(1644) BOBOT, ANGELO, JEFF--TOP 3 FINISHERS OF 2019 PRCC; CRUCIAL 7th, 8th ROUND (TBN-March 25, 2019)

MORE WOMEN CHESS PLAYERS IN PALAU THAN IN NEW ZEALAND

Five of the 11 contestants in the ongoing 2019 PRCC are playing here in the 4th round with WFM Angelica Parrado, middle, nipping her oldest daughter Angelil Sisior; Angelica Magno, left, practicing with Jedidia Marinas. Angie’s other daughter Destiny, 2nd from right, lost to her in the 2nd round. The girl at right is an observer and might join later like the Chinese girl playing/participating in the PMA Chess in School being taught by Jennifer Angeles, the Chief Arbiter of this event.           (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

BOBOT, ANGELO, JEFF -- TOP 3 FINISHERS;
   CRUCIAL 7th, 8th ROUND OF 2019 PRCC

When the only undefeated players Bobot Tan and WFM Angelica Parrado clashed in the 5th round, the result is an indication of another plum for Bobot with the victory. But when Angie crushed Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor in the 6th round and Jeff Balbalosa winning over me and drawing with the ever-improving Angelil Sisior, it’s a fight for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place being tightly contested in the crucial 7th and 8th round this Sunday, March 24 for the penultimate round of 2019 Palau Rapid Chess Championship at Bethlehem Park.

7th round pairings: (First name to play the white pieces) 1. Destiny Sisior vs. Bobot 2. Jeff vs. Angie 3. Angel Salvadora vs. Jun Mintar 4. Mahor vs. Samuel Palingcod 5. Jennifer Angeles vs. Angelil 6. Mary Grace Capili vs. Me 7. Manik Hossain vs. Bruce Soriano 8. Dave Cristobal vs. Joan Gemota 9. Kyarii Sisior vs. Nobu Yano 10. Angelica Magno vs. Paquito Suringa, Jr. 11. Mary Jane Bodo vs. Michael Gulla 12. Brandon Kyle Soriano vs. Rommel Gulla 13. Khol Sugiyama vs. Rustum Cabuso 14. Jedidia Marinas vs. Wakako Sisior 15.                It was learned from the 2016 Oceania Chess Confederation meeting during the Baku, Azerbaijan World Chess Olympiad that Palau has more women chess players than New Zealand.

In the ongoing 2019 Palau Rapid Chess Championship that started in March 03, there are more than 1/3 women participants --- 1. WFM Angelica Parrado 2. Joan Gemota 3. Angelil Sisior 4. Jennifer Angeles 5. Destiny Sisior 6. Angelica Magno 7. Kyarii Sisior 8. Jedidia Marinas 9. Wakako Sisior 10. Mary Jane Bojo 11. Mary Grace Capili.

(1628) ANGIE, THE CHIEF ARBITER OF 2019 PRCC (TBN-March 04, 2019)

TARGETING THE SLOTS FOR 2020 WORLD                CHESS OLYMPIAD IN RUSSIA
These veteran and new women chess players of Palau are gearing up for the 2020 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, where Tito and I have been there in 2010. Aside from Angie’s 2 teenager daughters Angelil and Destiny Sisior, Jennifer Angeles is also interested because the date is Aug. 01-14, 2020 (summer school break). L-R: Joy Flores Whipps, Joan Gemota, WFM Angelica Parrado, Bheng, Angelica Magno, Mary Jane Bojo, Mary Grace Capili and Jedidia Marinas.

     ANGIE, THE CHIEF ARBITER OF
                    2019 P.R.C.C.

All is set for the opening day of 2019 Palau Rapid Chess Championship on March 3 at Bethlehem Park with more than 40 contestants expected to participate. Because Tito Cabunagan is too busy to be the next FIDE Arbiter of Palau, WFM Angelica “Angie” Parrado will take his place. With at least 30 participants, she would get her 2nd norm as FA. She’s got her first norm during the FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar held in 2017 where she finished 2nd to me followed by Tito and Jennifer Angeles.

During the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway, Philippines FA Red Dumuk was one of the Arbiters in that Olympiad. It’s an automatic International Arbiter (IA) norm if an FA has been an arbiter of a tourney that has 150 or more participants. In the 2018 WCO in Batumi, Georgia, FA Yildirim Yucel of Turkey is the arbiter of Palau women’s team vs. Togo where the Palau beauties swept Togo.

Among the 46 contestants in my list, Mohammad Manik Hossain, who is one of Palau’s 12 reps in the 2019 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Guam in Feb. 17-24, is still in Tokyo, Japan as the lone participant of Palau in the prestigious Tokyo Marathon on March 3. He will be back on March 6 and Palau Rating Officer Jamie Kenmure suggested him to be unpaired in rounds 1 and 2. Palau Chess Federation Treasurer Dennis Gonzales will not make it also on Sun. because of earlier commitment from 10am-3pm.

During the OZCC in Guam, the PCF delegation was able to obtain the Swiss Manager and if it is working now, it might be used in this year’s PBCC. For back-up, I prepared also the list of participants, their rapid ratings and birth dates.

Jello Aguaras will miss it also on the opening day but I inquire to Jamie if 3 or more players can be unpaired in the first 2 rounds and he said it is possible. My piano/chess student Nicholas Nehez will not make it this Sun. because they have a planned trip this Sunday. Baby Edna Mission will likewise miss the opening day with different reason.

As there are no cash prizes in this event, it was suggested that the registration for adults be $4.00 and $2.00 for kids.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE POSSIBLE CONTESTANTS WITH THEIR RAPID RATINGS:

 2018 Palau National Chess Championship

                    at Ernguul Park

At the cellar is Morton Sawaichi, who has yet to score a point and half point at least for a draw to have his initial rating.

Samuel Palingcod, right,  and Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. had a draw.

The latest Junior champion Gian Gabriel Claronino, right, had lost only 1 game (vs. Aome Angeles) and clinched the junior division in a style--sweeping the other 3 participants. They have to do a double round-robin as there are only 5 players that made it because of busy Christmas season.

Charley Patris, right, won over Reece Reklai, left. Maybe Charley will have an increase in his 1274 FIDE Rating as he scored 3 points in this event.

Despite the loss in the final round to Tito Cabunagan, right, Neph Macasaet finished the tourney with 4 points. That might be enough to improve his 1555 rating.

Morton Sawaichi finally scored a whole point by mating Glen Navarroza, right.

My game with Bobot Tan, left, is an exciting one heading for a draw but Bobot captured the b7 pawn that allowed me to force the exchange of queens with me having a passed f pawn that clinches the 3rd spot (6 points). l won my first round game over Jello, lost the next 3 to Cyril, Jun Mahor and Dennis but won the last 5 over Morton, Neph, Charley, Pax and Bobot. It's almost the same story in the 2002 All-Filipino Chess Tournament in June 09, 2002 (the first ever chess tournament in Palau) where I won my last 4 games (against Lemuel Bacor, Mike Miguel, Jr., Consul General Julius Torres and Vincent Vergara) to clinched 3rd runner-up.

The last game of the day is another draw between Jeff Balbalosa, right and Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. (both are my teammates in the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaihan) in an endgame of bishop of the same color.
