MANIK FINISHES PNCC WITH 7-7 SLATE

MOHAMMAD MANIK Hossain will surely have an international ranking after finishing the 2010-2011 Palau National Chess Championship with a 50% winning performance as he had a 7-7 win-loss record after losing his last game to Jerry Sermeno in a marathon 69-move Sicilian Defence clash.

Manik's vast improvement is due to his dedication to learn more from Roberto Hernandez. His guidance in chess tactics, strategies, problem solving, puzzles, tricky positions and endgames are seen in his improved play.

In the first finished game on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1, Sermeno started anew with another win streak by beating Dennis Gonzales in 33 moves of Slav Defence.

Dennis bounced back from a setback and dealt Jeff Balbalosa his 7th straight losses with an escape with a win victory in 44 moves of Sicilian Defence.

Jeff is on the brink of getting his first point had he found the right continuation. He has a bewildering attack and according to Cyril's analysis, an inevitable win should have been achieved with a single queen move.

CURRENT STANDINGS AND PLAYERS WIN-LOSS-DRAW RECORD: 1. Menandro Manuel (8-1-0) 2. Roberto Hernandez (8-2-0) 3. Mohammad Manik Hossain (7-7-0) 4. Tito Cabunagan (5-4-1) 5. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (5-1-0) 6. Dennis Gonzales (5-3-0) 7. Gonzalo Escapatoria (4-3-1) 8. Jerry Sermeno (4-2-0) 9. Jeffrey Negrillo (3-6-0) 10. Manuel Mahor (2-2-0) 11. Elizalde Madrinan (1-4-0) 12. Ferdinand Gutierrez (1-5-0) 13. Angie Parrado (0-3-0) 14. Andres Mestizo II (0-3-0) 15. Jeff Balbalosa (0-7-0).

The tourney will end on Feb. 13 and those players who are absent on the final day will lose their games by default. If both players are absent, their games will be declared drawn games.

Mahor has been contacted in the last 3 weeks but no answer from him. Mestizo II said he will play as many games as he can last Sunday but he didn't make it also.

The special game between Dennis and Tito on Jan. 17 was postponed and instead, Dennis played against Gutierrez and Dennis prevailed in 27 moves of Scandinavian Defence.

Another Monday evening match is set between and Gutierrez, who is having a day off on that day. A Wednesday afternoon match was also set between Hernandez and Sermeno at 4:00 pm.

Rustum Tolentino, a player from Philippines, would like to come to Palau for a visit and would like to join an open tournament in Palau. Through their chat at Facebook, he was offered to join the 3rd Palau Invitational Chess Championship to be held in June 28-July 05, 2011 with players from Papua New Guinea, Australia and Europe to be invited.

However, he has a FIDE rating of 2364, which is very high and would give no chance to local and invited players with 2000 and below rating. He had achieved already one International Master (IM) norm.

Negotiation is still going on and he has to buy his own airfare.
