A NEW CHAPTER WITH MR. UEHARA
AND FAMILY
The last time that the Uehara family visited Palau was in
October 2014 after Roberto Hernandez and 10 other Palau Chess Players
represented Palau in the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway from Aug.
01-14.
When
they have their dinner at Waves Restaurant, Roberto is about to play piano at
7pm and the Uehara family is about to leave. Mr. Uehara said, “We will see you
again tomorrow.”
Roberto
prepared for them some gifts from Norway – a specially crafted glass and saucer
from 2016 World Chess Olympiad host Baku, Azerbaijan; a ‘dolphin’ necklace
which is the gift to every opponent of Palau chess players; and a ball pen from
2018 World Chess Olympiad host Batumi, Georgia.
When
they didn’t show up the next night, Roberto prepared a booklet that contains
all the Xerox copy of the Chess Mate and Music and Me articles that the family
has been featured including the original copy of a Tia Belau Newspaper that
featured them with new Executive Chef Daisuke Kunii entitled “Effective Oct.
15, 2015, Palau Retirement Age is Now 62”.
The
Uehara family will be leaving that night so Roberto just inform the Front Desk
that the booklet is for them and Roberto included his latest business card
there.
Roberto
received a verbal apology from Uehara family through Chef Kunii about their
inability to show up and dine at Waves Restaurant. They are busy in packing
their belongings.
One
and a half years later, they’re back again in July 04, 2016. Roberto is already
at the Breeze Bar when Mrs. Satoku Uehara called Jovy Rodriguez at Waves
Restaurant asking for Roberto. Jovy said Roberto is already at Breeze Bar and
it’s already 9:45pm. Roberto played piano at Waves from 7-9pm and keyboard at
Breeze Bar from 9-11pm.
Mrs.
Uehara said that it’s raining and to just please inform Roberto that we’re here
now in Palau and we will see him again on Tuesday evening at dinner time, which
they did. They had ala carte dinner as they didn’t like the buffet that night.
Roberto
played to them their favorite songs –Beatles, Carpenters, Disney songs and
Sheena Easton’s songs. When Roberto played Sheena Easton’s song “For Your Eyes
Only”, Mr. Uehara come to him and said, “Thank you for playing our favorite
songs. The last one you played is from 007 James Bond movie of the same title.”
Roberto said, yes it is. Mr. Uehara gave Roberto $20.00 30 minutes earlier.

Roberto wrapped those with a Palau Royal Resort and Cruise Control colored pages of a Japanese diving magazine.
Roberto also mentioned to them that he will be representing Palau again in 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan from Sept. 01-14 but will stay in Philippines for 6 days and will be back in Palau on Sept. 16, 2016. Mr. Uehara said that they will be back to Palau in Oct. 2016.

The Uehara family came to Palau
Royal Resort again on March 29, 2014. They have this photo with new Executive
Chef Daisuke Kunii. Roberto asked them to come back to Palau again in July,
before leaving for Norway for the 2014 World Chess Olympiad. The Uehara family
comes to Palau at least 4 times a year. They missed the New Year’s Eve
