(48) CHESSMATE 22 WILL IT BE MANUEL OR TOLDOYA?

BATTLE OF 2 CHAMPIONS
Fireworks are always expected whenever two former champions clash on the board such as this match where 2003 Open champion Menandro 'Boy' Manuel, left, proved too touch a nut to crack for 2003 Seniors and Juniors open champion Roberto Hernandez who failed to defend his title when he lost in this crucial match last Feb. 22, 2004.

TWELFTH seed Jess Toldoya, the only player with the least loss, drew with top seed Ivan II Chess Computer in 116 moves and won by default over Mario Ramos to climb to 2nd place after the 11th round of the 2004 Non-Master Chess tournament held on Sunday, March 21 at Paul Brothers Tri-M General Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal.
Third seed Menandro Manuel kept the lead after beating 4th seed Cyril Montel, Jr. in their French Defence game. He now has a win-loss-draw record of 7-2-2.

Toldoya has a 6-1-3 to tie Mike Miguel, Jr. (7-3-1), who won by default over Nilo de Jesus, who has been absent for 6 consecutive weeks.
Danny Dandoy (7-4-0) lost to Jose Omega (5-6-0) in another French Defence and mathematically lost his chance for the championship. He is now sharing 4th place with Montel, Jr. (7-4-0).
In the last completed game of the day, defending champion and 2nd seed Roberto Hernandez (6-5-1) defeated Jimmy Valenzuela (4-7-0) in 79 moves of Danish Gambit.
On the 8th, 9th and 12th move, Hernandez waited for Valenzuela to press his time clock before making his move. The latter didn't learned his lesson in th 1st where he lost about 6 minutes in his time clock.
It is a strategy in chess that if your opponent forgets to press his clock, you shouldn't make a move until he realize his mistake.
Hernandez did the same thing to Omega in the 9th round. 15 years ago, Hernandez lost a game to a good player who psyched him up after he lost 12 minutes of his time because he forgot to press his time clock.
It was a Non-Masters chess tournament held in Cubao, Quezon City in the Philippines where the eventual champion, Rolando Nolte, is now a National Master.
OTHER RESULTS WERE ALL DEFAULT DRAWS EXCEPT VALENZUELA'S WIN OVER RAMOS (3-5-3) --- Amante Caballero (0-5-5) vs. Ramos; Bong Alipoon (3-5-4) vs. de Jesus (1-6-4) and Ramos vs. Ivan II Chess Computer (4-2-4) were all declared default draws.
In the kid's division, all games were default wins and draws.
Former champion Jayrome Soriano (3-4-3) did not show up and lost 3 games to Karen Gennibeth Hernandez (7-1-1), Michael Velarde (6-4-0) and Georby Domingo (1-7-2), who won his first game of the tourney.
Ricky Camacho (0-8-3) lost 3 games also by default to Velarde, current leader Charles Aquino (9-1-1) and Chris Domingo (5-4-1).
With 3 rounds left in the tournament, the 12th round pairings are very crucial to Manuel, Miguel, Jr. and Toldoya, whose 3 of his four remaining matches are against the top seeds.
Meanwhile, Miguel, Jr. borrowed Ivan II Chess Computer so he can prepare against it in his 12th round schedule. It is a smart thing to do against a formidable opponent. It will cost him just $2.00 to borrow Ivan II for a week.
SENIORS 12TH ROUND PAIRINGS (First name to play white) Ivan II Chess Computer vs. Miguel, Jr.; Alipoon vs. Dandoy; Montel, Jr. vs. Toldoya; Mariano Agustin, Jr. (3-3-2) vs. Ivan II; Valenzuela vs. Agustin, Jr.; Toldoya vs. Manuel; Omega vs. Caballero and co-host Lin de Guzman (3-8-0) vs. Agustin, Jr.
ABSENT PLAYERS WILL LOSE BY DEFAULT. PLEASE NOTIFY THE CHAIRMAN AT TELEPHONE NUMBER 488-3694.

Solution to last week's puzzle:
1. Qf6 (Giving away the queen for a bishop) Bxf6 2. gxf6! (not 2. exf6 because of 2. ... Qxg5 and it is mate in 4 not 3) 2. ... Kf8 3. Rh8 mate.
