(956) TROPHIES MADE AND DESIGNED BY HIRM ISECHAL (TBN-Dec. 12-19, 2003)

EXTRA TROPHY DONATED BY ARTIST HIRM ISECHAL
The 2003 Senior and Junior Chess Tournament is supposed to have trophies only for the top 4 finishers in each category (Senior and Junior) but storyboard artist Hirm Isechal, 2nd from right, donated an extra trophy for Rodnnie Dizon, squatting in the middle, that make all the kids happy and appreciative to Hirm.

     TROPHIES MADE AND DESIGNED
                 BY HIRM ISECHAL

TWO months before the final day of the 2003 Senior and Junior Chess Tournament being held every Sunday at C & N Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Services premises, Roberto Hernandez surveyed the maker and designer of the storyboard-like trophies to be given away to the top 4 finishers in the Senior and Junior divisions.

Somebody suggested that there are inmates at Koror City Jail that make storyboard-like trophies to make this awarding a little bit different than the previous tournaments.

Roberto was able to talk first to Maryann Flava, a Filipino beautician who was convicted of drug trafficking and the girlfriend of Edgar Igamen, who came to Palau at the same date as Roberto -- February 04, 1992.

At the Continental Airlines on that date, Roberto and Edgar are seated next to each other. Edgar is not much familiar with filling-up the arrival form so Roberto helped him to just copy what he had written on the form.

The funny thing is... Edgar copied even the employer of Roberto -- Palau singer Elena Sutton!

Since childhood, Roberto is very helpful. During exams in High School, he lets his friends/classmates copy his answers, especially those who didn't review for the exam. In many occasions, they even exchange their test papers when Roberto has finished early and he will be the one to fill it up because many of them write/copy very slow.

Roberto and his younger brothers Romeo and Bernardo studied in the same school in their high school days -- Hagonoy Institute.

There is an entrance exam in which Roberto and Romeo are filling up a form. Roberto is in 3rd year and Romeo is in the 1st year.

There is one question there that Romeo is not sure how to answer ... "Sex".

He asked Roberto, "Ka Obet (Older brother Obet, nickname of Roberto), what will I write here in "Sex"?

ROBERTO JOKINGLY ANSWERED, "YOU WRITE THERE "MANIAC".

Trusting Roberto, Romeo started to write "Ma..." already when Roberto stopped him, "No, it's Male. Since you wrote already "Ma", just add "le".

Maryann is also busy even inside the jail. Her family and kids didn't know that she was in jail because she still continue to send money for them because she's earning by making storyboards that she sells to tourists. Her biggest payment received for her "work" is $75.00 from American tourist.

She also do some manicure and pedicure inside the jail for extra income. Roberto sat beside her and Edgar when there is a baseball game during the 1997 Micronesian Games held in Palau. Inmates are allowed to watch games or work outside and come back at night time in the jail.

Maryann can't make 8 storyboard-like trophies by herself so she suggested to Roberto to try to convince Hirm Isechal to make those but Roberto should provide the wood and the shoe polish that is being used to make the wood shiny.

Roberto and Hirm agreed that he can finish it on time for the awarding on Dec. 14, 2003. Nilo de Jesus, the venue host and trophies sponsor, will pay for those trophies.

When Roberto gets the trophies from Hirm on Dec. 13, he was surprised that Hirm made an extra one for the 5th placer in the Junior division as a donation from him.

Another surprise is that Hirm is going out of jail at that time (Dec. 13) and he can attend the awarding ceremony!
