(586) IDLE WEEK OF NCC (TBN-Aug. 15-21, 2008)








NOT A single game was played in the resumption of adversary in the ongoing 2008 Palau National Chess Championship as players have conflict in their schedules on Sunday afternoon, August 10 at Jean's Boutique and Store.

Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic arrived at 5:00 pm and not enough time for a match with 4th seed Roberto Hernandez, the musician of Palau Royal Resort, as he had to work at 6:00 pm. He played with blitz games with venue host Gene Pastrana and Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich. He won all his games against the two.

The chess tournament of Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) will start on Monday, August 18 at the church premises at 9:00 pm. Some of the format that will be changed is the touch move rule and writing chess moves.

It was suggested that in the classification round, writing chess notation is not mandatory. They will be strict only in the round-robin finals of Class A and B.

Practice is now in full swing with their Pastor Eric showing some toughness against the current chairman of King Royals Chess Club of PRR Abraham 'Abe' Francisco.

The tournament moderator Paquito Suringa practice rapid chess against Jaime Guevarra at Dormitory 1 of PRR. Suringa and Francisco are the top seeds of the tourney initiated by Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino.

It was postponed earlier this year and now it will be held along with other games such as scrabble, dama (Chinese checkers) and dart, where most players are joining.

IT SEEMS THAT THE FINAL ROSTER OF THE PALAU CHESS TEAM TO THE WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD IN DRESDEN, GERMANY IN NOVEMBER 12-25, 2008 WILL BE COMPOSED OF PALAU'S TOP PLAYER MENANDRO 'BOY' MANUEL (Board 1), MANNY NEDIC (Board 2), ROBERTO HERNANDEZ (Board 3), CYRIL MONTEL, JR. (Board 4) and reserve GENE PASTRANA.

The organizer of the Olympiad will provide the free board and lodging of the team that will included Jan Berglund as Delegate/Coach. The FIDE Congress will also be held during the event.

Mr. Berglund can have anybody not to play on that day to attend with him in the meeting. He is expected to come to Palau to train the Palau team, which is rated 148th in the world just ahead of British Virgin Islands and Bahamas.
