TOURNAMENT venue co-host. first time competitor and seeded last (15th) Lin de Guzman have won only one game prior to the 8th round of the 2004 Non-Master Chess tournament held on Sunday, February 29 at Paul Brothers Tri-M General Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal.

But it was his day as he upset 4th seed Cyril Montel, Jr. (1782 rating) in 31 moves of Sicilian Defence.

De Guzman (1500) then scored another upset later in the afternoon over 7th seed Bong Alipoon(1701) to climb 3 spots higher in the standings.

Montel, Jr. suffered another setback when he lost a winning game to 9th seed Danny Dandoy (1662). He won a knight and a pawn in the middle game but blundered away his queen a move later and unable to recover in queen and rook vs. rooks and pawns endgame.

He stays at second place with a 6-3-0 win-loss-draw record after scoring a victory over 2nd seed Roberto Hernandez (1879) in 25 moves of a Sicilian Defence.

As usual, 6th seed Jose Omega (1708) had only a few minutes to play one game. He played a one-hour match against top seed Ivan II Chess Computer and resigned after 50 moves when Ivan II was ahead by a piece and in favorable position.

In the last game of the day, Hernandez checkmated Alipoon on the 28th move of a Danish Gambit as 2 pawns were sacrificed as bait.

In return, white had a quick development of pieces and attacking chances. Alipoon was not able to castle his king to safety and had to accept the exchange.

After the game, the two players analyzed the game and it's still a win for white.

Hernandez (4-5-1) is now in 5th place while Alipoon (2-5-1) goes down from 12th to 13th spot.

Mike Miguel, Jr. (5-3-0) was present but his scheduled opponent, Jess Toldoya (3-1-1) was absent. Miguel, Jr. and Dandoy (5-3-0) are now sharing 3rd place.

In the kid's division, half of the contestants were absent and the only game played was between Chris Domingo and Ivan II Chess Computer.

Domingo opted to use the Dragon Variation of the Sicilian Defence and defeated Ivan II in 38 moves. Domingo also participated in the Elementary School Spelling Bee contest last Saturday and finished 24th out of 55 participants.

Defending champion Charles Aquino, Karen Hernandez and Michael Velarde waited for their opponents to come and were not able to play a single game.

Beginning next week, absent players will lose by default if they fail to notify the tournament director one day before the start of the games.
This will update the delayed schedules of both seniors and juniors category.

In between games, some senior players relayed their opinions of the next tournament.

Hernandez will be having a 45-day vacation starting May 29, 2004. The ciurrent tournament will be finished on April 04.

If another tournament will begin on May 2, some players will have to perform some recording of the games results and other task in continuing the tourney in the absence of Hernandez.

If this is not possible, the next tournament will start in mid-July or first week of August.

While on vacation, Hernandez will continue his Chessmate column in Tia Belau. An advance 6-week contribution will be prepared so that the column will continue uninterrupted.
