  HAVING FUN WITH SIMUL, BLITZ
 & MEETING AT BETHLEHEM PARK

THE cross tables of the recently concluded 2013 Palau National Chess Championship were submitted to FIDE by Palau Rating Officer Jamie Kenmure. A total of 47 Palau chess players and their new international ratings will be published at www.fide.com on November 01, 2013.
Some players gathered at Bethlehem Park on Sunday, Oct. 13 for practice, blitz chess tilt, meeting and simultaneous exhibition by Palau top chess player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. against Jun Mahor, the 2013 PNCC champion of Reserves Division, Eugene Labarda, 4th placer and Eugenio Pastrana, 4th place in the Top 12 Division.
Cyril handily defeated the 3 players where no chess clock was used. The rule is that every time Cyril moves, his opponent must make his move after Cyril returns to him. In the early part of their games, the 3 players can’t help themselves moving immediately.
After the simul, a blitz chess tourney was organized with $1.00 registration fee to buy drinks for the players (soda). The players drew the numbers with Jose Celiz at no. 1, followed by Remrel Dizon, Jun Mahor, Cyril, Gene Pastrana and Roberto Hernandez.
Jose wins 4 straight to take the title even if he lost his last game to Roberto by ‘sacrificing’ his king. One of the rules in Palau blitz chess tourney is that every time you attack your opponent’s king, you must say the word “check”. The time control is 5 minutes for each player with 3 seconds increment.
Cyril took the 2nd spot after winning the tiebreak (direct encounter) over Roberto. They both have 3-2 win-loss record. Gene have an even night by winning 2, losing 2 and drawing one for 4th place again! Jun Mahor edged out Remrel by half a point with 1-3-1 slate to Remrel’s 1-4-0.
The 6 players moved to the lighted area when it gets dark. Jeff Balbalosa and Angie Parrado keep practicing even in the dark.
During the meeting, the first issue that was tackled was Jeff’s complain that the rapid time format was used on the last day of 2013 PNCC. After some explanations, it was decided to stick with the original format at the start of the tournament.
The laziness in writing or updating the moves of players was also tackled especially about Gene Pastrana’s inability to update his score sheet during his games against Rustum Cabuso and Cyril.
The first tournament of 2014 will be rapid and Swiss system. The players who cannot play on Saturday or Sunday are requested not to join. Swiss system can be played with as many players as possible with the top seed player playing the player in the middle of the ranking in the first round.
During the 2nd round, the winners will play against the winners of the 1st round, losers vs. losers or against players with the closest results.
In a designated game, the player who didn’t make it will lose by default. Three default losses will automatically disqualify player/s.
Cyril suggested that the registration will need to increase to $25.00 so that players will think twice of being disqualified after paying that much.
The 2013 Palau Invitational Chess Championship was also discussed. Mr. Jan Berglund has invited a player from Kenya and India to participate in the said event. Their ratings are just above 2003 which mean that they don’t have to win all their games and it will increase the rating level of Palau players. The tentative date is last week of November to first week of December 2013, the date where Mr. Berglund is coming to Palau.
REGULAR SUNDAY PRACTICES, BLITZ TOURNEYS, MEETINGS, SIMULS AND SOCIALIZING WILL BE DONE UNTIL THE NEXT TOURNAMENT – THE 2013 PALAU INVITATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
         Solution to last week’s puzzle: 1. Bg6+! Kxg6 2. Rg4+ Kf5 3. Qh5 mate. If 2. … Kf7 then 3. Rg7 mate.
This week’s puzzle: White to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
