AFTER missing the last 3 tournaments, the 2002 All-Filipino champion Eddie Grefiel is back in the second round of the 2004 Open Chess tournament held at Thrift Mart in Malakal.
Nestor Canaria is hosting and sponsoring the event. His son, Den, is participating in his first ever tournament.
Grefiel won his first 3 matches over the following opponents: Jose Omega in 33 moves of Scotch Game, defending champion Jess Toldoya and newcomer Edward Agravante, a 25-year-old bartender at Island Bar.
Third seed Roberto Hernandez scored his first ever win over 4th seed Menandro Manuel in 43 moves of King's Indian Defence.
Hernandez is now 1-3-2 (win-loss-draw) against Manuel, who committed a blunder on the 20th move that cost him a piece.
He bounced back from defeat and scored a win over top seed Ivan II Chess Computer.
In the other completed match, newcomer Joel Azana lost 2 games and won 2. He scored victories over Palauan Morton Sawaichi in 28 moves of a Sicilian game.
He defeated Den Canaria but lost to Cyril Montel, Jr. in another Scotch game and to Omega.
Bong Alipoon continued his winning ways by defeating Montel, Jr. He and Grefiel are the remaining undefeated players so far.
Jimmy Valenzuela scored his first win over Azana but lost his 3rd game to Agravante in the last game of the 2nd round.
