(526) "BUHAWI" CONQUERED 2 CHESS COMPUTERS (TBN-

RANDY Sioson was nicknamed "Buhawi" (Tornado), by fellow workers at Palau Royal Resort for his showoff and boastful attitude.

He lived up to the expectation as he clobbered the 2 participating chess computers in the penultimate round of PRR rating chess tournament held at Dormitory 1 on October 23, 2007.

And he did it in simultaneous game!

Because Excalibur chess computer took more than 2 minutes per move, players are advised to take on the 2 computers at a time to save time and concentrate more on stronger Ivan II, the conqueror chess computer.

With just more than a week to finish their remaining games, the 2 machines are expected to lose more games as players found its weaknesses and strengths.

Sioson outwitted Excalibur in 58 moves of Dutch Defence and trounced the talking and taunting Ivan II in 39 moves of Benko Gambit.

In other few completed games, Dennis Lara kept his chance alive for the championship when he dealt Zaldy Ranopa his 4th loss of the tourney with a 46-move victory of Queen's Gambit Declined.

He also drubbed Tony Penas in 47 moves of Bishop Opening but dropped a point to top seed Roberto Hernandez in 49 moves of Dutch Defence and suffered his 5th setbacks.

Arnel Pama seized the 2nd spot from Jaime Guevarra after executing a deviation from Hernandez vs. Excalibur game and also won one default game over lone lady participant Zuenie Mirabueno, who gained 2 points from 4 default draws with the 2 machines.

She lost all her remaining games by default.

If the players will not finish their remaining games, they might be declared draws to the disadvantage of players who have chances for the top 5 slots.

Players are advised to play as many games as they can.

Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino will organize a chess tournament for Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) members.

He borrowed 3 chess boards and clocks from Hernandez to be used for the month-long tourney.

PRR workers Abraham 'Abe' Francisco, Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. and Arnold Rivera are members of INC and are expected to participate.

Hernandez suggested to the organizers to form a chess club and feed him back the results of the games so that it will also be published in this column.

After the current tournament, King Royal Chess Club of PRR will hold another chess tilt with shorter time control (30 minutes for each player to finish the game or Rapid).

Tentative date is the 3rd week of November and players don't need to write their moves and they can play a game on their break time.

Excalibur Chess Computer will not be fielded in because it does not have the rapid chess time control.

The same time control format and chess tournament are being planned by the pioneer Knights And Rooks Chess Club to be participated in by Palau's top players with some interested players from KRCC of PRR to be invited.

The likes of Nino Flores, Guevarra, Ranopa, Pama, Lara, Abe, Paul Garcia, Laurence Abuton, Robert Tubice, Penas and most improved Pax are good enough to give Palau's top players tough competition.
