2013 BLITZ CHESS TILT

AFTER 3 weeks of blitz chess competition, Roberto Hernandez, Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and Tito Cabunagan lead the field of 18 players with 8 wins each after the completion of games last Sunday, May 26 at Bethlehem Park.

But Roberto has the least number of loss – 1 game (to Nilo de Jesus), while Cyril lost 3 games (to Tito, Nilo and Paquito Suringa, Jr.). Tito had 5 losses – to Dennis Gonzales, Cyril, Roberto (2 games) and to Remrel Dizon, where he should have been swept if Remrel captured Tito’s queen without compensation in their 2ndgame. In their first game, Tito lost by time forfeit when Roberto, the chief arbiter, saw his time expired.

Gene Pastrana, being active again, was able to play 8 games and won only 1 game – to Nilo and was swept by the top 3 seeds – Cyril, Roberto and Tito.

Suringa did better in 8 games, winning 2 games over Remrel and Cyril and was swept by Tito and Jose Celiz, the leader in the early round and the remaining undefeated player. He didn’t play last Sunday.

A newcomer, John Joseph Fabiola, joined the field and matched Suringa’s output by winning 2 games –over Nilo and Dennis. He was swept by Cyril and Roberto.

Eugene Labarda paid his registration fee of $5.00 and played one game, losing to Nilo, who is in solo 4th place with a 5-8-1 win-loss-draw slate and has played the most number of games at 14.

STANDINGS OF PLAYERS – 5th, Jose Celiz (4-0-0) 6th, Dennis Gonzales (2-2-1), 7th, Remrel Dizon (2-3-0) 8th, Paquito Suringa, Jr. (2-6-0), 9th, John Joseph Fabiola (2-6-0), 10th, Gene Pastrana (1-7-0), 11th, Eugene Labarda (0-1-0).

In the combined women’s and juniors division, Destiny Sisior let her overwhelming advantage slips away when her sister Angelil was stalemated and escaped with a draw in their first game. Angelil won their 2nd game to lead the field with 1.5 points.

Top seed Angie Parrado played her first game against her daughter Destiny and prevailed using the time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment for her and 10 minutes + 3 seconds increment to Destiny.

Three cases of illegal moves were committed by players – one is a bishop move that was pinned by a rook. He was instructed to make any other move except that bishop. The other one is the same case but with the queen this time that resulted in the exchange of queen. The 3rd one was committed by Pastrana in his game against Roberto, where he moved the knight horizontally instead of L-shape move.

Herbert, the new worker at P. I. E Printing, will join the tournament after registering to Roberto early this week. Jeff Balbalosa, Gonzalo Escapatoria and Mohammad Manik Hossain didn’t make it last Sunday. Manik said he will try again this Sunday. He was offered by Roberto, Paquito and Tito to play their games in any time and place that they are available—Palau Royal Resort, Tito’s residence, Bethlehem Park or in his staff house in Airai.

The other players who haven’t played a single game yet are Miguel Hilario, Jr., Manuel Mahor, Jr., Glen Navarosa and Rafael Paloma. Herbert will replace any of the four if they will not confirm to the organizer about their intention to play in the last 3 weeks of the tournament.

The 2013 Palau Blitz Chess Championship will conclude on June 16, 2013. In this double round-robin event, each player must play 34 games – an average of 11 games per week in the last 3 weeks. Un-played games will be declared as losses to the players not present in the last day.

Roberto will be having a vacation from June 21-July 12, 2013 in Philippines 5 days after the conclusion of the ongoing blitz chess championship which will be FIDE rated. The World Chess Federation (FIDE) has different rating now for standard, rapid and blitz.

Solution to last week’s puzzle: (It’s black to move and not white) 1. … Qh4+ 2. g3 Qxg3+!! 3. hxg3 Bxg3 mate. This week’s puzzle: White to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
