(1061) 2005 REGULAR CHESS TILT ROUND 8 -- ONLY 4 GAMES PLAYED (TBN-March 11-18, 2005)

THE HISTORIC FIRST GAME OF HERNANDEZ VS. NEDIC
Newcomer Manuel Nedic, right, plays his first tournament game vs. Roberto Hernandez in the 8th round of 2005 Regular Chess Tournament. Nedic is an avid reader of Chess Mate and practices chess by solving the puzzles in that column. He lives in the far end part of Palau -- Ngeremlengui State. Watching the opening moves of that game were (R-L) Jimmy Valenzuela, Bong Alipoon, Susan Andres, Gene Pastrana and an unknown Palauan guy.               (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

   2005 REGULAR CHESS TILT -- ROUND 8
          (Only 4 games were played)

THE 2005 REGULAR Chess Tournament has many firsts in terms of participants, format, venue and rook/knight odd for junior players.

Round 1 has 9 games played including the only 2 junior participants (Christopher Domingo and 2004 Rapid Chess junior champ Em-R de Vera), who played in Best-of-3 format.

In Round 2, they were beaten by Jose Omega despite the knight odd, and Menandro Manuel (rook odd) respectively.

Morton Sawaichi also defeated De Vera with a knight odd, in the same 13-game 2nd round.

There are 3 newcomers in this tournament: Israeli Liam Bornovski, Ronald Maomay and Manuel Nedic, who is struggling with transportation as he is living in the very far end provincial state of Ngeremlengui, which is more or less 40 miles from the tournament site.

Ivan II Chess Computer was also fielded in and played in another 9-game 3rd round (white) against Nedic, which was won by the latter.

Nedic won again in the most busiest week so far (16 games), the 4th round, against 2nd timer Marcial Rodriguez, but lost to Dennis Gonzales in the same round.

Nedic didn't play in the 5th round (Feb. 13, 2005) but in the 6th round, he drew with top seeds Menandro Manuel and Cyril Montel, Jr. It is also in this round that Bornovski played a best of three series against De Vera, in which the latter prevails with a 0-2 score.

In Round 7 (Feb. 27, 2005), Nedic defeated Lin de Guzman but has to adjourned his game against Jose Omega due to schedule conflict. It will be resumed on April 10, 2005! Yes, we allowed this flexibility to accommodate ALL players.

We also allow special games like the 7th round game between Mario-Ramos vs. Marcial Rodriguez, which took place on Feb. 21, 2005 (Monday) at their staff house, as they live in the same place in another very far state of Ngchesar. Their game ended in a draw.

In Round 8, the only games played were the Manuel-Montel, Jr. match (1-0), Gonzales-Montel, Jr. (0-1), Sawaichi-Nedic (0-1), and the featured game Hernandez-Nedic.
