CHANGE OF DATE -- 2016 CHESS
         OLYMPIAD IN AZERBAIJAN

THE DATE of 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan has recently been move 17 days earlier than its original date of Sept. 17-30, 2016. It is now on Sept. 01-14 with the FIDE Congress to start on the 4th of Sept. that coincides with the Olympiad. FIDE Congress, Chess Olympiad and election of new FIDE President is being done every 4 years—2014 Tromso, Norway, 2010 Khanty-Mansiysk, Russsia, 2006 Torino, Italy, 2002 Bled, Slovenia and 2018 Batumi, Georgia.
World Chess Olympiad is being held every 2 years with non-election years in 2000 Istanbul, Turkey; 2004 Calvia, Spain; 2008 Dresden, Germany; 2012 Istanbul, Turkey again and this year’s Baku, Azerbaijan, where there will be an election of which country will host the non-election year of 2020 to be contested by Tokyo, Japan and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 2014 Tromso, Norway World Chess Olympiad was also move from November to Aug. 01-14 while the 2012 Istanbul Olympiad kept its date intact – Aug. 27-Sept. 10. Likewise with the 2010 Olympiad in Russia –Sept. 21- Oct. 04, which was the best-hosted Olympiad ever with the Twin Olympiad hotel built just for the Olympiad.
The most ‘late’ World Chess Olympiad was the 2008 Dresden, WCO that was held in Nov. 12-25 which is almost winter time. Maybe it’s too close for the 2008 Summer Olympics that was held in Beijing, China on 08-08-08 (Aug. 08, 2008), which conspicuously set for what China believed as lucky numbers as number 8 has infinity or without end.
The change of date in Baku has affected the schedule of Palau Chess Federation President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps and he will not make it because of earlier commitment. His Delegate position will be tackled in the meeting of Board Members of PCF on Tuesday, March 01. Minister Baklai Temengil and Palau National Olympic Committee President Frank Kyota might not be available for Head of Delegation position because the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is also a date that is too close.
Tutii Joe Chilton visited the opening round of 2016 Palau Blitz Chess Championship at Bethlehem Park on Valentine’s Day and he might be available for the position. Also to be tackled in the Board Meeting is the inclusion of WNM Angelica Parrado-Sisior to the Board as CM Bernardo Garcia has left Palau for good. It is also a good inclusion of a woman player to the board. Maybe there will be Women’s team to Baku in Angie, Bheng, Joan Gemota, Roxanne Parco and Angelil Sisior.
The 2nd week of 2016 Palau Blitz Chess Championship was held at Surangel Campaign Headquarters at Mason’s Hardware premises with Roberto Hernandez having an equal day of one win (over Josef Karlo Moyet), one draw (against Tito Cabunagan) and a loss to top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. in just 7 moves of Dutch Defense, where Roberto didn’t anticipate the ‘trap’ that Cyril had studied against the Dutch, the pet defense of Roberto. The moves: 1. d4 f5 2. h3 Nf6 3. g4 fxg4 4. hxg4 Nxg4 5. Qd3 Nf6 6. Rxh7 Rxh7 7. Qg6 mate.
The penultimate and final rounds will be held either at Bethlehem Park or at Headquarters again on Feb. 28, depending on the availability of the venues. It is also the date of The Filipino Community in Palau election of officers for the year 2016-2018 where 2 top chess players of PCF are running for office as Vice President and Board Member—Hernandez and Baby Edna “Bheng” Mission respectively.
Medals will be given to the top 3 finishers after the last round has been played.

Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3826: 1. Ne5+! Nxe5 2. Be8+ Kf8 3. Bg6 mate.

This week’s puzzle No. 3827: White to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
