(540) ONLY 14 GAMES PLAYED IN THIS WEEK'S RAPID CHESS (TBN-Dec. 14-20, 2007)

ANDRES 'Aying' Mestizo II is the latest addition to the ever-growing chess enthusiasts that's willing to test his mettle against stronger players.

He was about to join the ongoing rapid chess tournament at Jean's Boutique and Store on Sunday, December 09 but didn't go inside the store as the door is locked with 4th seed Roberto Hernandez waiting inside.

He went home disappointed and will try again next week as this week's games totaled only to 14 with the 1st game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 between top seed Menandro Manuel against Hernandez on Wednesday night, December 05.

The former prevailed in more than  40 moves of King's Gambit Accepted.

Abraham 'Abe' Francisco is watching and after the game, Ka Abe analyzed a deep variation in the endgame that could have at least gained half point to Hernandez.

Ka Abe was assigned as Tournament Director of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) first ever chess tournament to start next week.

The tournament was the brainchild of Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino, the number one supporter of chess in Palau in the last 2 years.

RESULTS OF THE OTHER 13 GAMES -SUNDAY, DEC. 08:
Blitz chess expert Tony Villa scored 2.5 points in 4 games. He won over venue host Gene Pastrana and National Master Manny Nedic, drew with Manuel and lost to Nedic in their 2nd game to keep the lead.

He will have a Christmas vacation on Dec. 16 and his remaining games will be played next year.

Joven delos Santos failed to score a point and lost all of his 7 games to Pastrana (2 games), Hernandez (2), Manuel (2) and a game to 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr., who lost to the Most Improved Player of the event Craig Dittrich.

Montel, Jr. refused to play with Hernandez as he slept only for a few hours.

Nedic came just in time and clobbered Hernandez in the masterful handling of queen and rook maneuvers.
