BERNARD GARCIA confirmed his participation in the 2011 Palau National Chess Championship to make this event a 21-player round-robin affair.

With the addition of Ann Acebron and Jenalyn Ortiz, co-workers of Karen Lee at Palau Mobile Corp., there are now 4 women contestants that match the same number of women's players in Palau -- the 2002 All-Filipino Chess tournament in June 09, 2002.

On the opening day of this tourney at Beken's Store and General Merchandise premises on Sunday, June 26, Tito Cabunagan reasserted his mastery of Roberto Hernandez' play and prevailed in 57 moves of Pirc Defence after the latter lost his queen in exchange of a bishop and a rook.

Hernandez missed a simple simplification move on the 30th move by exchanging queens while ahead by a piece and an easy win but rushed a knight move that allows Tito to fork his adversary's king and queen.

It's the only game of the opening round because the players around--Menandro 'Boy' Manuel, Gene Pastrana and Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. refused to play an official game citing rustiness and not well prepared.

Upon Bernard's confirmation, 2 slots became available for Acebron and Ortiz, who will become part of Palau Women's Team in 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.

Together with Karen Lee, they are invited to play as many games as they can against any available players on Saturday, July 02, at 2:00 pm at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1.

Hernandez contacted Angie Parrado, Pax, Jeff Balbalosa and Manuel to be available for the 3 ladies' first tournament games in Palau.

Hernandez sets up 4 chess tables with clocks, score sheets, pens, chess boards and pieces anticipating a very busy afternoon.

Manuel arrived first and while waiting for players, he read Tia Belau's Issue 25 (June 20, 2011). He gives also some information about his wife who can be of big help for players going to Istanbul as she is working as Division Manager at Philippine Trade and Training Center of the Department of Trade and Industry.

Her name is Elizabeth Manuel and getting Turkish visa is very much easier with her help. She might be the team captain of Palau Women's Team depending on the agreement that may arise with Congressman Pichay and Hermandez' meeting.

Pax has just finished his laundry and  he played the first official gmae at PRR Dorm 1 against Manuel. Angie is on her way while Mohammad Manik Hossain will come at 4:00 after his work in Airai Shell KB Station is finished at 3:00 pm.

Hernandez and Pax practiced more than 10 blitz chess games on Friday afternoon after Hernandez taught Pax some basics of playing keyboard. The chess practice is to prepare Pax against his first unknown opponent.

The score of their first 4 games is equal at 2-2 but Hernandez prevailed in the last remaining games as he's got familiar with the style of play of Pax.

Those practice games somehow helped Pax as he scored his first ever win against a rated opponent and Palau's former top player for 5 consecutive years. In their Giocco Piano encounter, Pax got the quality advantage (a rook for a knight) on the 21st move and a salvo of precise and accurate moves forced Boy Manuel to desist from resistance and headbent tendered his unconditional surrender while facing mate in 2 moves.

They are in the middle of their game when Angie Parrado arrives with a lady friend and 2 daughters who can play chess and now in Level 4 of the computer chess software "Chess Titans".

They practiced at one of the vacant chess table and Hernandez can't resist taking pictures of the girls that may become CHESS FUTURE OF PALAU especially if they will be their own mom representing Palau  in 2012 World Chess Olympiad.

Lee, Acebron, Ortiz, Tito, Bernard and Jeff didn't make it and when Manik arrives, he played Pax and Angie played a rapid time control game against Manuel they have to go somewhere at 6:00 pm.

The loss to Pax somehow affected the focus of Manuel as he allowed Angie to escape with a draw by perpetual check at 45 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted. Slow start is not new to Manuel. On two occasions, in 2003 and 2005, he lost his first 2 games and still managed to clawed back and won small cash or trophy.

Pax scored another stunning victory over Manik in 42 moves of another Giocco Piano and now leads the tournament with a perfect 2-0 start.
