(47) CHESSMATE 21 THREE TIED FOR LEAD

SPECTATOR NOT COMPETITOR
Jojo Escapatoria, background (left), was one of the first to register in the current tourney but because of job schedule conflict, he missed the first 3 weeks and is now just an avid spectator of the game every Sunday such as this, observing the game between Jimmy Valenzuela, right, and Jess Toldoya. Looking on are current leader Menandro Manuel and Mariano 'JR' Agustin.

FORMER champion Menandro 'Boy' Manuel, 4th seed Cyril Montel, Jr. and 9th seed Danny Dandoy share the lead after 10th round of the 2004 Non-Master Chess tournament held Sunday, March 04 at Paul Brothers Tri-M General Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal.

Montel, Jr. and Dandoy won by default over Amante Caballero and Nilo de Jesus, respectively.

Manuel was absent and drew by default with Caballero for a win-loss-draw record of 6-2-2. The other 2 leaders have identical record of 7-3-0.

For Dandoy, this is the closest that he's been in 4 tournaments that he participated in. In the 2002 Open Chess tourney, he already clinch the 2nd runner-up but Mario Ramos showed up on the last day and he lost their replayed game and finished 6th instead.

If Dandoy will win his last 3 games, he has a good chance at the championship.

All other results of the 10th round were defaults except the game between Jess Toldoya (5-1-2) and Mike Miguel, Jr. (6-3-1) that ended in a draw.

Miguel, Jr. missed a winning line by exchanging queens. He had the advantage with a passed g pawn in the minor piece and pawns endgame. He is now in solo 4th place, followed by Toldoya and idle 2nd seed Roberto Hernandez (5-5-1).

OTHER RESULTS (All default draws): Bong Alipoon vs. Mariano Agustin, Jr.; Ramos vs. de Jesus and Ivan II Chess Computer vs. Alipoon.

In the kid's division, 16-year-old Michael Velarde defeated 12-year-old Chris Domingo (2-1) in their best of 3 series.

Domingo won the first game and after Velarde equalized, he almost lost his queen on the 3rd game. He made an illegal move while his queen is under attack.

After the arbiter decided to take back his move, he continued with relief and won the game with excitement. He now has a 4-4-0 record while Domingo stays at 3rd spot with 4-4-1 slate.

In the other completed game, 18-year-old Karen Gennibeth Hernandez defeated Ivan II Chess Computer in 38 moves of Four Knights Defence with the black pieces.

The use of Four Knights Defence is prohibited to junior players if they play the white pieces.

Hernandez (6-1-1) stays at 2nd while defending champion Charles Aquino (8-1-1) keeps the lead with a default win over Georby Domingo.

OTHER RESULTS WERE DEFAULT DRAWS: Jayrome Soriano (3-1-3 vs. Ricky Camacho (0-5-3) and Ivan II Chess Computer (2-2-5) vs. Soriano.

THIS SUNDAY'S PAIRINGS: (Absent players will lose by default)
Hernandez vs. Soriano; Camacho vs. Velarde; Aquino vs. Camacho; Velarde vs. Sorinao and G. Domingo vs. Soriano.

11th ROUND PAIRINGS FOR SENIORS: (First name to play white) Manuel vs. Montel, Jr.; de Jesus vs. Miguel, Jr.; Jose Omega vs. Dandoy; Ramos vs. Toldoya; Mariano Agustin, Jr. vs. Jimmy Valenzuela; Ivan II vs. Toldoya; Ramos vs. Valenzuela and Ivan II vs. Ramos.

Absent players will lose by default. Please call the Chairman at 488-3694 if you can't make it.

A player suggested that if the next tournament will be under the sponsorship of TFCP, it will be using the active time control or 30 minutes for each player to finish the game and the tourney will only last for 3 weeks. The other chess tournaments will use longer time control. It will be under the sponsorship of Knights and Rooks Chess Club.
