Bong Alipoon really catch-up in the 2nd and 3rd round of 2003 Palau Open Chess Tournament as he scored 3.5 points in 4 games that he played on Feb. 23, 2003 to lead the Class A finals in the early rounds.

He drubbed Freddie Dumlao and Mariano Agustin, Jr. both with the black pieces, then drew with Noel Filomeno and outlasted Consul General Julius Torres. He is fresh from vacation to Philippines and was included in the Class A due to his strong performance in the previous 2 tournaments.
  
NEWCOMER Menandro 'Boy' Manuel, 2002 All-Filipino Chess tourney champ Eddie Grefiel, 2002 Open champ Consul General Julius Torres, Roberto Hernandez and Danny Dandoy each scored 2 points to trail Alipoon in the early rounds of 2003 Open Chess Tournament Round 2 & 3 that is jointly sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Margarita Borja Dalton (venue host --Image Restaurant & Sports Bar), and Budget Mart.

Manuel clobbered Edgardo Enarsao and Cyril Montel, Jr. both with the black pieces likewise while Grefiel outwitted Mariano Agustin, Jr. and Roy Rebollos.

Consul General Julius Torres subdued Cyril Montel, Jr. before bowing to Alipoon but bounced back from that setback to score his 2nd victory of the day against Mike Miguel, Jr.

Roberto Hernandez also scored 2 points for touting Miguel, Jr. and Mario Ramos while Danny Dandoy dealt Dumlao his 2nd setback of the day and got his 2nd win over Ramos via default.

Enarsao had an even day as he won over Miguel, Jr. and the last game of the week is a victory for Montel, Jr. over Filomeno.

In the Class B Division, Amante Caballero nips Chito Vargas while 8-year-old Dmitri Kyle Villanueva succumbed to 14-year-old Arvie Leynes.

Father and son Ben and Kris Ramos each scored a victory over Norbert Villanuea and Allen Kangichi respectively.

Vincent Vergara and Remy Mingo's match ended in draw while Tutii Joe Chilton scored a whole point off Nilo de Jesus.
