(1449) PALAU CHESS TEAM -- Presentation to 2016 Baku Chess Olympiad




THE Baku Chess Olympiad organizers asked us to make a video/photo presentation of Palau Chess Team to that Olympiad. When we are watching the Opening Ceremony, none other countries have been featured. It's just a waste of time in my part to spend dozens of hours preparing this.... hoping to promote Palau chess to the world.

WRITTEN BIOGRAPHY OF MEMBERS:

1. ROBERTO A. HERNANDEZ – Team Captain, Player and Counselor to Congress.                
                   Pioneered chess in Palau in June 09, 2002; Chairman of Knights and
                   Rooks Chess Club (Palau) est. Sept. 15, 2002. Organized ALL chess
                   tournaments since then; Palau-- accepted as FIDE Member in 2005;
                   General Secretary of Palau Chess Federation; First time that Palau is
                   represented by him in 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, in
                   2010, 2012, 2014 World Chess Olympiads in Russia, Turkey and
                   Norway respectively; National Master, National Arbiter of Palau;
                   First FIDE Instructor of Palau-2014; Chess Columnist at Tia Belau,   
                   Palau’s first newspaper since Dec. 29, 2002—Present. Currently, he’s
                   the musician of Palau Royal Resort since June 01, 2007.

2. ERIC KSAU SURANGEL WHIPPS – Delegate
                  Elected as Palau Chess Federation President in Feb. 10, 2013; Head
                  Of Delegation in 2013 World Youth Chess Championship in Al-Ain
                  UAE, where he gained his FIDE Arbiter title; Delegate in the 2014
                  World Chess Olympiad in Norway. He is the Team Captain of the
                  Palau women Team in that Olympiad; National Instructor – 2014.

3. JOSELITO MARCOS – (Papua New Guinea) Head of Delegation
                  He was invited in the 2011 Palau Invitational Chess Championship.
                  He donated $100.00 as cash prize to 2009-2010 PNCC; $200.00 for                                                miscellaneous expenses of 2011 PICC and his $150.00 cash prize                                of that event. He is the creator of PCF website

                  133 countries; provided PCF with Mega Data Base & Correspondence
                  Data Base 2013; Honorary Member of Palau Chess Federation; Deputy
                  Director of Academic, Department of Education – PNG.

4. DENNIS GONZALES – Player
                  He’s the Treasurer of Palau Chess Federation. He played in Palau chess 
                  tournaments since 2004; champion of the Reserves Division of 2012
                  Palau National Chess Championship; Board 4 player in the 2014 World
                  Chess Olympiad in Norway; accountant at Hanpa Corporation;
                  National Arbiter and National Instructor (2014) of PCF.

5. PAQUITO SURINGA, JR.  – Player
                 Started learning chess during the 2007 Palau Royal Resort Rating Chess
                 Tournament; Champion of 2013 Palau Open (Group B); Chief Cook at
                 Palau Royal Resort Cafeteria.

6. JEFFREY BALBALOSA – Player
                 Palau’s first Online Arena FIDE Master; Reserved player in the 2014
                 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway; undefeated champion of
                 2014 Ksau Cup; champion of 2016 Rapid Chess tourney (Part 2);
                 He’s a Systems Analyst at Surangel’s and a National Instructor (2014).

7. ALLAN ALCID – Player
                 He finished 5th in the 2015 Palau National Chess Championship.
                 He qualified to be a member of Palau Open Chess Team to Baku;
                 He topped the 2015 Top 3 Qualifying event to be included in the Top
                 10 Division of 2015 PNCC. He specializes in graphics, design and print.

The brainchild of 2006 PICC are Roberto Hernandez, left and Oceania Zonal President IA Gary Bekker. The two collaborated to have Palau’s top 6 players gain their initial FIDE ratings.





Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino, middle, awarded the prizes to the winners of 2006 PICC. The generous Ambassador sponsored 2 tournaments with $1,000.00 total cash prizes in each tourney (1 local and 1 invitational). At left is Roberto Hernandez and at right is Philippine and US Master Almario Marlon Bernardino.

 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship Women’s Division champion WIM Arianne Caoili with Palau lone rep Roberto Hernandez. With the championship, Caoili made it to FIDE World Cup. The two met again in the succeeding 2010 and 2012 World Chess Olympiads.

Prior to the 2010 WCO in Russia’s excursion on Olympiad rest day, Palau teammates Tito Cabunagan, left, and Roberto Hernandez had breakfast at Twin Olympics Hotel with Jan-Olav Berglund, the Delegate of Palau in 2008, 2010 and 2012 World Chess Olympiads in Dresden, Germany, Russia and Istanbul, Turkey.
