(1271) ROUND 9 OF 2016 WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD --Fiji Swept Palau; Roberto Needs to Win Last 2 Rounds for CM Title

GUAM'S YOUNGEST PLAYER IN THE 2016 BAKU CHESS OLYMPIAD
FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is about to leave when Roberto Hernandez was able to take a shot of his conversation with Guam's youngest woman player. It's the first time that Guam has fielded a women's team in an Olympiad. In 2014 WCO in Tromso, Norway, their Open team did good with Jonathan Molod gaining a CM title. Their board 1 player, Enofre Manuel is replaced this time by Pete Mafnas and their Delegate/Founder of Guam Echecs Leon Ryan has retired and was replaced by Roger Orio.

ROUND 9 OF 2016 WORLD CHESS
                          OLYMPIAD --
                    FIJI SWEPT PALAU,
Roberto Needs to win last 2 rounds for
                            a CM title

Fiji fielded its strongest line-up in the 9th round of 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan to get the maximum results -- a sweep of Palau chess team.

Prior to the start of their games, at least 25 minutes, Palau Team Captain CM Joselito Marcos recollects his memories with Fiji's CM Manoj Kumar during the 2011 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Rotorua, New Zealand...

They are roommates in that event. Manoj usually wakes Joselito up for breakfast. One morning, Manoj didn't wake Joselito up -- for some reason--they will be playing against each other on that day's round. Joselito is a little bit late in that round and he teases Manoj during Palau vs. Fiji's 9th round match that, "Manoj, you did it on purpose not to wake me up because you know we are playing against each other!"

At Board 1, CM Calvid Prasad, the current President of Fiji Chess Federation, easily trounced Paquito Suringa, Jr. and CM Manoj Kumar subdued another first timer in an Olympiad Allan Alcid at Board 2.

Roberto Hernandez was mated by his opponent to have a desperate attempt to gain a CM title by winning his last 2 games.

At Board 4, Dennis Gonzales suffered the same fate to have a zero score for the 4th time for Palau team.
