(1047) Cyril Nails 3rd Plum; 2015--The Most Hectic PCF Calendar Year (Locally and Internationally)TBN-Aug. 24, 2015

:    CHESSBOARD MAGICIAN
                      How did Tito Cabunagan, left, manage to win his game against Danilo Briones of Guam? He is down by a pawn and a rook on the 15th move and salvaged a win on the 52nd move. He’s being labeled as “lucky” in Palau but “CHESSBOARD MAGICIAN in Guam! WHATEVER! His charisma in person and on the chessboard is the same!

              CYRIL NAILS 3rd PLUM;
      2015-- THE MOST HECTIC P. C. F.
                  CALENDAR YEAR
        (Locally and Internationally)

PALAU Chess Federation has a total of 9 tournaments scheduled for the year 2015 (locally and internationally). It’s the most ever. In 2002, there were only 2 and in the succeeding years, at least 3 major tournaments that includes the National Championships that started in 2006.
The coming 2015 PNCC is the 10th national chess championship that was moved to the first week of Oct. and to conclude on the first week of Dec. to avoid Christmas rush like in the last year’s PNCC. The adjustment in date is to accommodate National Master (NM) Tito Cabunagan and National Instructor (NI) Jeff Balbalosa, who will be participating in the 8th event in PCF Calendar, the Datu Arthur Tan Malaysian Open (DATMO) in Kuala Lumpur in September.
NM,NI Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. nailed his 3rd championship in a row by winning the 2014-2015 PNCC and got his $175.00 cash prize and a trophy that was awarded in Jan. 25, 2015; the 2015 Blitz Chess Championship ($125.00 cash + trophy); and the recently concluded 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship ($100.00 + trophy).
It’s the most exciting final day in Palau rapid chess history. Cyril needs to beat NI Dennis Gonzales for if he would lose it and Jeff would win over Candidate Master (CM) Bernardo Garcia, then Jeff will be the champion. Another twist is if Cyril and Jeff lost, and Developmental Instructor (DI) Paquito Suringa, Jr. would win over Nilo de Jesus and NM, FIDE Instructor (FI) Roberto Hernandez would win also against John Mark Tamayo, thus there would be a triple tie for the crown.
Suringa might win the title via tiebreak as he has beaten Cyril in the penultimate round. What happened was Cyril won, Jeff won by default when Garcia didn’t show up, Paquito won over Nilo and Roberto nipped Tamayo in 30 moves of Queen’s Fianchetto Defence (Nimzovich Defence) to tie Paquito at 3rd spot. After the Bulchoz, Median and Number of wins tiebreak were applied, Hernandez clinched his 3rd runner-up plums (1st runner-up in 2014-2015 PNCC and 3rd as well in 2015 Palau Blitz Chess Tilt.)
THE MOVES:   Hernandez, Roberto (1858) - Tamayo, John Mark [B00]

            Cabunagan and Angelica Parrado withdrew from 2015 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Sydney, Australia in July 4-10, 2015 --2 weeks prior to Roberto’s vacation in the Philippines (June 02-23). With more than a month before it, the last possible replacements are Paquito and Felix Oling. But both were not allowed to go by the management of Palau Royal Resort due to the hotel’s renovation in Paquito’s case and schedule conflict on Felix.
            But Cabunagan was able to participate in the 2015 Guam International and finished 7th being seeded 7th. He defeated FIDE Master (FM) Ignatius Leong, Noel Moguel, Danilo Briones and Victor Shiliang Wen. He lost to top seed GM Darwin Laylo, 2nd seed Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre, Guam’s top player Efren Onofre Manuel and Peter Mafnas. He drew with Joseph Caluag in the 8th round.
            AND CURRENTLY, PALAU IS REPRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2015 World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad in Mongolia, with the Sisior family participating—Angie as coach/trainer, her 3 daughters Destiny, Angelil and Kyarii Sisior at Board 1, 2, and 3. Their father Harvey Sisior completes the line-up. The event is being held from Aug. 19-29.
            The next tournament will be held on Sept. 13, 20 and 27. The top 3 finishers in this event will join the Palau top 7 (Roberto, Cyril, Tito, Bernard, Jeff, Dennis and Paquito) in the Top 10 Division of 2015 PNCC. The rest will form the Reserves (or Class B). There’s a separate Division for Women and Junior.
            The possible contestants in this non-FIDE rated event are 1. Felix Oling 2. Allan Alcid 3. Manuel Mahor, Jr. 4. Arnolfo Inres 5. Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr. 6. Nilo de Jesus 7. Sofronio “Pons” Mahor 8. Glen Navarroza 9. Eugene Labarda 10. John Mark Tamayo 11. Josef Karlo Moyet 12. Neph Macasaet.
