(427) PALAU WELCOMES FIDE RATED PLAYERS (TBN-Sept. 01-08, 2006)

EVERYTHING IS SET UP FOR THE INAUGURAL 2006 PALAU INVITATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP to start on August 31 at Palau Royal Resort with the first round to be played starting at 10 am with 2 players from New Zealand Paul Spiller and Hilton Bennett, Gary Bekker of Australia and Philippines/USA Master Marlon Bernardino.

Mr. Bekker, the Oceania Zone President, sponsored the event with Roberto Hernandez since April and finalized the tournament in the last 2 weeks as things were settled finally.

Mr. Bekker also sponsored the $700.00 cash prize of the top 3 finishers and the top Palau player.

The single round-robin tournament will allow Palau's top 6 players to obtain international rankings if they score at least 3 points in 9 games.

Palau Chess Federation chairman Francis 'Sno' Temaungil will act as arbiter with the help of Mr. Bekker, who is an International Arbiter himself.

In the first special 2 games of the tournament, US and Philippine National Master Marlon Bernardino defeated Jose Omega and in the last game of the day, Australian Gary Bekker defeated Menandro Manuel in a game that lasted up to 1:30 am at the Palau Royal Resort.

FINAL DAY OF 2006 NCC

In the final day of National Chess Championship, Manny Nedic became the first National Master of Palau after defeating Jess Toldoya last Saturday and Hernandez in 74 moves of Modern Defence.

He finished the tournament with 17-3-2 win-loss-draw record and top seed Menandro Manuel can catch up with him if he will win his last game vs. Toldoya, who can't play because he collapsed in his bathroom on Sat. night.

They will play one game of their time disposal. If Manuel will win, there will be 2 National Masters of Palau.

Manuel may win the championship after the tiebreak as he won more games than Nedic.

A blitz chess tourney was held after the final day games and Cyril Montel, Jr. won the event after defeating Nedic in their sudden-death game as they ended up with the same score after 8 rounds.
