(492) WATCH OUT FOR PAUL GARCIA (TBN-June 15-21, 2007)

HE'S NOT yet a competitive type of chess player but Paul Garcia, an employee at Palau Royal Resort, got all the resources he needs to be a future chess master in Palau.

He is now undergoing intensive training by Palau's 4th ranked Roberto Hernandez, who moved in the PRR Dormitory 1 last Thursday, June 07 as he is now working there as musician.

They share a room with 2 other co-workers who are not interested in chess as Paul is.

He's got chess books, clocks, by the book openings and personal teaching from Hernandez.

Garcia don't intend to participate in any tournament yet this year and will try his mettle next year against Palau's top players.

By then, he's assuming that he will get all the knowledge that he needs to fare well enough.

There are some other good chess players at PRR. One of them is Felix Lapitan, who is not working there anymore.

Lapitan showed his great potential in the 2005 Rapid Chess tournament held at Jean's Boutique and Store where he is running 3rd most of the times but settled for outside the top 10 finishers because he lost by default to many of his remaining games due to schedule conflict.

Sooner or later, Palau Royal Resort might have a chess team that can participate if a first team championship will be held in Palau.

At present, the format is not advisable as most players are working full time shifts that organizers are doing the most flexible schedule in the world to accomodate all players.

Last year, the first Palau Invitational Chess Championship (PICC) was held from August 31-September 04 and the top 6 players of Palau were able to finish the round-robin format.

Some games were played late in the night.

With the 2nd PICC to be held also on the Labor Day weekend this year, scheduling will be as flexible as it was.

It will now be known as the Ambassador Marino Cup after the generous Philippine Ambassador pledged $1,000.00 as prize pot for the event and an additional 2 round trip tickets (Palau-Manila-Palau) as extra prize.
