(426) FINAL DAY OF NCC (Aug. 25-Sept. 01, 2006)

THIS Sunday, August 27, will be the final day of 2006 Palau National Chess Championship and the first National Master of Palau will be a tight contest between top seed Menandro Manuel, Manny Nedic and Cyril Montel, Jr. to be held at Jean's Boutique and Store premises.

The trophies and $100.00 brilliancy prize are donations from Pinoy Express Remittance through its manager, Manny Kimpo.

A Saturday afternoon match was held between Manuel and Jess Toldoya that resulted in a convincing win for Manuel to solidify his quest for being Palau's first National Master. He clobbered Toldoya in 23 moves of Sicilian Defence (Najdorf Variation).

He also trounced Montel, Jr. in 37 moves of the same defence on Sunday, August 20 in the only game of the day as the Toldoya vs. Roberto Hernandez match was called off as Toldoya didn't come back. His match against Nedic was also postponed.

On the final day of the NCC, players will lose by default if they don't show up.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE FINAL DAY MATCHES:

Manuel (2 games) vs. Toldoya and Francis Temaungil;
Jose Omega (3 games) vs. Montel, Jr., Gene Pastrana and Morton Sawaichi;
Montel, Jr. (2 games) vs. Pastrana and Sawaichi;
Hernandez (3 games) vs. Nedic, Sawaichi and Toldoya;
Nedic (2 games) vs. Toldoya and Temaungil;
Sawaichi vs. Toldoya and Temaungil.

Due to the limited time of Hernandez, some of his games will have to be played in rapid time control format. He only had 3 hours available to his last 3 games.

The Toldoya-Nedic and Manuel-Toldoya matches are the more crucial as Manuel is very much ahead in the race after defeating Montel, Jr.

Manuel, who just come back from vacation, seemed to be very fresh and sharp with his usual chess tactics and strategy. If he will beat Toldoya, Nedic and Montel, Jr. can't catch up with him.

The decision to finish the NCC this Sunday is to prepare the top 6 in the standings in the coming 2006 Palau Invitational Chess Championship that will be held on August 31- September 04 with 4 FIDE rated players from Australia, New Zealand and Philippines to participate so that the top 6 players of Palau can have an international rankings if they will score at least 3 points in 9 games.
