THE NEW, updated ratings of active players of the Knights and Rooks Chess Club are now being released. These will be used for ranking or seeding in the coming 2004 Open Chess tournament that will start on July 11 if the vacation of club chairman Roberto Hernandez is cut short to 33 days.

Current champion Jess Toldoya gained the highest points of +232 to climb from 12th seed to 5th seed. His new rating now is 1811 from the previous 1579.

Ivan II Chess Computer will still be the number one seed although it lost 2 points from its previous 1993 rating.

Hernandez and Menandro Manuel are still the number 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, at 1885 (plus 6 from 1879) and 1864 (plus 70 from previous 1794).

Mike Miguel, Jr. climbed from 8th seed to 4th due to his strong performance in the recently concluded 2004 Non-Masters Chess tourney. He gained 148 points and now has a 1843 rating from his previous 1695.

Cyril Montel, Jr. dropped to 6th after adding only 22 points to his old 1782 rating.

Danny Dandoy (1793), the 1st runner-up to Toldoya, improved his seeding from 9th to 7th with an improvement of 131 points from his old rating of 1662.

Mario Ramos, the Most Improved Player and the 4th runner-up finisher, has the second most gained points of 162 to climb from 14th seed to 8th seed, his best ever since 2002.

He has now 1746 from his previous 1584.

Jimmy Valenzuela dropped from 5th to 9th due to his so-so performance. His best performance this year was winning the 2nd blitz chess tourney (without chess clock!) in April 25.

Jose Omega also dropped in the seeding by gaining only 10 points. He now has 1718 and is seeded 10th from his previous 6th.

Bong Alipoon didn't finish the tournament because he had vacation in the middle of the tourney. He is now seeded 11th with 1676, 25 points less that his previous 1701 rating.

Co-host Lin de Guzman received a bonus of 100 points to improve from 1500 starting rating to 1672 and is now 12th seed.

Mariano Agustin, Jr. gained only 23 points and stayed at 13th with 1640 rating.

Nilo de Jesus lost 54 points and now at 14th spot with 1569.

INACTIVE PLAYERS WILL START WITH THEIR LAST RATING: Jun Mahor (1620), Amante Caballero (1563), Ben Ramos (1515), Tutii Joe Chilton (1510), Rolando Funa (1452), Francis Cuenco (1452) and Norbert Villanueva (1452).

Solution to last week's puzzle 1. Qc5+ Kd2 2. Qc1 mate. If 1. ... Kd3 2. Qxf2 mate.
