1998-2003 (6 years).
Those 6 years of unpaid dues will really affect his future pension. The Administrator is in a very important meeting at that time so he was not able to talk to him.
Eight days later, he was able to talk to the Administrator, Mr. John Markub, who also said that the non-payment of Margie will really affect his pension and that he talked to her already about it and they agreed that Margie will try her best to settle the non-posted wages even by installment.
Thirty eight (38) total quarters must be posted to be eligible for Social Security pension. Roberto got 56, not including the 23 that Margie hadn't posted.
Roberto got 2 quarters from Elena Sings, his first employer in Palau from Feb. 04-July 26, 1992. After that, he worked for 13 years to Margarita Borja Dalton under Micronesian Business Design dba Image Restaurant and got 22 quarters from 1992-1997.
He’s got 2 quarters from Teppan Dragon Japanese Restaurant in 2006 and another 3 quarters at Donburi Dragon in 2006-2007.
And finally, he’s got 28 quarters from JAL HOTELS CO., LTD-PALAU (Palau Royal Resort) from June 01, 2007-Present.
The 9 members of Palau Chess Team to 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway had a meeting at Bethlehem Park on June 16 at 5:30 pm.
They agreed to apply by group in acquiring Schengen visa because it’s more convenient. They will leave on July 15 and will go to the Royal Norwegian Embassy on July 17 for interview and finger printing. They will buy also travel insurance along the perimeter of the embassy. It must cover at least 30,000 euros and the cost is about $150.00.
Cyril’s wife and 2 kids had gone already for vacation in June 13 while Gladys left on June 17, a day after the meeting. The renting of hotel/rooms was cancelled and all members will stay in Manila for at least a couple of days.
Cyril will stay with Roberto for 2 days before they proceed to their respective provinces. Bernard is having second thoughts and might apply individually. He and Roberto got their Verification of Deposit Notice, one of the requirements in getting Schengen visa on Thursday, June 19.
Solution to last week’s puzzle: 1. …Qf1+!! 2. Rxf1 Rxf1+ 3. Kg2 Nxe3 mate.

THIS POST HAD ONE INTERESTING COMMENT ABOUT SOMEONE LOOKING FOR MY EMPLOYER OF 13 YEARS --- MARGARITA BORJA DALTON....

Hi, I was searching for an email address to contact you in private but I cannot find one anywhere on your website. I was hoping that you could help me find someone. My name is Johnny Woods. My mother passed away four years ago and her best friend was Margie Dalton. I have been searching in vain for a way to contact her. I grew up knowing her as my "Aunt Margie". I recently did a search on Google and that is what led me to your site. The picture you have listed of her is just as I remember her the last time she visited my mother in Florida before she passed. If you have any information on how I can contact her I would greatly appreciate it. You can email me at any time at pncldrwng@aol.com or at wjohn40@ymail.com . Thank you very much for your time, Johnny Woods

Chef Kunii gave her his card also.

The guy at the back is the girl's father.

During the girl's singing, she took another card of mine from the right side of the piano, a different and older print of it...

I just let her have it. Before they go home, she lost it somewhere. I looked for it under the chairs and under the piano but can't find it.

THIS IS A DIFFERENT STORY OF HOW TO INSPIRE PARENTS WITH THEIR KIDS’ MUSIC STUDY –

I wrote a letter (handwritten) to Jasmine Yano’s parents, Dr. Victor Yano and Jennifer Sugiyama after teaching her the song “Soccer Is My Favorite”.

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Victor Yano,
I haven’t met a perfectionist child before until when I teach Jasmine piano the song “Soccer Is My Favorite”. We started slowly and whenever she makes a mistake, she had to repeat it again from the beginning of the song.

It happened twice that she misses the last note of the song so she had to start over again. I didn’t hear any complain from her or show any sign of fatigue until she finally played the whole song without a single mistake.

We even exceed our time by 10 minutes. After 70 minutes of amusement to her perfectionist character, all I can give her is a tap on her shoulder for a very well job done.

With this character of her, I think that she will excel in whatever field she will take in the future.

