PALAU first National Master Manny Nedic and 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. have lost only 2 games so far. They have the best slate in the ongoing rapid chess tournament.
On Saturday evening, Montel, Jr. scored 2 whole points over newcomer Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II while Nedic escape with a draw when Mestizo also missed a mate in one like last week against 4th seed Roberto Hernandez at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1.
Nedic won the 2nd round match with Mestizo to earned a 10-2-3 win-loss-draw record.
He was the co-champion of 2006 Palau National Chess Championship with Menandro Manuel to earn their National Master title.
Earlier on the day, Montel, Jr. (8-2-2) clobbered Hernandez (11-5-1) in their Caro-Kahn Defence encounter where the endgame wizardry of Cyril extracted a whole point and boosted his chances to earn his first ever chess title in Palau after being runner-up in many occasions.
Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich (10-14-2) outlasted Jaime Guevarra (3-7-1) in their 2nd round match and they practiced blitz chess after their game as no more available players were around.
Hernandez also played 4 blitz chess games with venue host Gene Pastrana (9-11-2) winning all of them.
Jose Omega (9-6-3) also played blitz chess with Pastrana, who lost also to Montel, Jr. in the last game of the day.
With blitz specialist and current leader Tony Villa (14-3-3) to come back from vacation on January 14, the tournament will be in full swing with Palau Royal Resort's players to play against each other at Dormitory 1 on their available time.
