(442) MANUEL, ETI LEAD RAPID CHESS (TBN-Oct. 06-13, 2006)

PALAU'S top player Menandro 'Boy' Manuel and Edwin Eti, cash prize sponsor, shared the lead after two convincing victories each in the opening rounds of 2006 Rapid Chess Tournament held on Independence Day, October 01 at Jean's Boutique and Store premises.

Manuel lived up to expectation with his masterful conquests o 2nd seed Jose Omega, a cook at Ashibi Restaurant, and Joel Azana of Daewoo Corporation.

Eti recovered from a piece down and clobbered 4th seed Roberto Hernandez, a pianist at Teppan Dragon (Japanese Restaurant), in their Sicilian Defence game early in the evening as both have finished their job responsibilities before starting to play.

Eti also drubbed Azana to keep pace with Manuel with 2 straight victories each.

Eti sponsored $100.00 for the cash prize of the top 4 finishers. Another $100.00 will be added from the brilliancy prize of 2006 Palau National Chess Championship donation from Pinoy Express Remittance through its manager, Manny Kimpo.

In the 2nd game of the day, Omega bounced back from first round defeat to trounce Manny Nedic and Azana did the same thing and defeated 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. by time forfeit.

Venue host Gene Pastrana didn't play because he is sick.

The first 6 games of the opening round were all wins by players with the black pieces but in the last game of the day between Hernandez and Azana, the player with the white pieces (Hernandez) prevailed to avoid a black sweep of the week.

The 3 newcomers didn't show up and they're expected to start next week in this double round-robin year-ending tournament.

Registration fee is $15.00 and the $10.00 will be added to the cash prize pot and the $5.00 will be added to the fund of the organizing Knights and Rooks Chess Club.

Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich showed up but didn't confirm his participation.

His first tournament in Palau, the 1st Ambassador Marion Cup Rapid Chess tournament, is his baptism of fire and it used the same format. He finished 8th among 11 participants in the rated division.

After the completion of all regular games, Eti, Manuel and Hernandez held blitz chess tourney with Eti prevailing once over Hernandez and twice over Manuel to clinch the cash prize without finishing all of other games as he virtually clinch it after scoring 3 points.
