THIS is the breakthrough that Palau Chess Federation is waiting to happen—to send at least one junior player to the biannual World Youth Chess Championship to be held in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates on Dec. 17 (arrival)-29(departure), 2013.

Hello Mr. Abundo, Thank you for the invitation. I will be able to attend the World Youth Chess Championships together with my son as I have gotten approval from my work and will get from his school tomorrow.

Here’s an email from Mr. Jan Berglund about this development:

Dear Mr. Hernandez,
Thank you for this interesting piece of information. It is good that someone really wants to participate!
Just so that there will be no misunderstanding:
- There is just one boy and his father going. Is that correct?
- Is there no girl, who wants to go free of charge, any age group? Ask around!
- Are there no one from any other age group, who would like to go to the cost of flight ticket and €100.-?
The tournament regulations states, that each member federation is entitled to send one boy and one girl for each age group and two accompanying persons (One male and one female) free of charge (Local transportation, board & lodging, sight-seeing, etcetera) at the expense of the organizers, in this case the UAE Chess Federation:
"Every National Federation can register one official player in each category (under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 years old, open and girls). This total of twelve (12) Official Players plus two (one man and one woman) accompanying officials belonging to the national federation are invited by the Organizers. A player must not have reached his 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, or 18th birthday, respectively, before January 1st of the year 2013."
On top of that, as I e-mailed you on October 9th, in Tallinn, Estonia I was promised, that the FIDE participation fee of €100.-/official invitees plus air fare would be paid for one boy, one girl, and one accompanying person by FIDE, as we are a FIDE #5 nation (Former CACDEC nation). To sum it up, that is totally free of charge for up to 3 people and to a reduced price for another up to 11 people. Best wishes, Jan

Roberto Hernandez offered a slot for Geaury Ken Pastrana, Ronald Mission and Cyrelle Ann Montel but they declined the offer because the date is Christmas time and there’s still some days left to finish school. Ksau Anthony Whipps, the 2013 PNCC Junior Champion, will miss 3 days in school.
Joy Flores Whipps, Ksau’s mom, asked Roberto to give Ksau some pointers and little training before going to UAE. Roberto has given him some endgame, opening, middle game, puzzle solving lessons for 2 hours each on Thursday and Friday (Dec. 05 and 06). Their next training is on Wed., Thursday and Friday afternoon.
Palau Delegate to 3 World Chess Olympiads Mr. Jan Berglund of Sweden, offered to coach Ksau at UAE while Palau Rating Officer Jamie Kenmure of Australia, offered the same and is excited to meet Palau Chess Federation new President.
