CYRIL, FELIX AND ANGIE ARE THE
  2015 P. N. C. C. CHAMPIONS
 
IT WAS a grand slam for defending champion Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. as he captured the recently concluded 2015 Palau National Chess Championship on Dec. 06 at Bethlehem Park. He won the 2014 PNCC, the 2015 Palau Blitz Chess Championship in January, the 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship and now the 2015 PNCC.

                Jeff Balbalosa settled for 1st runner-up, just half a point shy of tying Cyril although he won his final round match with Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr., the drawn game of Cyril and Manuel Mahor, Jr. reached Cyril’s point unreachable for Jeff to get his elusive National Master (NM) title.                 Before 5pm, Pax and Mahor played their game before all participants proceed to Executive Lounge for the Awarding Ceremony with Palau Chess Federation President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps. Pax prevailed in 48 moves of Queen’s Gambit Accepted to finished 5th and qualified for the top 5 spot in the Open Team composition of Palau Chess Team in 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan to be held on Sept. 17-30.                 Felix Oling, Jr. clinched the Reserves Division with a round to spare. He played his 9th round game against Joel Gemota and prevailed in just 23 moves of Queen’s Gambit Declined. Newcomer Karlo Moyet, and Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria, Jr. tied at 2nd and 3rd place and will receive their certificate, cash prize and trophy at awarding ceremony.
                In the combined Women and Junior Division, it’s a family affair with defending champ Angie Parrado claiming another feather in her cap with an 8-1 win-loss slate. Her only loss was dealt to her by her oldest daughter Angelil, who also are tied at 2nd and 3rd spot with younger sister Destiny.

                The next tournament of PCF is the inaugural 2016 Palau Bullet Chess Championship to be held on Jan. 11 (Monday) with time control of 3 minutes for each player to finish the game with 2 seconds increment. It’s the first time that PCF will hold the second fastest blitz chess tourney. The Lightning Chess is the fastest with 1 minute for each player to finish the game without increment.
