ZACH'S FIRST CHESS LESSON
Roberto Hernandez teaches his grandson Zach his first chess lesson during his 22-day vacation in Philippines (June 21-July 12, 2013). The result is discouraging. What can you expect from a 2-year-old boy? Serious teaching starts at age 5 and up. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

The
2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway is still exactly a year from now
(Aug. 01-14) but Palau’s Delegate to 3 consecutive Olympiads Mr. Jan Berglund
has already preparing the members of the team with his suggestion of acquiring
a Swedish Grandmaster (GM) to train the Palau Team Members. The following is
his email at Linkedin:
Dear Mr. Hernandez,
I am still not through checking all my old Hotmail e-mails, but I
thought of contacting you now anyway, when you have come back from your
holidays and had some time to catch up after your trip to Manila.
I must congratulate you to all the interest in the next Palauan
Championship! I suppose that the participation in Chess Olympics has
contributed to this interest as well as your enormous job for chess.
In case you'll get last minute withdrawals,
which leaves you with odd number of players in ANY of the groups, I am
willing to try to substitute over the internet, as we discussed last year
before my accident.
I am now preliminary booked on a flight
to Manila in November this year, in case I can find an affordable connection
from there to Palau. But, I am still watching out for flights through other
connection cities.
I have not made any reservation earlier than that because of two
reasons; I do not know how long I need to go to the medical gymnastics and
I plan to go to the FIDE Congress September 30th-October 10th, 2013, as it is
next door. Tallinn, Estonia, is Sweden's closest foreign capital and we
have inexpensive ferry connections and low price air fares that link us
together.
I can represent Palau in this FIDE Congress
2013. But, in that case, I would like you to send a letter to FIDE, and a
copy to me, that I am the permanent delegate to Palau from now on until further
notice. Otherwise, there might be a lot of political problems, as you
know. Then, I can continue to be Palau's delegate also in Tromso 2014, if you
so wish.
I have been discussing a training set up for the Tromso
Olympiad. I want to hear from you, if you think there is any interest among
the Palau top players for this? Preferably, all the players on the Olympic
team should take part, but others are also welcome. The trainer I have in
mind is Harry Schussler of Sweden. He does not have any trainer's title from
FIDE, but I know that he is a better coach/trainer than player, if that is
possible! He is an IGM (International Grandmaster). I know, because in those
days, when I was working full time for the Swedish Chess Federation, he took
part as a student in our training camps for juniors. When
he was no longer a junior player, he was asked by our staff to teach
the new generations of juniors.
Harry's proposal (This can of course be
modified, if you so wish.) of training program is based on his own teaching
material:
1) One trip to Palau for
a 3-5 days training camp.
2) Distance training. He thinks, he can accomplish pretty much in a short time that way. Maybe we’ll do training over the internet 45 minutes per week for some months.
3) Training camp in Europe, in case one or more of the players have the opportunity to come here to play in one or more tournaments. Maybe, someone is planning to study in Europe? Then (s)he/they can chose Uppsala university and take part in Harry's regular training program, as he is residing in Uppsala. Harry personally seconds each of his students privately in one week-end tournament per semester and sees to that they get to play many local and regional tournaments during each semester.

4) Harry can join to Tromso as a
trainer/coach/team captain for the men's team, if you so wish, for the full
tournament or part of the tournament.
Best wishes Jan