Best regards,

Roberto

         3rd TOURNEY OF THE YEAR--
      THE 2015 PALAU RAPID CHESS
                    CHAMPIONSHIP

JUST A WEEK after the successful 2015 Unrated Chess Tournament has concluded, the 3rd tournament organized by Palau Chess Federation will commence on Sunday, July 19 at Bethlehem Park—the 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship.
The Open division is a 9-round Swiss system event to give chance to unrated and lower rated players play against Palau top chess players: NMs Roberto Hernandez, Cyril Montel, Jr. and Tito Cabunagan; CM Bernardo Garcia, Jeff Balbalosa, Dennis Gonzales and Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. In this division, the players have to play at least 2 games a week.
The Women’s Division is a double round-robin event. It will be a test to surprise 3rd place finisher  in the Unrated tourney Joan Gemota, to try her mettle against the top 3 women chess players of Palau: WNM Angelica Parrado, Baby Edna Mission and Gladys Anne Paloma. Roberto informed Joan that Palau is short of women chess players and she might make it to Palau Women’s Team to the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan on Sept. 17-30.
The Junior Division is also a double round-robin affair with the Sisior sisters leading the way and a preparation for their participation in the 2015 World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad in Mongolia in Aug. Destiny, Angelil and Kyarii Sisior will be joined by their parents Angie and Harvey Sisior for another milestone in Palau chess history.
Registration fee is $15.00 for members, $17.00 for non-members or $20.00 for non-members for an automatic membership which Arnolfo Inres, the Unrated champion, prefers, for a saving of $3.00. The I. D. of Palau chess players have been distributed by Jeff, who will miss this event because he is having a vacation. He will teach Roberto how to use the Swiss Perfect software to continue the event in his absence. That system makes the Swiss system events easier to organize and have an automatic guide for tiebreak which was used successfully in the 2015 Palau Blitz Chess Championship and the Unrated.
In the 2015 Unrated Rapid Chess Tournament held at Bethlehem Park on Sunday, July 12, 2015, there were 7 unrated chess players, who registered, with the last one at 5pm and there is no time to play 4-round games so the organizers decided to hold it -- in one day, the next Sunday.
              The first 7 participants are 1. Koichi Matsuda, left, (Born on Feb. 10, 1944 -- tel. no. 778-9433) 2. Arnolfo Inres (Sept. 13, 1966 --Tel. 778-3287) 3. Joan Gemota (June 24, 1985 --Tel. 779-6454) 4. Pons Mahor (May 30, 1959) 5. Allan Alcid (April 13, 1964--Tel. 779-5618) 6. Johnny Carandang (Jan. 04, 1978--Tel. 778-2411) 7. Edward Artillaga (Oct. 01, 1988 Tel. 778-1143).
              The last 3 entrants are 8. Ariel Mina (Feb. 15, 1968 -- Tel. 779-8189) 9. Allan Bacuno (Nov. 18, 1979 - Tel. 488-5472) 10. Josef Karlo Moyet (Sept. 04, 1988 -- Tel. 488-4463).
When the list of participants reached 10 entrees, the 1st round was set. Joan Gemota was fitted against Ariel Mina, who is watching the finals of a basketball game nearby. The defaulting time is just one minute and Joan earned her first win via default.

In her game against Pons Mahor, Roberto noticed that Pons moved a pawn after Joan captured a bishop with a pawn that exposed her king for an illegal move. Since Pons didn't notify the arbiter about the illegal move and making a pawn move, Roberto explained to Joan that she has to move the king for it is under check.

After moving her king, Pons captured a pawn with a pawn and 2 moves later, he made an illegal move (putting his queen to a dark diagonal where it is originally from a white diagonal. He said, "I think it's not the right place for a queen to be." Roberto traced where the queen came from and declared an illegal move. So Joan won another tough one via illegal move.

In her 7th and last round game against Allan Bacuno, she is way behind materials as she has only a bishop and a king. But Allan is under extreme time pressure with 3 seconds left in his clock and when Allan's time expires, she reveled in excitement as she thought she won that game. Cyril Montel, Jr. noticed that it's not a win for her because she doesn't have enough materials to mate Allan's king. It doesn't matter as the half point is all she needed to win 3rd place for a trophy and $10.00 cash.

Arnolfo Inres and Allan Alcid are tied for 1st place with identical 6.5 points after 7 rounds. They drew their game so the winner over the other tiebreak (Direct Encounter) can't be applied.

The Swiss Perfect software computed the other tiebreak and Inres emerged as champion with a trophy and $20.00 cash in which he pays for the next tournament on Sunday, July 19, the 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship.

The coming event offers cash prizes of $100.00, $80.00, $60.00, $40.00 and $20.00 for the top 5 finishers in the Open division + trophies to the top 4 and medal for 5th. There are trophies and cash prize also in the women and junior divisions.

Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3753: (This is a very tricky puzzle that an average player can’t solve in an hour) 1. Qc4+! Kxc4 2. e4!! (The key move! White threatens mate on 3. Na3) …Rxa4 (preventing the first mate threat…BUT) 3. Nd6 mates still.

(333) MUSIC AND ME (Oct. 25) Parents' Support

PICTORIAL WITH TAIWAN BEAUTIES
On October 09, 2012, these Taiwanese beauties have a pictorial with Roberto Hernandez before 11:00 pm. One of them gave him $5.00 tip for playing "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin", the most popular Taiwanese song according to Hernandez, that even 4-year-old kids know the song. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

    PARENTS' SUPPORT IN THEIR
       CHILDREN MUSIC STUDY

I’M TEACHING Uroi Salii piano in 2001 the song “Jamaica Farewell” and her parents, Carlos ‘Hiros’ Salii and Bilung Gloria Salii, were resting inside their room.

The melody of the song sounds familiar to them and they both get out of the room and sang with me with Uroi playing the accompaniment of the song on the upright piano.
After singing, they asked me, “Is that (Jamaica Farewell) the title of that song?” I said yes. Mr. Salii said, “I know the melody but I didn’t know the title of the song.

It’s a very nice feeling that the parents of my students help and support their kids’ music study. When I pursue my musical career, I have to pay for my own tuition fees and other expenses in studying at Yamaha School of Music because my parents can’t afford it.

I always point it out to my students who have parents that can afford their musical study; that they should appreciate being how lucky they are for having all those resources to learn so they must show their appreciation to their parents by studying hard and learning their favorite songs even though it’s oldies but goodies.

It’s a very special sensation if parents can sing songs and their kids are the ones playing the instruments instead of singing karaoke – which is a machine. Live musicians can adjust to the tempo and pitch of the songs. While there is now pitch control in most karaoke machines, the ‘free-timing’ in singing with live musician is something different. In karaoke, you follow the machine while in live musicians, they follow the singer.
