        ROBERTO AVERTED A SHUTOUT;

         DREW  AT BOARD 1 VS. GUAM

PALAU Open team Board 1 player Roberto Hernandez averted a shutout of Guam Chess Team in the 3rd round of 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. Board 2 Cyril Tomas Almitante-Montel lasted the longest but lost to Rudolp Soriano. CM Bernard Garcia lost the fastest when he blundered a piece while Dennis R Gonzales is also ahead in position and material but couldn't convert his advantage into full point and lost instead. Roberto is ahead by a knight for 2 pawns. After giving back the advantage, he is down by 2 pawns but cleverly exchange the g pawn so that his opponent will have a pawn and a bishop of the wrong queening square thus a draw against Guam's top player Efren Enofre Manuel. It was the first point of Palau Open team as the women's team suffered its 3rd sweep from a strong South African team. In 2012 World Chess Olympiad, the Palau Open team suffered 3 straight sweeps before Bernard scored the first half point of Palau in an Olympiad with a draw against board 3 player of Macau.
