OMEGA, VERGARA, PASTRANA & FLOR   HERNANDEZ   ARE AMBASSADOR'S CUP CHAMPIONS

IT WAS AN exciting final day of the inaugural Ambassador Marino Cup Rapid Chess tournament that it took extra game in the rated division to determine the champion and two crucial last games in the unrated division to finally crown the winners of the event held Sunday, July 09 at the Embassy of the Philippines.

Rated division's top seed Jose Omega (9-1-0 win-loss-draw record) and 3rd seed Roberto Hernandez (9-1-0) were tied at first place after trouncing their last two opponents.

They will split the $300.00 according to the no tiebreaker rule for the cash prize. They played one rubber match game for the championship trophy and Omega prevailed in their Sicilian Defence (Najdorf Variation) game when  Hernandez overlooked a mate in four combination after Omega castled in the queenside.

Manny Nedic (8-2-0) also won his last two games to settle at 3rd spot and $75.00 while 2nd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. (7-3-0) outwitted his last 3 opponents to finished 4th and $50.00.

Jess Toldoya (5-5-0) lost  3 crucial games against Felix Lapitan (2-8-0), Montel and Hernandez. He won by default over Morton Sawaichi (1-9-0) and forged a tie with Gene Pastrana (5-5-0). They will split the $25.00 cash prize for 5th place.

Other players final standings were 7th Dennis Gonzales (4-5-1), 8th Craig Dittrich (2-7-1), 9th Joel Azana (2-8-0) 10th Lapitan and 11th Morton Sawaichi.

In the beginner's division, 3 players were fighting it out till the last game. The crucial game was between 14-year old Jayrome Soriano (6-4-0) and Manny Kimpo (4-5-1), who is donating the 4 trophies of the champions in each division.

Soriano needed a win to clinch the title but he lost and opened the door to Vincent Vergara (7-3-0) and the waiting Val Vidar (6-3-1). If in the last game of the tournament, Vergara had lost, Vidar will be the champion and Soriano and Vergara will share 2nd spot.

Vergara prevailed in a game watch by the remaining players and observers. He will receive $100.00, Vidar -$75.00, Soriano - $50.00 and Kimpo - $25.00.

Jun Rodriguez finished 5th at 4-6-0 and Palau Chess Federation Chairman Francis 'Sno' Temaungil completed the cast at 2-8-0.

In the junior division, Ken Pastrana, Gene's son, was the only undefeated player in the tourney with a clean 4-0-0 slate followed by Jielton Cabierte (2-2-0) and Arnel Corono (0-4-0).

Due to the very low turnout of players in their division, their cash prize were divided into $20.00, $10.00 and $5.00 and the remaining $115.00 will be added to the fund of Knights and Rooks Chess Club.

In the women's division, it's already wrapped up in the first week as Flor Hernandez (8-1-0), Juvy Bulan (7-2-0), Minda Roa (4-4-0), Luz Sembrano (0-4-4) and Agnes Espina (0-4-4) completed the standings.

The National Chess Championship will resume the second round this Sunday, July 16 at Jean's Boutique and Store premises and the awarding of trophies and cash prizes will be announced later.
