WHEN somebody is losing a game of chess and was able to draw that game, he is said to have escaped with a draw.
That happened twice in the 7th week of the 2005 Rapid Chess Tournament held Sunday, December 04, 2005 and sponsored by Helena Yoichi and Gene Pastrana of Jean's Boutique.
Fourth seed Cyril Montel, Jr. had only a king and a pawn against a queen and a king of Felix Lapitan when he was stalemated by the over-confident Lapitan.
They played their 2nd game right away and Montel, Jr. won this time and won 3 more to move up in the standings and dislodged Lapitan at 2nd place.
He trounced newcomer Jess Gomez, Pastrana and Francis 'Sno' Temaungil, who lost all of his 7 games to Gomez (2 games), Dennis Gonzales (2 games), William Blasquino and Jimmy Valenzuela.
Meanwhile, Morton Sawaichi is very much ahead in his game against Pastrana. He had a king and a queen against Pastrana's lone king.
When he moved his king for force checkmate, it resulted in a statlemate. Many amateur games have the same results due to over confidence. Some masters' advise is to think longer when you are ahead.
In a special game held on Wednesday, November 30 at Jean's Boutique, top seed Jose Omega lost to Ivan II Chess Computer but scored a win and a draw over Pastrana.
Omega was given special games and day to catch up. He climbed from 11th to 4th place after wins over Roberto Hernandez, Gerry Sermeno and Flavin Andres (2 games).
Frontrunner Menandro Manuel collected 4 more wins to keep the lead. He nipped Omega, Joel Azana (2 games) and Lapitan.
Latecomer Bong Alipoon, the 2nd seed, scored 4.5 in five games and became the only undefeated player so far.
He clobbered Valenzuela (2 games), Gonzales (2 games) and drew with Blasquino in his first game.
OTHER RESULTS OF A VERY HECTIC 7TH WEEK THAT LASTED TIL 8:15 PM:
Lapitan d. Azana; Hernandez whipped Sawaichi in 29 moves of Center Counter Game; Azana drew with Blasquino and Lapitan; Gonzales d. Sawaichi; Pastrana drew with Ivan II Chess Computer; Azana d. Blasquino and drew their 2nd game.
After the last game was completed, the remaining players and officers of Knights and Rooks Chess Club held a meeting. The collected money ($293.00) for FIDE membership fee was turned over to secretary/treasurer Pastrana including the fund from registration fees.
The Christmas party was discussed and the sponsorship of Socio to hold a chess tournament in their premises every Sunday.
The current 2005 Rapid Chess tournament will not be finished before Christmas. There will be a Christmas and New Year break and the remaining rounds will be played on January 08 and onwards.
Solution to last week's puzzle: 1. ...Nd2 2. Rxd2 Rxe1 3. Kxe1 Rg1 mate.
