(1381) TAIWANESE 2008 OLYMPIAD PLAYER PRACTICED WITH ME (TBN-May 15, 2017)

PALAU VS. TAIWAN FRIENDLY BLITZ GAME
Roberto Hernandez, left, met a Chinese-Taipei Chess Team member in the 2008 WCO in Dresden, Germany Lin,Chung-Yu during the final day of 2017 PBCC at Ernguul Park. Mr. Lin is in a visit with the Taiwanese Friendship Fleet as a sailor. It’s the 13th visit of this fleet in Palau. In the background are (L-R) Tito Cabunagan, Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and eventual champion Rustum Cabuso.

    TAIWANESE 2008 OLYMPIAD
                   PLAYER
         PRACTICED WITH ME

AFTER the conclusion of 2017 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, buses of Taiwanese sailors are crowding Bethlehem Park. Some of them are watching the last (9th) round with one of them practicing with Angelo Salvadora, who later asked me to try the young sailor at 3:30pm of May 07, 2017.

I lost my first 2 games to him with the 3rd one postponed because their bus is leaving. I gave him my card and he mentioned to me that he played for the Chinese-Taipei Chess Team in the 2008 World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany. I proudly told him that I represented Palau in 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia; 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 Olympiads in Russia, Turkey, Norway and Azerbaijan respectively being Board 1 in Turkey and Norway Olympiads. He said he is Board 4 in 2008.

He said they will be still in Palau till Monday, May 08. Before playing piano at Palau Royal Resort at dinner time, the Waves Restaurant is full of sailors from Taiwanese Friendship Fleet. Before playing, I asked one sailor if he knows the name Lin, Chung-Yu as shown to me by that chess playing sailor. He doesn’t know him. Even the last one that I asked, who had photo session with me, doesn’t know him either even if I showed him more than half dozen photos.

In the resumption of play of the 2017 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, I drew with Rustum Cabuso in Round 6 and lost to top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. in Rd. 7 and won the last 2 games vs. Joan Gemota and Angie Parrado respectively to finish with 7.5 points.

Tito Cabunagan spoiled Cyril’s quest for another blitz title when he upset the latter to set the tiebreak for first place between me and Rustum. We cannot use the first tiebreak—Direct Encounter or winner over the other because we drew our game. But in the Sonneborn-Berger system, Rustum prevailed with 28.50 to my 26.50.

Cyril and Tito are tied at 3rd place with 7 points each but the 2nd tiebreak again settled the issue with Cyril’s 23.50 to Tito’s 23.00 followed by Manuel Mahor, Jr.’s 5 pts. Angie Parrado and Angelo Salvadora are tied at 6th-7th spot with Angie’s 8.00 edged out Angelo’s 7.00.

10th seed Angelica Magno was the surprise of the event, scoring 1.5 points, half point better than Palau’s 2nd Woman National Master (WNM) Baby Edna Mission to finish at 8th, one spot higher that Mission. 9th seed Joan Gemota drew her first game with Magno but lost her last 8 games to be the cellar dweller with .5 point.

The Awarding for the Top 3 Finishers and Palau Chess Federation’s Board Meeting didn’t push through because PCF President Eric Ksau Whipps is still off island. He arrived just in time to fetch Jamie Kenmure at the airport for the latter’s Arbiters’ Seminar that will be start on May 14-18, 2017 at Mason’s Hardware premises.

The following are the confirmed participants—1. Roberto Hernandez 2. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. 3. Tito Cabunagan 4. Angelica Parrado 5. Paquito Suringa, Jr. 6. Dennis Gonzales 7. Manuel Mahor, Jr. 8. Eugene Labarda 9. Rustum Cabuso 10. Angelo Salvadora 11. Baby Edna Mission 12. Gladys Anne Paloma 13. Neph Macasaet 14. Joan Gemota 15. Joel Gemota 16. Angelica Magno 17. Joy Flores Whipps.
