(542) BAPTISM OF FIRE PART 2 (TBN-Dec. 21-27, 2007)

NEWCOMER Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II got his baptism of fire in his first ever chess competition in Palau with almost the same results as the other first timers.

He lost his first game to Dennis Gonzales, who's got his baptism of fire in July 2004, losing both games to Ivan II Chess Computer.

Aying will try to catch up some games by playing Palau Royal Resort players on their day offs starting with Dennis Lara on Thursday, Dec. 20 at Dormitory 1 from 6:30-7:30 pm.

He is scheduled to play Jaime Guevarra on Saturday, Dec. 22, 4th seed Roberto Hernandez on Dec. 26 and Paul Garcia (not yet confirmed) at the same time and venue.

Another newcomer, Mike Mercado, scored the biggest upset of the year-ending rapid chess tournament by sweeping top seed Menandro 'Boy' Manuel in both white and black pieces.

He seized the 2nd spot standings from Jose Omega, who suffered another heartbreaking loss to Gonzales.

Mercado's victories came after losing his first 2 games to Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic and Gonzales, who had a perfect Sunday by beating venue host Gene Pastrana.

Danny Dandoy is still rusty and lost all of his 3 games played to Pastrana (2 games) and to Hernandez in more than 40 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening where he is ahead by a piece and couldn't hold on to his advantage and finally lost by time forfeit.

In both of his games against Pastrana, he is also ahead in material but couldn't sustain his initiative.

The decline in the quality of his game may be attributed to lack of practice as his practice partner Mike Miguel, Jr. left Palau 2 years ago.

A Bangladesh national approached Hernandez last week and is interested to participate in the current tournament.

He didn't show up on Sunday, Dec. 16 but he has still time to catch up if he will try to play as many games as he can on Saturday when Guevarra, Lara, Garcia and Hernandez will be at Jean's Boutique and Store from 10:00 am to play all available players.
