        4 PLAYERS STILL UNDEFEATED;
             ROUND 5, 6 ON AUG. 2

Top seed NM Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., CM Bernardo Garcia, 3rd seed Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. and 5th seed Jeffrey Balbalosa kept their untarnished slate in the resumption of 3rd and 4th round of the 2015 Palau Rapid Chess Championship held at Bethlehem Park on Sunday, July 26 from 2-5pm.
                At Board 1, Montel, Jr. overcame a 2-pawn deficit to outwit NM/FI Roberto Hernandez in 54 moves of Reti Opening (New York and Capablanca System).
It's a first time in 13 years that Roberto opened with 1. Nf3, against Cyril. It took Cyril 2 minutes to reply with 1. ...d5 and after 8 moves, Roberto is ahead by a pawn after the exchange of queens.
Hernandez won another pawn on the 17th move but overlooked the best defense on his 26th move-- Rf2, which was suggested by Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr., after the game.
Instead, Roberto moved 26. g4 and lost the exchange (a knight for a rook). It's still a drawn game potentially but Roberto handled the endgame poorly to lose with still 4 minutes and 40 seconds left in his clock to Cyril's 5:13.
At Board 2, Balbalosa can’t convert his one pawn advantage to a win and settled for a draw with Pax while at Board 3, I.N.C. chess tourney champion Allan Alcid dealt Arnolfo Inres his first loss.
After 2 straight draws in round 1 and 2, CM Garcia finally extracted a whole point over Manuel Mahor, Jr. at Board 4 while Nilo de Jesus clobbered Sofronio ‘Pons’ Mahor for his 2nd point.
At Board 6, John Mark Tamayo showed great potential in defeating Eugene Labarda while Edmond Barayuga, the only absent player in the field, lost by default to Escapatoria, Jr. at Board 7 and at Board 8, 4th seed Dennis Gonzales finally scored a victory over Glen Navarroza.
And at Board 9, Chris Kitalong played his first game against Josef Karlo Moyet. Kitalong agreed to start the tourney with a 0-2 win-loss start to be the 18th participant. He lost due to rustiness for not playing competitive chess in 6 months.
In the 4th round, Jeff is still undefeated when he drew his match with Cyril. Roberto easily subdued Alcid in 28 moves of Sicilian Defence (Lowenthal and Kalashnikov Variations). Pax stayed undefeated by trouncing Escapatoria, Jr. and Garcia became the 4th unbeaten player by drubbing De Jesus.
Inres kept pacing with the leaders with a victory over Labarda; Tamayo by default over Barayuga; Gonzales touted Mahor, Jr.; Pons Mahor dealt Moyet his 3rd loss and Navarroza finally scored a win over Kitalong.
5th round pairings: 1. Garcia vs. Montel, Jr. 2. Balbalosa vs. Hernandez 3. Alcid vs. Suringa, Jr. 4. Tamayo vs. Navarroza 5. Mahor, Jr. vs. Inres 6. Moyet vs. Gonzales 7. De Jesus vs. Barayuga 8. Labarda vs. Mahor and Kitalong vs. Escapatoria, Jr.
